Released in 1993 as a direct sequel to Sega's classic, The Revenge of Shinobi, Joe Musashi returns once again to do battle with the forces of the notorious crime syndicate, Neo Zeed. Now headed by a mysterious individual known only as The Shadow Master, Musashi must rely on his years of Ninja training if he is to bring down the organisation once and for all.
Just as with other games in the series, the player must guide Musashi through a series of interconnected, side-scrolling levels with plenty of jumping and platforming action to be had. Each level is inhabited by a plethora of bad guys to defeat; from enemy ninja to gun-toting soldiers, everyone wants a piece of Joe Musashi.
Fortunately, Joe has plenty to go around, boasting a lethal arsenal with which to dispatch his foes that includes deadly Kunai blades, martial arts abilities and, most importantly, a razor-sharp sword. When traditional weapons fail, however, Musashi can invoke the powers of might Ninjitsu magic to bolster his abilities. Be it flaming dragons to smite his foes, or granting him super-human leaping abilities, the magic is there to aid you in the most difficult of situations.
Just as before, the player can perform a double-jump to reach the more hard-to-reach platforms by tapping the jump button a second time whilst in the air. Also returning is Musashi's ability to hurl out a fan of Kunai whilst somersaulting - a great way for dealing with multiple foes, especially those lurking below him.
Rounding out Joe's new abilities is the ability to run (double-tap the controller in the same direction), wall-jump and even use his sword to deflect bullets and projectiles. Joe also has the ability to use Kunai to hang from the underside of platforms and ceilings, swinging hand-over-hand to cross the level. There's no denying that the expanded roster of moves makes the game a more dynamic game than it's predecessor.
Also making an appearance in this sequel are a number of special stages that see Musashi fighting against ninja whilst on horseback horseback and from atop a rocket-powered jet-ski; a first for the series. The bad guys are not the only things to watch out for in these sections, as there are plenty of obstacles to avoid as well.
The game features some great artwork and graphics for the time and is noticeably crisper than the previous game. Many levels feature impressive parallax scrolling, plus the scrolling is ultra-smooth and rarely do you notice any kind of drop in frame-rate; Shinobi III really epitomises what you expect from a platform game on a 16-bit machine.
As for audio, it's a shame that Yuzo Koshiro didn't return to pen the music for this sequel. The music is by no means bad, but there's something unmistakable about Koshiro's work that would only have made the game sound even better (in my opinion, at least).
Some people criticise this game for being too easy, but I found it to be just the right level of challenge (believe me, the final level will certainly put your skills to the test). Enemy positions are much more straightforward to deal with and there's far fewer instances where the player gets knocked back into a pit o' doom by bullets from some opponent just off the edge of the screen.
All good things must come to an end, but it's safe to say that Shinobi III is a great way for the series to end. Not only is it more action packed and faster paced, but it looks and feels better than it's predecessors too. I'm not sure I'd call it a classic, but it's still a great title worthy of your attention.

Shinobi III: Longplay (Mega Drive) [60 FPS]: Shinobi III is an excellent third and final instalment in Sega's series for the Mega Drive! Read the video description for my review!

he description for this video is kapping hard af. This the best game on the Sega Genesis, and the best 16bit action game PERIOD. the graphics, art style, music, and gameplay are all tip top. And while the game isn't the hardest, it also doesn't fall all over itself to be difficult, it provides this smooth yet challenging experience that is a joy to play through beginning to end in one sitting. Its like a zen meditation.
The music to this game is awesome.

Revenge of Shinobi is better, it has better music, no slow auto scroll levels like the elevator level or later falling rock level. Revenge maintains a consistent pacing where Shinobi 3 has levels like the lab, later factory and the level which you have to pick the right doors with the crushing spikes - all these levels feel a bit like the brakes are being slammed on. Revenge has great pop culture cameos like Terminator, Rambo, Spiderman, batman and Godzilla, and even the final boss from the arcade game Shinobi who you fight in a disco in revenge.

@@Bloodyshinta1 beaten it , I know all the moves like jump kicking off enemies and all the secret bits like the upper chests in the early cave level, I think I read somewhere the Joe from gamesack finds the elevator level and such slow frustrating as well but I'm a day one Megadrive owner so revenge has a more special place in my heart. I think most early adopters of the Megadrive prefer revenge over 3

@@danielnicholson6174 You didn't even mention the run which is the defining feature of that game. The ability to run through the level and use the invincible running slash to avoid projectiles and deal damage while moving forward it was separates Shinobi 3 from almost all the other games like it. It was like a fusion of Sonic the Hedgehog and Shinobi into a game with a crazy amount of depth in how you could improve at it while not making the game unbeatable without learning or mastering it. Watching someone who utilizes all of Joe's new moves as the effortlessly go through the level at top speed is what sets Shinobi 3 apart. No matter how many times you play shinobi 2 you're always going to be moving at the same speed doing the same things, Shinobi 3 has an ENTIRE different layer of mechanics to get better at and give replicability to the game. Shinobi 2 is a good game but Shinobi 3 is a masterpiece.

Juegazo!! El OST es fenomenal!
I Never played this game. It Is One of those I only watched my older Brother playing. We Lost the PC which had It (Never had It on console), and more than 10 years later, got It in another computer. He played THE SHIT OUT of It, used a saved state and defeated the final boss thousands of times. On of those, he discovered you can block attacks. After years of playing and replaying, After owning and taking vengeance on all those challenges... he discovered How to block attacks.

Shadow Dancer (shinobi 2) always gets left out by Genesis fans. I think it's the best in the Trilogy, maybe cause i like dogs😄
1:18 los shinobis debería ser eternos.
25:40 how you passed across?? I just can't do this shit! I always fallling down and loosing my lifes, cursing Gods and Demons, thinking it is some kind of glitch. In fact this, here, is the only Walkthrough of Shinobi III in KZread that doesn't skip over this "secret" area.

Well done on making it across - it's tough to do! You have to crouch-jump in just the right place to make it across without falling down the hole.
