I always interperet this as a bait and switch. You think they’re talking about their own ship, when in reality it’s a party and they’re celebrating because they sank the OTHER guy’s ship. 😂

I agree, that's a wonderful interpretation of 'starboard is to the left, larboard is to the right'. That's only true if they're looking at a ship from the front, not when looking at their own ship.

@@mithranigrandaric5872 I interpeted Larboard as Harbor , as in port, as we know it today. Which, would be the case, with the ship capsizing and already upsidedown. Navigate while walking on the ceiling.

Would love to see a music video for this. A crew frantically trying and failing to save their doomed vessel.

Yeah, the first 2 verses is the calm "Oh the ship seems to be sinking" and the rest is the sudden realization of "Oh shit! The ship is sinking!"

I can't tell, is the ship sinking? He didn't say it enough for me to be entirely sure

Love this song. It is always part of our playlist when we are sailing across the Sea of Thieves.

I became aware of this song because it was a closing piece for the documentary "Enron: the smartest guys in the room", which was also the biggest sinking ship in the 2000 market crash. Before they delisted the stock, I bought my only shares in Enron, paid $10 for 100 shares, and took delivery of the certificate, suitable for framing. Boy, was my broker mad for the hassle, but I wanted a piece of that history!

Could also equally be that the quartermaster (as "the captain's marooned", so he's not the singer of the song) is hardly a replacement for the captain of the ship. And the main reason WHY the ship is sinking is because the quartermaster is terrible at his job.

Additionally to that point, that means that everyone else on the ship would have moved up a position from their previous one. Which depending on their training and experience at sea could leave more than a few positions manned by people who have no idea what the fuck they're doing. Which...would explain everything that the quartermaster is singing about. Because everyone in the roles below him have failed at their new duties, leading to disaster.
