My one year old Ultegra crank set started creaking so I followed your advice which worked perfectly. No more annoying creak. Thanks for posting
Your frame is perfectly clean and not a scratch around BB area- this is extremely pleasing to see as most of mine look like victims of bear attacks.
Good content. I've had a similar issue with my R8000 crankset and changed out the bottom bracket entirely. Went for a test ride and the creaking didn't go away. It turned out my cassette lockring was not tight. Torqued it to spec and bam, no more creaking.
I appreciate the detailed, step-by-step presentations.
This absolutely works and is definitely worth doing. Don't rush out and replace your BB. As they say aside from the whoosh of your tyres on the road and the clicking of your freewheel your bike should be silent!
Great video! Twice this type of issue has plagued me with what I thought was a bad BB. One time I only had to remove the cranks, clean, regrease, reinstall and boom! No more creak. Your attention to detail is fantastic. Very impressed!! Top man!
My R8000 crankset developed an annoying tick with each pedal rotation, did a complete strip down virtually identical to this and noticed the security tabs pin was loose and bent. Replaced it for a couple of quid and hey presto, no tick. Got to hand it to Shimano, they do make things easy to work on.
Thank you for bring this to everyone's attention. i do this exact drill once a year on my Dura Ace 7950 crankset and have been for 15 years. Also, so easy to clean and re grease threads on the bottom bracket providing its threaded. Never any noises coming from the cranks. Same on pedal threads and I always use paraffin wax on my pedal surfaces where the shoes and cleats make contact. so easy to do. save yourself the aggravation of listening to unwanted noises coming from the crank. Works wonders on Shimano 24mm hollow tech systems. On others setup's, I cant comment.
Thanks for this video. I have the same problem on my new Canyon Slx with less than 500km on it. I always use a torque wrench and stick to the torque specs. You saved me some cash.
Whoa great timing, my bike just started creaking this past week, and it's driving me nuts. I'm for sure going to give this a go.

I swear to God, 4h before he posted the video mine started to do the same.😂😂😂 Excellent timing! Thx!
You Sir do the best videos! I used one of your videos for a derailleur a while back, worked like a charm. I have the clicking sound coming from a Dura Ace crank on one of bikes, (I never ride that bike in wet conditions, so I know it's not the corrosion issue with these cranks). I will go through the procedures you showed in your video and see what happens. Thank you for taking to time to help out your fellow cyclists!
Thank just what I was looking for and needed I couldn’t workout where the noise was coming from great video 🙏👍🚵♀️
yeah it works. i had a creaking triple crankset. greasing the chainring bolts was enough to fix it for me
Thanks a million for this guide. Was close to booking my bike to shop and this video popped up. Thought I would give it a try on my 2020 105 r7000, couple of basic tools required. Just come back from its maiden voyage and the clicks/creaking has gone, fantastic 😁
Thanks. Perfect timing as I am changing my crank this weekend
About a year ago I did the same thing and it's still good.
Excellent- got the squeak. about to replace 😊BB but will try this first.
Thanks for the video, I was about to replace my push fit b/b as it was creaking like a wicker basket or so I thought. I followed your video and hey the sound of silence job sorted😁!
Good tip. I'll try this before swapping out the b.b.
This worked for my GRX 600 crankset
Gonna give this a whirl.. My GRX cranks are creakin and squeakin... BBs around 6 months old. 🙏👍
Brilliant, wish I found this before I had bought the new bottom bracket. But thanks…. Creak free riding now😊
Followd your steps and it fixed my problem. Thanks so much.
Brilliant
Thank you very much, very informative as always, keep up great work. 👍
Thanks man appreciate your posting this video mate
My Token Ninja BB was definitely seized on one side, so I swapped it. Perfect for a couple of rides, then non drive side creak developed. It turned out to be a loose pedal as I often under torque them. The chain was overdue, so I changed it and bam lots of low-level crunch when using the inner front ring under load / climbing. As the bike is 7 years old and well used I figure the new chain is not happy with the likely worn inner ring. Ordered a new one for £15 and will follow all the advice you've given here. To be honest though I'm really in the mood for a new bike 😂!
Thank you so much for this video. My GRX cranks were creaking under power. I applied antiseize to the chainring bolts but didn't apply any to the mating surfaces of the chainring and crank arm. Quiet as a mouse after following your video.
This video has been a great help. New subscriber 👍.
Thanks!
with the current recall out on a lot of these and the 6800s its prob worth considering if they're just cooked and starting to crack. hate to see people go through all this and then have their crancks break completely.
Thanks for the video! It s silent again👍👍
A good shout. Drivetrain noises often have a nasty habit of coming from the least expected component I find 😂. I have just one question, is it always cold in your workshop, even in the summer?

Good question! I always wonder the same. :)
Will try anti-seize on the mating surfaces, had the worst creaking since I got my new ultegra from the recall. Swapped to a token bb, rebuild my headset, hub service, new cable inners and outers and but only put anti-seize on the chainring bolts themselves. Will try this is a last resort before I'm officially done trying.
Thank you
👌great video, got the same creaking on my deore hollowtech 2, tried cleaning an greasing the bolts an surfaces😱but its still there😏the bottom bracket is only a few months old👍🤔
@Free To Cycle ...thanks a tonne for this! The timing was perfect, as my Ultegra crankset started creaking a few weeks ago and you read my mind! Question: I wonder why you chose copper grease, and not just standard? Thx
Good video. I tried everything, only to find that the chainset had cracked. Driveside. Please check, if it fails completely you could easily crash. The crank arm separates from the rings. A common ish failure, which shimano won't acknowledge..

Yep, a lot of folk (Think even Hambini) saying if you're using Shimano get the 105 R7000 cranks as the DA and Ultegra ones are total crap and delaminate and break way more than they will ever admit....as in "recall" territory....
Don’t suppose you fancy doing a video for Sram Rival AXS making similar noises???
Thanks for the video. I will try your approach with my creeking crankset. Whats your opinion on the copper grease on aluminium topic?
It Works ! Thx for the info ! Now the only thing that creaks is the cassete . Its brand new 105 - RS7000 . The only problem i found is my T25 tool has little gap when i put it at chairing bolts (it doesnt fit well )When i set the torque at 10Nm all bolts "kicks" . Tiny parts comes off from all bolts. Should i buy new ones for my next cleaning?
Damn. This came in too late. I was hearing creaking and seriously considered changing the bottom bracket.. until my small ring got itself loose, as all 4 bolts got loose and fell off. And those bolts are hard to find. There was nothing wrong with my bottom bracket. WTF Shimano!

My really bad creaking was just down to one loose bolt on the small ring just after it had been serviced. Quick tighten and cured.

Check yer bike more often
Been watching your videos, great thanks. I've just put a 386 token ninja bb in and I've got play with the crank still. Is wear in a 105 crank spindle common?
Hi, shimano will release new 12s mech 105 at sep, can you do a compatible test video about 12s 105 with the FD of r7000/8000 & rx810? And 12s road doul controller with 12s MTB RD & cassette? I think the mtb and road RD will have the same pull ratio at this time.
Happened to my this creaking found out it was the chain rings creaking on the bolts nothing to do with the BB.
I realized my 8020 crankset didnt come with an o-ring of the right side, do I need to buy one? Is it a plastic O-ring or a spacer?
When i push on uphills driveside creaks ( 3 o clock to 6 o clock) . Also sometimes a loud instant sound (clicking metal) . So i have to try this before change BB . how many kms BB lasts? I have 13.5k on mine.
What type of grease is being used here please? Any particular brand of preference? Thanks.

We've used MucOff copper compound, It's been great.
Should I get copper grease or just try general bike grease first?
@FreeToCycle

You can use general bike grease!

@@FreeToCycle thank you!
All these multi part crankets are problematic, I had brand new Easton with chainring bend straight from the factory, I replaced it with monoblock Rotor chainset and have no problem with rubbing and noises. Never again.
Hello, How often des the noise come from the chainrings ? Why doesn't the video go on with detai about the bottom bracket, which is not so expensive by the way
Hallo,my name is Eko, i am from Indonesia, Surabaya City. My crankset ultegra FC6800 (code LG), my crank arm de-laminasi and cracks😭😭 I need help contacting Shimano. Please can you help me Thank you

You can contact Shimano directly but all they will tell you to do is contact a Shimano Authorised Service Centre. All the bike shops that are Shimano Authorised will take your cranks, inspect them and tell you if they need replaced, or not.

Marginal gain tip… omit the seals for less friction. Down side is less weather and particulate protection requiring more regular inspection and greasing of the bearings.
you should never ever be continuing riding a bike day after day of a consistent creek or click. in 95% of cases it will cost less now to fix it regardless of the cost compared to what it will cost after that part wears out.
Shimano hollowtech cranks are pure trash
