The problem with helmets is you don’t know how noisy it is until after it has been bought. It it not just the fit that affects the noise of a helmet. I bought an arai axcess last spring. Tried on just about every helmet in the store in different sizes, it is the best fit I’ve ever had, and I think it’s close to being the noisiest I’ve ever had & I reckon it’s down to the air scoops on the top of the helmet.

I think this is a useful video for people who've been riding for a good while - I've only really worn full face or flip helmets, so it's good to hear about the pros/cons of open face and adventure style helmets.

As always, a fabulous video, informative, entertaining even…. (Love your quips)…. Keep up the good work, I’m slowly working through your back catalogue.

Motolegends, any idea why helmet manufacturers produce a particular model for many different head sizes (XS to XL), but not for different head shapes (oval, round, etc)?

Awesome information and an interesting watch, though not a new rider, an enthusiast always looking to learn more. Those helmets you termed “open face with full visor”, we call those “jet” helmets, dunno if that’s a regional thing, I have heard some refer to all open face helmets as jet helmets. I think that’s also where the p and j homologations come from on the flip helmets.

Just saw this - fabulous and thoughtful review. After your explanation, still not sure why you would ditch your Marrakesh for the Baja S4. You say the Baja is more robust, but the Marrakesh Is 1000D Cordura throughout like you said, and AA rated, same as the Baja, so I don't see in what respects the Baja has the advantage. The Baja has more pockets, which are convenient for worldwide travel, which could be a good reason.

Is there any “homework” i can do to guide me to a brand ? Thinking of Schubert C5 and Shoei Neotec 2. Is any of them best for oval/round head ?

A very good friend of mine was a certified BMW Mechanic/Technician. He always said, you can always tell a BMW RIDER, you just Cannot tell him MUCH! LOL Very informative video, thank you.

Yes we do but not helmets I’m afraid for legal / liability reasons.

so what's the safest helmet?

As was said, fit is really important, not only for safety but also for vanity. I bought a Shoei flip front a few years ago and after a while I found it was rubbing at the top of my forehead which meant I was starting lose hair. Aarrgghh! But perhaps more importantly it was irritating which was also distracting. I replaced it with a BMW (Schuberth?) which was a better fit and noticeably quieter.

My ROOF Desmo is not the best helmet, but PERFECT when riding IBA

i want a modular helmet w/ Bluetooth......so do i have to buy a Bluetooth helmet...? or can Bluetooth be added to any helmet..?

I love your reference, "It's All Gone Peter Tong." I'm in Southern California and did not know what that was so had to look it up. That is AWESOME!!! That's a really funny reference. I'm so going to use that over here It's like saying, "it's tighter than Dick's hatband" when something is too tight, or somebody is just too uptight. It's properly obscure and has a funny ring to it. Thank you for the great information and entertainment all in one 😀

I had an accident yesterday... Someone pulled out on me. The chin bar saved my face. I love the idea of an open face but after my experience yesterday I would never wear one! Hope this comment saves someone's face 😊

Condensed version for those of us "blessed" with a 5xl head. 1. can you get the helmet on without forcing your brains to drip out you nose? If "Yes" then congrats on your new helmet. If "NO", tough you will get use to the pain eventually...

Much sense spoken here but why pick on Hipsters and Harley riders at circa 13.40 ? Many cruiser riders, be they riding HD or any other of the excellent cruisers on the market don't want to diminish their riding pleasure by encasing their head in any sort of full enclosure helmet. Speaking for myself, wearing an open face helmet has nothing whatsoever to do with vanity, it's all about my riding pleasure and I fully understand and accept the risk I take by doing so. If it's all about top level safety then sell the bike and go by a multi airbagged SUV.

You have misunderstood. I was not alluding to open-face helmets at this point. I was alluding to the fact that some Harley riders and hipsters are obsessed by the search for low-profile helmets. And by and large it is these riders who tend to do so. This has nothing to do with riding pleasure. But yes I do think this pursuit of an ever lower profile is a little ridiculous. It is pure vanity; and importantly this comes at the expense of safety and comfort. You might want to watch the video again! CP.

This probably means that it has not been properly fitted. Did anybody put in different cheekpads or liners? It’s not the quietest helmet, but it’s certainly not the noisiest. If you have a round head, however, it will not be the best choice for you, and it will be noisy. CP

@@Motolegends yes it was fitted by the Shoei approved shop, it is noisier with earplugs than my old Shark without. The air comes up from under the ears, tried additional padding to no effect. A very expensive helmet including the integrated comm system.

jeg569 Don’t quite know what a Shoei approved shop is. Many Shoei sellers have no idea how to fit a helmet. Did you get offered different liners and did they fit them to show you the difference? The Shoei GT Air is in a different league to any Shark. But the Shark has a round fit and the Shoei a very oval fit. If the Shark is quieter than the Shoei, it tells me that you have probably bought the wrong helmet for your head shape. Which dealer did you buy the helmet from, and can you visit us so that we can check the fit? CP.

@@Motolegends I live in Scotland, the dealer is in Edinburgh, yes they changed cheek pads, I dont want to publicly name them. My gf and I bought a pair and within 5 minutes of getting them home and trying them out, it was worse than having the visors open. After I complained I noticed they removed the fitting service from their website and now dont even mention helmets on their website. Its a 100 mile roundtrip to drop the helmets off and come home, which we have done once, Shoei couldnt find anything wrong. They suggest dropping the helmets off again.

jeg569 Okay, I’m still a bit confused. You bought these helmets from a shop that no longer sells helmets? I don’t understand. You say that the helmets have been back to Feridax, and that they haven’t found a problem, so I still think it’s about fit. What also makes me think there’s no problem with the helmets is that they are both noisy. The chances of buying two faulty helmets together are almost non existent. I would admit that the Neotec is quieter than the GT Air 2, but the GT Air is certainly not noisy. We alone have sold many hundreds, and we have received no complaints of this nature. So, given you are in Scotland, there’s not a lot I can do. If ever you are down this way we would fit them with the correct cheekpads or tell you that you had bought either the wrong size or the wrong helmet for your head shape. To me it sounds as though you had poor advice from people who didn’t know what they are on about. Out of interest, unclip the headliner and a cheekpad in both helmets, and tell me the numbers and letters that appear on the little, white stickers. CP

Laughed when you said that people pick open face helmets because they look nice. I'm sure some people do think that but to me, they are disgustingly ugly! Less safe and less nice to look at? Pass.
