Shoei Glamster helmet review

In this review, Chris talks through the new-for-2020 Shoei Glamster helmet. Now, the Glamster (please excuse the name) is Shoeis take on a retro-looking, totally up-to-date helmet that looks just right on the kind of modern-retro motorcycles available on the market today. We're talking about bikes like the BMW R nineT, the Moto Guzzi V7, the Kawasaki Z900RS et al. The fact is that a helmet with big aerofoils and lairy race graphics just doesn't look right on the aforementioned bikes. There are many other retro-styled helmets on the market, but none have really been any good. We've been nagging the big helmet manufacturers for some time to bring a helmet to market with modern features such as Pinlock anti-fog visors, proper venting, changeable cheek-pads and head-liners for a great fit, good sound deadening and so on. In early 2019, Arai announced its Rapide-Neo helmet. We've been testing it for some time, and it seems to tick all the boxes. Well, the Glamster is Shoeis attempt, and Chris breaks it down in this video review.

The name comes from the Japanese biker retro bike culture, Japanese marketing doesnt really translate into things for the rest of the world. The Glamster feels like a good late 80's and early 90's helmet vs the agv and the bell and gringo. This is going to be great for me as a costumer for theatre.

After seeing your great video I bought two of these helmets. They are very light and comfortable. I fitted the Sena 10u GT-Air intercoms into the helmets, so I communicate with my partner. The sound quality and functionality is amazing. The only slight issue with the Glamster is when you stop is can mist up, but is doesn’t effect the whole viewing area and disappears as soon as you move or raise the visor. However, if you fit the supplied pin lock then you won’t have a problem. We wouldn’t have know about this helmet if it were not for your video. Keep them coming👍

Have you fitted the pinlock? Sometimes I experience a little mist in the area below the pinlock, which doesn‘t really disturb as it is not in the viewing area as you describe. It helps however to just unlock the visor on longer stops (not opening, just unlocking), it will still be watertight but a lot of air comes in. It is also quite nice to catch some fresh air when being stationary for a minute or more.

Great review, thanks. I bought the Shoei Glamster (from you) after this review about a year ago, so did my wife. We use it actually as daily helmets, also for trips through Europe and it works great (with ear plugs for me, that is). The weight especially is great for those rides. But I agree on one more point: What were they thinking with this name? Whenever someone asks me about my helmet, I say: „It‘s a Shoei, their retro helmet.“ I never say the name, it‘s too humiliating, really. I mean, how could someone approve this name? 😏😄

Does the visor seal up the front completely when closed? Other helmet have spring systems or such to "squeeze them in". And why didn't they add the rear vent system of the RF1200/NXR? The countour is exactly the same in the back. I own a rf1200 at the moment and don't see me buy one of these over it.

Hi Rick, Yes the visor has a good waterproof seal all the way round. As for the design of the helmet we weren’t involved with the design process, so not sure why they have excluded the exhaust vents. This is more for the purist, someone who really wants the retro look to go with their retro/custom bike. Hope that helps, Motolegends Team.

I have two bell bullet helmets, I find them very uncomfortable, they squeeze my forehead. They are very noisy so ear plugs a must. The visor let's in water and wind, it's a shite helmet but absolutly beautiful to look at. I have always worn shoei and find the XL fits perfect the bell 2xl too tight. I trust shoe and like thier helmets so will be buying one this year.

I had this 'sample' in N Ireland a few weeks back. Also, Arai and Shoei have done plenty of lids like this over the years, the SV and TXR for example in the early 2000's. I remember seeing the schematics for this design back in late 2016. Had to sign a disclaimer at the time too...

Not correct, I’m afraid. When we first presented the idea to the Shoei design team back in 2016, a retro helmet was not on their horizon. This we know, and the importer, who attended that meeting, can confirm this. In the months and years since our presentation, the importer has canvassed the views of many retailers, as you would expect, in order to assess whether the idea had legs. Clearly, they and Shoei felt it did, although the decision hasn’t yet been taken as to whether it will work outside Europe.

Hello Shern, The Glamster does not have the deep speaker recesses, in the same way as a Neotec 2/GT Air 2 but there is a noticeable dip in the EPS around the ears designed to make room for most modern slim line speakers. If you are familiar with the Shoei JO and Ex-Zero it is similar to these. Hope that helps. ML
