My husband & I sold our big house & drastically downsized. So we've become minimalists & don't buy nearly as much stuff as we used to. My weakness has been kitchen gadgets but now that I have a very small kitchen, I just have the items that I really use & enjoy.

Way truth life, Some books are gonna be pretty difficult to get if censorship goes where I think it is going. Some of my favorite books are no longer at the library, either! They have to keep clearing things out to make room for the new things! So I do still buy books sometimes.

We’re downsizing. The house we’re moving into is half the size. There is no way the clothing we currently have (four seasons worth) will fit in the closets. We don’t own a dresser as our house has a massive walk in closet with all the bells and whistles. I’m not a fan of bedroom furniture so won’t be purchasing a dresser for the new house either. My ‘plan’ is to only move what will comfortably fit. Wish me luck on that one. Everything left behind will be donated. I’m so ticked at myself for ever letting it get to this point. The amount of money I’ve spent on clothing, shoes, boots, books, kitchen gadgets, makeup and toiletries is disturbing. Still trying to figure out why I have six pairs of jeans when I only wear two of them!!! I haven’t bought anything since mid November and I still have plenty of gift with purchase items to use up. Not my favourite products by any stretch of the imagination but I’m determined to use them up. I keep telling myself with a home half the size, half needs to go! It’s just math. And I seriously need to purge most of the home decor items. Way TOO much!

"No wire hangers!" She was right, and so are you, though. They're terrible. And I can't remember the last time I bought a magazine, even the ones by checkouts at the supermarket. For me, even the fast-fashion places are too expensive as I go to thrift stores first for practically any clothing I need. Thank you for a helpful video, and I will definitely look into Rakuten.

I'm a senior recently I've been looking back at all the things I've spent money on and I think. why? If I had to do it all over again. I wouldn't buy all the same things you mentioned. I should have taken a picture of it. I no longer buy holiday items. After the holiday, there is no place to put them. Its a waste. What's important is to have money for emergencies, for vacations for the LASTING memories and for the most important necessities.

It's a good idea when you're on a weight loss journey to just get your clothing from a thrift store that way you're not spending a lot of money and then you're down a size in a couple of months and cant wear them. And if you shop in a high-end area you will get some good quality name brand thrift clothes at a fraction of the price. 🙂🙂🙂

We downsized from a huge house to a 1700 sq ft condo. It is a cleansing experience. As for cards between my husband and I,we recycle the past ones we gave each other. My great aunt did this with her husband and I loved the idea. You write a new sentiment and reread one from a past year. Now without a house our time is free for other things. Last year we took a total of 9 trips some large some just 5 days away. We enjoy every minute of our retirement 🥰

I don't buy any of these either. Also no liquid laundry detergent or "pods" (I use laundry soap sheets), no fabric softener, no disposable shavers ( I recycle my man's used razor blades and use them for at least another year), no scented candles, no "smart" appliances, no "special" cleaners (make my own) and no more cat litter. (I have 4 cats) I use biodegradable, super cheap wood pellets from the hardware store instead. Works fantastic. No odor either. Oh- and no ziplog bags. I got a sealer from Value Village and use bread bags to seal in Lunch etc.

jbddesign - thanks for the tip about the wood chips I'll pass it along to my daughter. I'm very on board with your choices as well, extending the life of razors, no smart Alec technology when I can help it, no Alexa, no camera doorbell, no Wi-Fi extenders, etc. Friends rave about laundry soap sheets. I still have plenty of soap Left over from bulk purchase of a high-quality nontoxic laundry source, and have used a pure wash machine that doesn't require any soap unless I'm in the mood to add some. Psychologically sometimes it feels good to put soap in. The pure wash is just for cold water, which is how I wash most of my things. Soap, antimicrobial essential oil, etc., goes along with Things that need disinfecting at any temperature. no fancy cleaners, old-school original Bon Ami, acidic water, Castile soap. I don't have facial care products beyond witch hazel, plant hydrosols, goats milk soap, the occasional natural scrub, natural tooth powder. Not quite shampoo - free yet. My daughter and I made tea lights from old wax candles and essential oils which was fun.

While you’re transitioning in your weight, please consider resale clothing. When clothes become too big and no longer wearable, donate those items and purchase replacements in your current size (try to stick to donating the same number of items you purchase). Knowing you will lose more weight and the items you wear are temporary, you don’t want to “invest” in items for the short term. I also love Chico’s and Talbot’s and have found brand new, with tags pieces that I loved wearing while on my weight loss journey. It’s recycling at its best, the bonus is having more $ to spend on your new wardrobe when you reach your goal weight.

I also buy postcards and discovered they are the exact size of a recipe card. There's usually enough room on the back for a recipe and now when I pull out a recipe, I'm reminded of a lovely place I've been. I was in Scotland last summer and wandered into a specialty liquor store (even though I only have one or two alcoholic drinks per year). I'm sure the friendly proprietor could see I was NOT going to buy any alcohol so she gave me a postcard of the lovely seaside scene outside the shop🙂.I've written the recipe for the cullen skink (fish chowder) I enjoyed at the restaurant next door on this postcard.

I don't do magazine subscriptions, and I make good use of libraries - even when I'm travelling. I do buy books that I regard as resources that I'll be referring to often. (I also like to underline and/or highlight, something not appropriate for borrowed books.) I avoid crafty "dust-collectors" and I stopped wearing makeup a few years ago. I've owned 3 stationary bikes, one X-C ski machine, and a rowing machine over the years - dumb, dumb, dumb - and briefly an expensive fitness club membership that I didn't use. I'm happiest outdoors. I'm a fulltime RVer after living in a sticks & bricks and downsized a lot. I do have a storage unit with remaining personal effects, but the household furniture and most accoutrements are gone. My weakness has been battery-operated tools for my impromptu workshopping "needs"... First time watching your channel... Enjoying it!

But, books and music must be bought (ecopies are fine): this is the only way we ensure more books/music by new writers etc. I love my books and music. Culture is very important, and the "producers of culture/creatives" need to be able to live, so they need our money. I agree about most everything else you mentioned.

Glenda, I have been doing glass containers for a long time and love it. The thing I don't love is how difficult it is to replace the tops! Or the bottoms, occasionally things break. My brother-in-law sent us home with some food in the snap lid glass storage items and one of the sides was just breaking right off. Not very good longevity. I don't know if it's because he puts his in the dishwasher or is careless or what. I used to love the silicone top ones that I got at the Container Store but now I have to be super careful that none of them get lost at the back of the fridge. One of them got lost in the back of the fridge, grew this nasty mold that won't come off! And here I was thinking that these silicon lids were the be-all end-all answer to the old plastic lids that cracked overtime! I definitely pay a lot of attention to caring for the lids now. I have both the silicone and the Snapon lids on the glass. I even have a few of the old style plastic lid glassware and the kind that has a glass top as well as a glass bottom.

Thanks Cathy. I quit buying magazines a good while back also. I quit my subscription boxes because I loved the sales to much. I gave a lot of the items away as gifts but I love so called good sales. You have taught me to think more about quality than quantity. My daughter n I were talking about this subject earlier today. I grew up so poor and never had money to have good skin care or quality anything. I tried to teach my girls don’t buy throw away furniture but save up to buy quality pieces, one at a time if you have to. I taught them the same with clothes. Unfortunately I’ve never gotten into buying expensive clothes.

Besides must-haves coffee maker and toaster, my immersion blender is really the only other appliance I keep because I use it fairly often. I don’t have or use other things, mainly because I have limited storage in my 650-sq ft home, which I love. It’s so liberating to have fewer things to maintain.

Getting ready for a garage sale, I have 2 and 3 of the same exact thing, this happened because I had so much stuff could never find the item. Donated books and stopped buying, I now use my library card, made a cookbook on my computer, and keep copies from the internet. I let my kids go thru extra stuff and take what they wanted. If I see something I think I want, google it, that process will make you realize you dont need it. Clothes havent bought anything in over a year.

I have a very similar list to yours. I do buy books that I think are not going to be available in the future. And I keep the favorites that I go back to again and again. The library is king. For magazines as well. Long ago I forwarded my scrapbooking supplies when I thought I would play crafting to be social with The neighborhood moms, but I never really cared for it. Ditching all of the pagan holidays that I used to think we're Christian has saved a lot in my budget, cleared a lot of square footage, and I was able to save others money by passing it on to people who continue to celebrate those things. It has simplified so much to just say no to all of that! I stopped getting souvenirs a long time ago with a few exceptions. I really don't wear jewelry, but I have bought pendants in four different places that we visited because I actually feel like those stone pendants are harmonious on me. I don't feel any compulsion to continue doing that though. My make up is super simple, I have been using the Christina compact for over a decade I believe and one compact keeps me going for months and months. Pressed mineral make up. Four coordinating colors in each compact - blend as you like, they have some thing for foundation, rouge, eyeshadow, eyeliner, all neutral. And one easy to carry compact. Slightly different variations so they have something for every depth skin tone. Add some mascara, tinted lip gloss, and eyeshadow with an angled brush for eyeliner, that's it. are use the oil cleansing method for my face instead of fancy cleaners, some witch hazel and rose hydrosol for fun. Skin breakouts are a thing of the past since I started using the Christina compact. They occasional scrub with salt or sugar or oatmeal etc. Nothing fancy. i've gotten rid of some exercise equipment also! Still dealing with my photos. I don't take a lot of photos but it's really annoying when I lose access to the ones on my external drive instead of having them in my hand. Birthday cards went the way of other pagan holidays and I would much rather spend time with people regularly then save it up for a birthday. I agree with the white China plan to the nth degree! A little attention to the color of white and your table always looks coordinated. My husband considers the coffee maker and toaster oven essential, so I think if we ever moved into a mini house on wheels he would be fine with that. Fast fashion is so gross now! It looks like plastic, it feels like plastic… Because it IS plastic for all intents and purposes! I'm keeping my workhorse sewing machine, one of the best ones singer ever built back in the late 1950s to 1960. I'm going back to making some of my own clothing like I did when I was young. I love shopping for natural fiber fabrics, especially organic. I scored some organic linen and some great colors for this summer and it won't be a moment too soon for my overworked wardrobe! I also have an eye on converting some of my Gently worn clothing into cute outfits for a little girl whose coloring is absolutely perfect for it… Those purchases weren't so great for me because I disregarded my coloring when I purchased them.

Like your t - shirt you have on right now. 😊 I had just donated clothes to Big brothers donations and Diabetes Canada. And some to Family services. My hubby and our 2 sons came up with 8 bags. And 2 boxes of electronic appliances and pots and pans dinnerware. It really cleared out alot of things we didn't need or use anymore Thanks Cathy for your awesome video and about the snacks. Peace ✌️❤

As someone that was in the printing business (almost non-existent now) the trees that were used to make the paper were one of Canada's main industries, so it's sad to see the loss of these. The appliances in my kitchen are 30+ years old, work perfectly, are in amazing condition (because I clean them!!) and I am an avid cook/baker. I haven't felt the need for whatever is the newest iteration of these items. I try to buy from clothing stores where I can try items on, as returning them is just adding to the landfills (as most retailers and on line companies throw them out when returned). Massive problem. I am sad to see the greeting card habit going away. Most of my family is overseas, and I love receiving cards. I think that they still send them in the UK. "Good" china used to be such a thing in the US and Canada (not so much in the UK - which surprised everyone when I moved here and didm't have any!) and for the first 10 or 15 years of my marriage we used it always when we entertained - and the table looked wonderful! I'm holding on to it - worth a lot of money (and maybe my grandkids will appreciate it!).

I moved from a huge city to a small, rural town. One of the disadvantages is that, if I need or want a certain type of food, it’s a minimum of a 40 mile round trip. As a result, I do buy specialty kitchen appliances and equipment. I buy inexpensive cosmetics, and I don’t do anything that requires a lot of dressy clothes. Basically, t-shirts and jeans are adequate for my needs. My biggest expenditures are quality foods and plants for the yard.

What a great, relatable video!! I've always been kind of a minimalist. Before purchasing anything, I think long and hard and ask myself if I really need it. Often I want things but don't need them and I end up doing massive purges when I don't wear what I bought, and thinking what a waste of money! I definitely don't buy fast fashion any longer. I buy the very best I can afford and only if I have a wardrobe gap. Clothes have to mix and match. I have a thing for dishes and no longer fall prey to new dish sets! I could relate to SO many of the things you mentioned! Used to be addicted to decorating magazines but no longer. And yes, the prices of magazines are exorbitant!! I'm just really becoming more minimalistic! Your hair looks really pretty!
