Shoebill Storks Fighting

While we were at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, we encountered a couple of Shoebill storks having an argument. The window betwixt them prevented any damage. It looks like after a the fight, the one on the right concedes with a bow and a shake of its head, while the one on the left simply leers (lowering his enemy's defense).

For people who worry that shoebills in animal preserves are lonely: they do not like the company of other shoebills, and when two baby shoebills are born in one clutch they will fight to the death. They prefer solitary lives! They tend to establish their own territories and even mated pairs prefer to forage apart from one another. The interesting part is that they do not seem to mind humans... While fiercely defending their nests from many animals, there have been many accounts of humans getting close to nests with no issues. They seem to be interested by humans and see them as no threat. Very interesting creature

@McFlickers I suppose when it comes down to it, humans ARE pretty interesting. It's no wonder a lot of animals are curious about us. We do look pretty unique, and the way we act and even walk and our noises are all special

Also, humans being able to easily and casually copy their "respectful" gesture (the bowing) is a factor of that as well.

I like to imagine meeting a shoebill in the wild, or at a preserve, and them being so pleased with my bowing/greeting that they are all “ah, yes. You are interesting and clearly know what you are doing. Here”, and then just yeeting one of their young at me and expecting me to take it.

for anyone who doesn’t know the bowing is a sign of respect and neutrality. they do it to people too. it’s essentially a form of a peace treaty to them, it says “i respect you and won’t hurt you if you promise to do the same”.

You can literally watch the effects of it. How do you think antibiotic resistance is a thing? If organic life can't evolve and adapt how do diseases such as HIV show up out of nowhere and adapt to Infect Humans. Now the origin of life theory and stuff like that can be debated but evolution and adaptation itself is a very crucial part of organic life.

The population is estimated at between 5,000 and 8,000 individuals, the majority of which live in swamps in Sudan, Uganda, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zambia.[11] There is also a viable population in the Malagarasi wetlands in Tanzania.[12] BirdLife International has classified it as Vulnerable with the main threats being habitat destruction, disturbance and hunting.
