    The chain sizing advice is so simple compared to other videos I've watched and it wasn't even the main topic!

    Thanks for the guide, just installed an 11-40 cassette on my road bike and I love it! Interestingly, before cutting the chain, I sized it using both the small-small and big-big method, and the length came out the exact same. It's weird Shimano has such conservative recommendations, right now my setup requires 45t of capacity, which is significantly more than the 39t listed in the specs of my R8000 derailleur, yet I can use all gear combinations without any excess chain slack.

    Ultegra RX RD supposed to accomodate a max low cog of 34, and a total capacity of 39t. We're wayy over that here and I see it works anyway so I'm doing it next time I need to hit the steep steep roads. I have 50/34 and 11/34 right now which is at shimano's max 39t total and the max cog of 34. Great to find this.

    Kind regards from Tasmania. Excellent coverage of the subject matter; many thanks. I have arranged my bike shop to do exactly this for me before collecting my new GRX810 gravel bike (due next week). Some other shops would probably refuse but I like my shop because they think outside the square like you do. Again thanks; excellent clear explanation with absolutely no waffle; the perfect mix. 😀

    Great video, very useful as usual. What I don't fully understand is this freehub spacer. What is a spacer for? You took off road cassette and put MTB cassette but still used the spacer so it can't be the cassette offset. Difference must be in the feehub body itselt. I have DT Swiss weel with MTB freehub a 11-40 XTR cassette and RX800 rear deraileur. Do I need to use any spacers to make it work on a gravel bike with Ultegra road shifters?

    Your chain whip tool is intriguing - do you have a link to it? I find the classic whip to be less than satisfactory! Which model of cassette do you use?? Great video and explanation - one commenter explained why a spacer was needed, in that the mountain bike cassette is not flat like a road cassette.

    My mistake, it is indeed a Ultegra RX not GRX so it is 50-34. Many reviewers have commented that Shimano are quite conservative with their maximum cassette size, there are others doing this with a GRX815 which is the gravel equivalent of the electric Ultegra but not a well explained as this video.

    I bought a CSM 7000 Cassette (11-40) and tried to fit it with this exact same ultegra detrailleur...but somehot the spacing seems to be wider that on the regular ultegra cassette...I thought the spacing was supposed to be exactly the same on all 11 speed cassettes? Did I miss something?I used calipers to measure the distance between the individual sprockets, and there seemed to be a larger gap between the CSM7000 gears than between the ultegra gears, so that there was no possibility to index correctly...Is that possible or am I just completely stupid? ;) thanks!!

    I think I have the same issue too. I was switching from slx 11-34 that was originally installed on my topstone 1 with 11-40 slx and I have this weird noise while pedaling =\ Did you find a solution or have you tried xt cassette?

  • @tidalwavestudio

    @tidalwavestudio

    hello there, I tried again, and this time, all went well…indexing was as easy as with the original cassette. No idea what was wrong the first time, but since I installed it, I did around 1000km without any issue 🤠 so I guess you need to check that everything is seated correctly and you may have to index your shifting freshly. parktools has a brilliant video on how to adjust rear derailleurs, in case you sometimes struggle to get it right :) good luck!!
