D'ailleurs contrairement à "My way" qui est une réécriture complète du texte de comme d'habitude avec un thème comlètement différent, là il s'agit vraiment d'une adaptation reprenant même certains vers dont "l'ombre de ton ombre, l'ombre de ton chien"

This has to be one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. The lyrics, the slow beginning and then the build..it is extraordinary and is perfectly performed by Dame Shirley and utterly heartbreaking.

This was my late wife's favourite song... she asked me to whisper the words of the song at the very last seconds of her breath...No song could have possibly said it all..

Shirley had the magic...she and Dusty Springfield, Pet Clark and Sandy Shaw. The mid sixties were amazing and no one not there as a youth would NEVER understand how great those times were. I cry for those who never experienced those days and magical nights.

Yes, I've known Brel wrote the French song from the beginning and I believe he wrote both the music and the lyrics back in 1959. McKuen wrote the English lyrics to the tune and both became standards of sorts! That is why I thanked him for his RENDITION. Songwriting is often a shared experience and not only the work of one artist.

You can only be envied! How fortunate. I saw her live in Düsseldorf in February 1974, I still have the program, the tickets and the huge poster .... and all records and CDs. I have loved her since I heard her voice in "Goldfinger" - I am now 74, got an autograph (!!) from her two years ago and listen to her every day. It just feels good. I think the the songs have a similar sentiment but I find the original French version so pessimistic and wallowing in so much sadness. Maybe it's just too sad for me. I feel the English version isn't so much a translation of the French, but a rewritten song with a different feeling and a little bit of hope, perhaps more melancholic. But both are truly emotive songs and Shirley Bassey is incredible here.
