    I wish you gave an explanation on why you think Shinola is garbage instead of talking about their branding. I own two and yes while I agree that they can be pricey I believe you shouldn’t judge it by its marketing mistakes. I’m from Detroit and the first time I needed a new battery and also cleaned up the leather band for me without asking which in my opinion is a company that cares about quality and people. They have an excellent design and build quality. So id first check them out before judging them.

    You should check out this brand again. I have owned a Runwell Shinola for almost 6 years now and it has been fantastic. I own automatic Seiko's, etc. and I feel this brand is just fine. They are providing jobs in Detroit and the build Quality on the pieces are worth the price in my opinion. Yes the quartz movement is nothing special but I feel the fit and finish of the watch makes up for that. All in all its a great looking simplistic piece I can look at on my wrist, get the time, and enjoy knowing I am supporting a company that is made themselves a well made foothold in the City of Detroit. I love your videos, I just feel this one came off a bit to watch snobby in my opinion.

  • @tadeuszlufik
    @tadeuszlufik4 жыл бұрын

    For the watch snob, I can understand the skepticism especially after going into a store where the employees have limited knowledge or lack credibility. For a guy who cares about quality and style but isnt a watch aficionado, I find Shinola appealing - easily above designer watches but not as expensive or as gaudy in style as other high end watches. I would typically not spend over $300 on any kind of watch anyway so when I found a watch with a beige/gold accents on sale over the holidays, I grabbed it and I love the watch. Simple, understated but unique.

  • @danrussell_official
    @danrussell_official2 жыл бұрын

    Ok first off I appreciate the work you do. And you make a good point: shinolas are overpriced and they have some misleading marketing about the origin of their parts and movements (Ronda for quartz and Selita for automatic). That being said - I love shinola watches. I own both a quartz and an automatic. The product design is so sleek in my opinion - I love the trench watch style of the runwell and the heft of the watches is satisfying on the wrist. Their color combos are typically really well thought out and the quality of their leather bands is amazing (although also overpriced - $115 for leather quick release straps 🤨). Anyway to all those who are on the fence about at least a runwell - I can assure you this watch enthusiast (me) is very satisfied with shinola watches.

    Today (Sunday) I was in a NYC Manhattan Upper West Side coffee shop (diner) having a late breakfast and wearing my Omega Seamaster. I was talking with another guy who was alone at the table next to me. He was in his 60's dressed a bit rumpled, but I got the impression that he was well-to-do--maybe recently retired, or maybe still working a bit. I saw that he was wearing a good-size chronograph on a nato, which looked impressive, from where I was sitting. I couldn't see what it was, and I wasn't going to get closer and try to look at his hand, so finally I asked him "What's that chronograph?" He told me "It's from Detroit," so I said "Oh, a Shinola!" He told me he has several other watches that are quite expensive, I asked him what they were. He told me he's got an AP, a Piaget and a Blancpain, but he mostly wears the Shinola now. He said it works great and he likes it a lot. All I can say is just looking at it, in action, on somebody's wrist, the Shinola made a nice impression. And there are people who know watches who buy Shinolas.

It's simple, looks good on the wrist and never needs an adjustment. I love automatics, but I also love the reliability of a quartz. Expensive? Yes, Shinolas are overpriced for what they are. We, however, live in an age of overpriced products, from $350 sneakers to $1,200 cell phones. Guess what, the Shinola will last longer than either of those things. The intelligent viewer might ask; how can someone who has never owned a Shinola make a credible review? The obvious answer is, you can not. I was given an $850 Filson Chronograph as a gift, which is made by Shinola and it keeps better time than my Rolex 24K Presidential and as good as my Cartier. So if anyone is looking for a review with intellectual integrity, thus far I would rate my Filson/Shinola as a ruggedly handsome and accurate timepiece. PS Beautiful crystal case and impeccable attention to detail.

I did not buy my Filson Chronograph (made by Shinola) but it was gifted to me. A Breitling cause the argonaut and Detroit seemed to forma a wing... I came to find what it was instantly cause there were posts on the net. It is not a Panerai, it is not a Hamilton it has kinda his thing going on. I suspire for a Bulova Railroad... This thing has his own american stuff. The great lakes, that kind of thing. So I'm not telling that the movement can be a little crappy or whatever but they could buy some Japan proper movements and assemble them in USA and pack them with a nice buffalo strap and a maple box or whatever. Man at least we should be crediting them for trying to do something in the watch World these days, and I mean designing and crafting not rebranding chinese watches. Eh dont agree with this. I have two shinolas but i do have a comment to how you get the quality and feel from one. If you live outside of michigan and never been to detroit dont buy one. Its like buying a cheese hat outside of Wisconsin. It just doesn’t make sense. Shinola is a detroit brand. Yes, imported parts but it has brought jobs to detroit (good jobs) and the straps are hand stitched and made in house. As for the watch. When you purchase one, people know what shinola is, they know that what the company is. If you live in detroit you know they made bikes, leather goods, and of course watches. Its a retro stye but with a classy touch. Until you actually own one and buy one to feel the experience you then understand alittle more. From the outside i can totally see overpriced and mabye a mixed image but from the inside its a brand like wearing a michigan sweatshirt for watch people. Its definitely home grown price tag but the quality and service you get with one shows it value.

I own one and have slight buyers remorse simply due to the price. But I love the watch and how it looks! Get compliments all the time since it has a unique look to it. He also mentions their “identity crisis”...has he ever bought an American car?? They are not 100% built in America by any measure and use imported parts and components yet people still want to support an American company/brand and buy them because they like them. Which is what it’s all about. It’s not just a “flex” on how much you know about affordable alternatives to high end luxury watches or how it makes you so mad that some people simply like a watch and want to pay for it. This guy probably secretly likes the watch but has to act all hot and bothered to make himself feel better about buying a Seiko.

    I think your criticism is misguided. You're entitled to your opinion of course, but the fact that they are still selling watches to satisfied customers after six years runs counter to your opinion. If the movements and cases were as bad as you say, word would have gotten out and they would have ceased production of watches. Instead they now employ more than 500 people and continue to bring new designs at various price points. I bought my first Shinola watch in 2015, it still looks great and keeps excellent time with the original battery. The build quality is top notch and I get compliments regularly when I wear it. I also just ordered a Detrola Model D 43mm to wear when my original blue-face watch isn't a good match for my clothes. So I am admittedly biased, but people seeing your video should know that there are plenty of Shinola watch owners like me who are very happy with the watches they have purchased. And for reference, I also own automatic watches from Seiko and Tag Heuer as well as a quartz movement Tissot. I like my Shinola as much as the others, and didn't hesitate when the Detrola caught my eye.

    @@fidoliedo ...And yet, people still purchase them. Are they overpriced? Maybe...but what is actually worse? Paying $500+ for a Shinola or paying $25K+ for a Rolex (or $100K+ for a Patek Philippe)? History and craftsmanship aside, at the end of the day, they both do the same thing and the movement inside - Swiss or not, brand heritage or no brand heritage - is only worth so much. People have the right to buy what they like, whether they’re over-paying or not.

    I work in the service film industry and one of my jobs is looking after producers when they come to my country South Africa. (They always ask about this watch) I used to work on a cruise ship around the time this video was made I'm glad I never saw it before buying my watch. A "Guardian Aragonite 705" I think had a listing price of about 700 USD back then which was more than half my monthly paycheck. And back then I would say I was a very frugal person. Cheap as all hell. The hours were long and hard and every day I would walk past the jewelry store and that watch was so beautiful it cheered me up. I got it and it traveled the world with me. It's survived a very hard working environment as one of my other jobs is quite labor intensive. It's the best I would buy more if I could I would recommend it 100 percent. I've wasted a lot of money in my life but this was not.

Also like that your uploads are as long as they need to be for the subject - not the ad revenue. Keep up the great work. I predict your subscribers will climb rapidly and your following will soon be up there with other big watch players. Congrats fella. James

    Thanks for saving me time (is money) cuz I was looking at a story about how Detroit is making a comeback depending on who you ask and of course the internet people kind of redirected me towards some company making watches using u.s. labour and Swiss parts. What could go wrong. So out of curiosity I googled Shinola, clicked on video tab and you kind but my head off for looking. Ok nibbled. Anyways to make a long story longer the time I saved was countered by this comment thanks again. Cheers Bill

    I am not saying he is wrong but where are the Shinola watches he is critiquing? Pretty sure Shinola of any of its distributors would not allow this guy to disassemble a watch or watches without purchasing them! This man is clearly a connoisseur of fine watches that cost many times the price of a Shinola. Maybe the problem here is him and his expectations.

    I saw one of these in TJ Maxx or Marshalls on close out a while back. The retro-vintage cream dial and rounded polished case looked beautiful, but it was the wooden box it was in that really caught my eye. What a magnificent wooden box!! So I asked the clerk to open the display case so I could check out the booklet and see the price on the bottom of the box. 500 bucks for a quartz watch that I never heard of in TJ Maxx/Marshalls seemed ridiculous. I don't remember what the original price was, but the selling price was 500. If it was a mechanical, maybe. But Quartz? The box can't sell it. On the other hand. They're supposedly Swiss parts and assembled in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Detroit. So omitting China from the equation must be very expensive.

    I own a Sub c nd and a Panerai PAM 312 plus two Tags that my wife now wears, an Aquaracer and a Carrera. I am now currently trapped in watch limbo. I can't upgrade to an AP or PP, way beyond my budget. I'm definitely not downgrading to low tier brands (Longines, Ball etc.), more so fashion watches (Shinola, Ingersoll, TW Steel). Been there done that. I guess I'll be stuck with my crown and PAM, which is not a bad thing. I still look at other watches but have lost the desire (mainly because of financial limitations) to acquire newer pieces. I'm happy with what I have, I just never expected to hit a ceiling so soon in watch collecting.

It's perfect. Your videos are short and sweet, which I absolutely love. I like TGV's videos, but don't always feel like sitting through 25 minutes. You keep them simple and yet still give a great amount of information. Your personality is also great. Shinola use Ronda movements. Ronda are "Swiss" but made in China brought back to Switzerland given required Swiss value to be labeled Swiss made shipped to Detroit put in shiny cases and POOF a two hundred dollar watch is now sold for eight hundred or even more. For thousand dollars buy Seiko, Sinn, Oris, Steinhart.

    @@sendyarkida939 Exactly, people criticizing the "overpriced" Shinolas probably own overpriced iPhones and other Apple products, overpriced sneakers and buy $5 cups of coffee at Starbucks every day. I appreciate nice automatic watches, but I also appreciate what Shinola is and provides. My Shinola is five years old and looks brand new. Other than a new battery, I haven't done anything to it and I wear it several times a week. I expect it will continue to run well for a long, long time.
