One of the previous games had one and I remember it being pretty funny. Like, a monster type is weak but able to take on the appearance of stronger enemies. It retains its behavior and flying properties though, so if you see a monster suddenly cross water when it really shouldn't... it's an impostor! The bestiary mentions that along with the developers always being worried that it's the actual monster just bugging out x)

Thanks for bringing this shiren entry to the west in English.

This definitely has the potential to be the best shiren the wanderer game im very excited to play this in February and I hope that all the new features get added in a new pokemon mystery dungeon.

every game has potential, but this will just be the same. also, there really is no point in the multiplayer aspects for this niche series, it's just gonna die in a month after release. well, at least they added in the save yourself feature

Imo, I like the previous entries' pixel sprite artworks more. I don't know, maybe I'll try this game out just for the sake of playing new Shiren

The mystery dungeon genre has never grabbed me but I'm glad this is still going on. Reminds me of the N64 one.

People saying to check the Pokemon MD games, I'd say check the demos for the Void Terrarium games, some of my favs from the past few years. They are the closest to pushing this genre forward in an interesting way (that I've seen) As someone who likes MD, there is so much more that could be done with this formula that just hasn't been touched on... (which is more kinda sad and reassuring)

And Shiren was basically THE premier Mystery Dungeon property ever since Chunsoft went full self-publisher mode

Is it just my attention span or is it actually impossible to absorb all the information a trailer throws at you when the VO is reading something completely different from the text on screen and also showing gameplay with its own text covering the screen?

@@kidrobot. Hmm. Okay, this is just the first I ever heard of this game. The multi-player and online aspects seem very intriguing. I've only really seen Mario Kart pull this off well...but the trailer makes it seem interesting.

@@kidrobot.Shiren 5’s rescue service is still alive and kicking even years after the release. In one of my rescue requests of 5 from a couple months ago, a Japanese player, bless their soul, went and did a 99f run of a dungeon to rescue me.

@@AeirEclipseHayastin Fun callback then! I beat that game in January, which is juuuuust long enough ago for me to doubt my memory. And I do think that this game’s art has something of that N64 charm, just newer, like a graphical sequel in the way that Tower of Fate could be a tragical sequel to the SNES/DS game.

I've never tried Shiren the Wanderer because it's known to be the tougher variety of Mystery Dungeon games but I might try this entry. Will it have any metaprogression so death doesn't mean starting from zero?

Super stoked for this game, even if the lack of a preorder box set is a little disappointing. I own more box sets of Shiren games than any other franchise, so I was excited for a new one. Still, that sticker is gonna have to go somewhere important…

Well, it could be possible. We got Rescue Team DX for the switch. Chances are, if it does happen this year, we could see a new installment with the more recent gens added or a remake of PMD2, since it’s the only one that isn’t 3D.

Eh yea that's the whole point, it literally is in the title bro. And also Shiren is older than Pokémon mystery dungeon. Pokémon took their idea.

Hard. The first one was for the SNES and lacked a lot of the extra mechanics that some of the others have, tho this new title seems to be going back to those roots a bit. Basically it’s one long run to the end and you always start at level 1, probably with very little gear if any. Die, and you’re sent back to the beginning with nothing in your inventory. Cache equipment at points along the way, but I don’t think there was any insurance in the first game. Some later titles like the N64 game had Tags you could attach to equipment to reclaim it for a fee, or lost and found merchants. Regardless, it’s the one of the formative rougelikes, so don’t expect to keep much when you die.

Super Pokemon mystery dungeon went this 3D style on the 3DS, I didn't think I would like it but as it turned out it was fine. You get used to it very quickly as the game plays the same.

It's less about player levels and more about building skills separate from your levels. Shiren games often have an enemy type that can steal levels from you, and lategame floors eventually become a matter of running to the stairs before the high level dragons or tanks incinerate you. A Shiren 2 speedrunner was able to clear the Shiren equivalent of Purity Forest in about 51 minutes, and they were at a measly level 29.

That's what I was thinking. Looks like the same exact engine as Rescue Team DX. If you look at the details at the end you can see it was developed by "Spike Chunsoft" and I know Chunsoft was the developer for the PMD series, so it probably is the exact same engine. So I looked it up and apparently Pokemon Mystery Dungeon was a crossover, like Pokemon Conquest, where they put a Pokemon skin over another style of game. Chunsoft has been making Mystery Dungeon games before Pokemon. The more you know!

It's already been proven that this is a good game by Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Izuna. The problem is unlike those games, this ones character is no fun. Who wants to play as a guy with a big hat? At least in Izuna you have access to some really fun girls. I'm sure this game has you play as more than 1 character too, yet the ad shows none of that. Even though is the most important thing to show. The game is graphically better than Izuna, but will probably not be as good just because the main character blows.

You’re missing the real star of the games that wanders right next to him, the embodiment of Spike Chunsoft’s writers, Koppa. That one little ferret has enough sass to go around, he isn’t afraid to talk big against literal gods. His partner Shiren is meant to be a bit of a blank slate, though that’s not to say Shiren hasn’t accomplished anything- at the tender age of 10, he built an entire castle, on top of his many problem solving exploits. Compared to PMD, Shiren is less about the story and more about legitimate roguelike challenge and providing an arcade-esque experience. Shiren doesn’t have fancy moves most of the time; he often has to rely on his wits and his luck to survive, and rather than levels, you gain knowledge on how to contend with the many baddies of the dungeon. As for other playable characters, Shiren usually doesn’t do that. Shiren is usually at the forefront of the journey, with allies joining him to assist his adventure. The only times Shiren isn’t the player character is in the Wii entry, the Dreamcast Spinoff of fellow wanderer Asuka, and the funny Soccer spinoff.

On topic of multiple playable characters, this game appears to bring back Monster Meat, which are food items that morph you into the monster type in question. It's very fun (transform into a ghost and you can bully enemies by attacking from walls)... but rather rare so that probably won't change your mind x)
