Ghoultown "Drink With The Living Dead" [Official]

-----------------------------------------------
I was sittin in The Thirsty Devil
one sheet hung to the wind
when the bat wings doors creaked open
and a stranger sauntered in
he moved his head from side to side
and glared with a sunken eye
I heard the spin of a rusty spur
as he shook off the dreary night
he lowered his hat, checked his gun
and headed toward the bar
walked on up beside me
I knew he'd traveled far
in a voice as thick as mud
he looked to the 'keep and said...
"one shot of whiskey for myself
and one for my new friend"
the patrons whispered hushed and low
they seemed to be afraid
as if a ghost had stood right up
and walked out of its grave
his face was shallow and dirty
his skin like leather hide
sure he spoke like any man
but something wasn't right
so I twisted on my stool
turned to him and said
"thank you sir, but just the same,
I'm chasin worms instead"
he growled and shoved the drink my way
his eyes cold as death
"I pick the drinks, you knock 'em back
else draw against my hand"
chorus:
when it's six to midnight
and the boney hand of death is nigh
you better drink your drink and shut your mouth
if you draw against his hand, you can never win
go ahead... drink with the living dead
"who the hell do you think you are?"
my patience growin thin
but swallow hard, I had to do,
when the story he began
his lips curled back and words came forth
starting up the tale
and every face inside that bar
turned a shade of pale
"my name is Stanton Cree
and I died three years before
I shot a man to steal his drink
at least that's what they hung me for
now I'm cursed to walk the earth
and challenge every night
a man to match me drink for drink
or by the bullet die"
"now wait a minute, mister,
no one makes me a fool"
I pushed the shot of whiskey
back on over towards the ghoul
"I love a drink like any man
but that's a losin game
to drink or draw against the dead
would only be insane"
Stanton Cree tipped his hat
and laughed a wicked laugh
"you see, the lord cursed my soul
for killin that poor man
there ain't no choice so you must try
to match me shot for shot
if you win, then you'll go free
and I can finally rot"
the barhop nodded slowly
and I knew that I was screwed
if I chose to duel the dead
then I would surely lose
so I took the glass
and threw the shot into my throat
I would match him drink for drink
no matter if I choked
whiskey, tequila, vodka, rum or gin
ain't no man that I can't beat
be him live or dead
so into the morning
I matched him ounce for ounce
til Stanton Cree fell over
and a winner was announced
now he rests in his pine box
and I still walk the streets
but I don't forget the night
when death had chosen me
there ain't no fancy moral
to go with this I fear
unless you aim to kill a man
and drink down his last beer!

I just realized that if he died 3 years ago, and has been doing this every night, he has killed over 1000 people before he is beaten by the singer.

I think there is a moral to this story: Never drink with the living dead, else they keel over and stiff you with a huge bar tab.

Okay I came here to say who the hell is gonna try to collect a bar tab from the living dead? But also, Fabian Ruelaz, if you win, you DON'T keep livin'. You suffer the curse and you become dead. Until someone else beats you and puts you out of your misery. Which, if you follow it through to its logical conclusion, means that eventually, someone will acquire the curse that can outdrink any man alive, and be locked in eternal torment until evolution increases our alcohol tolerance. It's even sadder when you consider it on that level, in some ways, taking the metaphors into account and the emotional context.

@@rampage3337 It really sounded to me like winning transferred the curse to him, and losing would have killed him, and that was probably how Stanton Cree got cursed in the first place. Like the minute Stanton picked him, he was doomed either way. He won, but he really lost... Because you can't win when you tangle with death. All you can really pick is how you die, if you're... lucky? But sooner or later, friend, death challenges us all, whatever face he may be wearing, and we will every one of us lose one way or the other, even if we "win." Did you notice how he starts looking more and more undead as the video progresses? It might even be a reference to alcoholism itself... You drink because it's easier than killing yourself, but it ends up killing you anyway. It IS set in a bar, and the challenge is drinking in the face of a grim death, but the more you drink, the deader you get. Symbolism there seems pretty obvious, to me. The best you can hope for using alcohol to fight the urge to die is that you die more slowly, or your life becomes like death anyway. That's a thing I know a lot about from personal experience.

@@leiferickson4841 You may be reading a bit too much into it. But the lyrics clearly say that Stanton Cree was cursed for shooting a man to steal his drink ("the Lord cursed my soul for killing that poor man."). Being beaten in a drinking match broke the curse. Time for a lyrics video, methinks.

A rich oil tycoon from Texas made his way to Ireland one day, where he made his way to a local pub. He walked up to the bar and laid a bag of money on the counter whilst he declared allowed to all in the room. "I heard y'all Irish can drink, so I put it to you that not one of y'all's can drink 500 shots back to back. Prove me wrong, and I'll give you this here five thousand dollars." The room immediately grew silent, not a soul stirred. Then suddenly, a single gentleman stood to his feet, assumed at first to be an accepting challenger but he quickly stormed out the front door. A half hour of time passed and the same man came back walked to the bar turned to the Texan and said, "Alright, I'll take that bet!" The bartender lined up 500 shots and the Irish man tossed them back one after the other until he had finished all 500 shots in record time. The Texan raised his eyebrows in surprise and tipped back his hat as he handed the bag of money to the winning contender. "Well, you won." he said then asked. "Outta' curiosity, where'd you go for that half hour?" To which the Irish man laughed then replied. "Oh that! I went to the bar across the street to see if I could really do it first!"

I'm going to guess that by the reactions of everyone to Stanton in the bar that he was NOT a regular patron there. Must have gone to a lot of saloons before this one. Also, the narrator was already drunk when he challenged him. "One sheet hung to the wind" means that he was tipsy. That's pretty badass to begin with.

  • @comettamer

    @comettamer

Perhaps, though its possible that many of them weren't regulars, because they were freaked out by a ghost. The barkeep however, seems to have continued his job as normal even during the drinking contest. This suggests he either knew Stanton in life, had been party to this challenge before or both.

I know this is an old comment but imma reply anyway. The barkeep seems to consider this pretty normal as he has little to no reaction to this event AND at the very end of the video we get a shot of the outside of the saloon which reveals its name "The thirsty devil" which could be in reference to Stanton himself. I believe that Stanton probably visited that saloon every night which would have caused any regulars to stop coming (in case they were chosen next) so the only people there were just passing by which is why they all seemed so scared (implying they had heard the story but didn't believe it until they seen it)

And maybe his body will have the money appear somewhere on his person so when they bury him, his debts to the living are paid? Who knows, but there are several ways this could go where the curse ensures that the punishment isn't also a financial burden on the living (seeing as how it's a force for justice and all).

I see no one talking about this being a repeating cycle. After the singer beats Creed in the drinking game he's so drunk he no longer cares about killing a man for his drink, thus becoming the new ghoul challenging people to a drinking contest so he can rest, the line "Least that's what they hung me for" insinuating that there was a ghoul before Creed that challenged him too. The song never ends.

I was sittin in The Thirsty Devil, one sheet hung to the wind when the bat wings doors creaked open and a stranger sauntered in he moved his head from side to side and glared with a sunken eye I heard the spin of a rusty spur as he shook off the dreary night he lowered his hat, checked his gun and headed toward the bar walked on up beside me, I knew he’d traveled far in a voice as thick as mud he looked to the ‘keep and said… “one shot of whiskey for myself and one for my new friend” the patrons whispered hushed and low, they seemed to be afraid as if a ghost had stood right up and walked out of its grave his face was shallow and dirty, his skin like leather hide sure he spoke like any man, but something wasn’t right so I twisted on my stool, turned to him and said “thank you sir, but just the same, I’m chasin worms instead” he growled and shoved the drink my way, his eyes cold as death “I pick the drinks, you knock ‘em back, else draw against my hand” chorus: when it’s six to midnight and the boney hand of death is nigh you better drink your drink and shut your mouth if you draw against his hand, you can never win go ahead… drink with the living dead “who the hell do you think you are?” my patience growin thin but swallow hard, I had to do, when the story he began his lips curled back and words came forth starting up the tale and every face inside that bar turned a shade of pale “my name is Stanton Cree and I died three years before I shot a man to steal his drink, at least that’s what they hung me for now I’m cursed to walk the earth and challenge every night a man to match me drink for drink or by the bullet die” “now wait a minute, mister, no one makes me a fool” I pushed the shot of whiskey back on over towards the ghoul “I love a drink like any man but that’s a losin game to drink or draw against the dead would only be insane” Stanton Cree tipped his hat and laughed a wicked laugh “you see, the lord cursed my soul for killin that poor man there ain’t no choice so you must try to match me shot for shot if you win, then you’ll go free and I can finally rot” the barhop nodded slowly and I knew that I was screwed if I chose to duel the dead then I would surely lose so I took the glass and threw the shot into my throat I would match him drink for drink, no matter if I choked whiskey, tequila, vodka, rum or gin ain’t no man that I can’t beat, be him live or dead so into the morning I matched him ounce for ounce til Stanton Cree fell over and a winner was announced now he rests in his pine box and I still walk the streets but I don’t forget the night when death had chosen me there ain’t no fancy moral to go with this I fear unless you aim to kill a man and drink down his last beer!

I love how most comments are about the awesome story the song told, instead of the simpke "this is so cool" or "[insert artist name here] rule" most other songs typically gets. I'll just leave the lyrics here in case someone is browsing from the most recent comments. "I was sittin in The Thirsty Devil, one sheet hung to the wind when the bat wings doors creaked open and a stranger sauntered in he moved his head from side to side and glared with a sunken eye I heard the spin of a rusty spur as he shook off the dreary night he lowered his hat, checked his gun and headed toward the bar walked on up beside me, I knew he’d traveled far in a voice as thick as mud he looked to the ‘keep and said… “one shot of whiskey for myself and one for my new friend” the patrons whispered hushed and low, they seemed to be afraid as if a ghost had stood right up and walked out of its grave his face was shallow and dirty, his skin like leather hide sure he spoke like any man, but something wasn’t right so I twisted on my stool, turned to him and said “thank you sir, but just the same, I’m chasin worms instead” he growled and shoved the drink my way, his eyes cold as death “I pick the drinks, you knock ‘em back, else draw against my hand” chorus: when it’s six to midnight and the boney hand of death is nigh you better drink your drink and shut your mouth if you draw against his hand, you can never win go ahead… drink with the living dead “who the hell do you think you are?” my patience growin thin but swallow hard, I had to do, when the story he began his lips curled back and words came forth starting up the tale and every face inside that bar turned a shade of pale “my name is Stanton Cree and I died three years before I shot a man to steal his drink, at least that’s what they hung me for now I’m cursed to walk the earth and challenge every night a man to match me drink for drink or by the bullet die” “now wait a minute, mister, no one makes me a fool” I pushed the shot of whiskey back on over towards the ghoul “I love a drink like any man but that’s a losin game to drink or draw against the dead would only be insane” Stanton Cree tipped his hat and laughed a wicked laugh “you see, the lord cursed my soul for killin that poor man there ain’t no choice so you must try to match me shot for shot if you win, then you’ll go free and I can finally rot” the barhop nodded slowly and I knew that I was screwed if I chose to duel the dead then I would surely lose so I took the glass and threw the shot into my throat I would match him drink for drink, no matter if I choked whiskey, tequila, vodka, rum or gin ain’t no man that I can’t beat, be him live or dead so into the morning I matched him ounce for ounce til Stanton Cree fell over and a winner was announced now he rests in his pine box and I still walk the streets but I don’t forget the night when death had chosen me there ain’t no fancy moral to go with this I fear unless you aim to kill a man and drink down his last beer!"

No wonder here. That only means that everyone admits the song and the way it sounds is cool, and - the main important thing - the story within it is really catchy and you want to think about it and want to discuss it. And the lyrics themselves are really impressive. Not only simple storytelling, but the images, the adjectives used within the text (like that 'I knew: he'd travelled far' or the fact how Stanton grinning and laughing with hero's words, and overall reaction of people who are in the bar, and all these details - that's all is just perfectly written and composed. Really impressive thing in result.
