Very good review. I found it interesting that you noted the clash has a weakness in keeping water out of the shaft. I had a Penn Clash 3000 that salted up at the shaft bearing after two years and would not release. I rinsed it off religiously after striper fishing up here in Boston. Happened anyway. Of course, I later noticed I forgot one of the two little brown o-rings when I did lubing the year before. That did not stop me from buying two new Penn Clash IIs this year. They seem like they are much improved and more salt-proof and I am happy with them . Although I love Penn, I absolutely love my Shimano Torium 14 HG conventional reel more than any other reel I own, so may give a Stradic a try next year.

Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod kzread.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.

I've bought Penn Spinfisher IV 2500 and a Shimano Stradic CI4+ 2500 at the same time. I fished them both equally off a jetski and gave them the same after use rinse. The shimano stradic had to go for repairs (under warrantee) then it died the following season and is now in a landfill somewhere. The Penn Spinfisher is still perfect and hasn't even had a service yet. I was so impressed with Penn Spinfisher that I went out and bought 3 different sizes of the next model up (Penn Slammer). I've been so impressed with them that I've now sold my Daiwa Saltist 4000 LTD and Shimano Saragosa to get a Penn Authority. I fish a lot here in New Zealand and I like Shimano, I have Talica 8ii and I've even just bought a Beastmaster 9000A electric, but when it comes to spinning reels, I now only fish Penn IPX rated reels. I also had a Shimano Stella 2500 FE which cost me over $500 in servicing in 3 years!! WTF. Sold it! I'm told it was an older fresh water reel, but never again. I'd rather have a slammer than a stella

I have fished Penn reels for decades, and I have a tremendous amount of confidence in them. Don't get me wrong, my other reels get fished a lot. But for some reason, I go back to Penn time and again.

After 40 years here is my take. I have owned many of each brand. THis is my recent experience: Penn...QC has crashed. Shimano...they start great but wear out fast. Daiwa...been the most reliable and seem to get even smoother the more you use them. Mag Seal is why. But for the average punter, all are fine. But if you earn a living from fishing or you are out there many times a week, I'd go with a Daiwa BG MQ at that price point.

Just bought the Newest 2021 Shimano Vanford C3000, not on sale, just normal shop price 293$ only 74$ More than the Static FL, it's a nice wheel, but when you get the newest Vanford in your hands it's like a Stella FT, next is to really upgrade my Vanford with 3-4 New bearings, to be better than the Stella FT, I have not seen a 14 bearing Vanford upgrade, it might not be possible, but the 12 bearing upgrade is cool.. Should be good enough to be a wheel for life, if maintained :) But your 180-220$ wheel compared to eachother is OK, I would like to have Abu Garcia's 200$ wheel in the mix, maybe a more extensive research, the wheels are very different, I sat that Penn is not a SW wheel only rivers and lakes, no Ocean, in my opinion Penn never do it right theres allways something they could have done for 2$. O-ring, some round flat rubber sealing. The inside construction is what semi good ones had 20-30 years ago. But keep on doing better and better recordings... GL

The Stradic FL is not all Shimano claims. They missed a global home run on it for the following: 1. No folding handle. 2. No service port. 3. No cloth protective bag. 4. No reverse. I don't care for it but others will. 5. The "Taller spool" claim is false. It's not anything taller than a Stradic 1000MgFB spool. I measured 1mm taller between the two. It is smoother than other models I will say and the bail is smoother also. I still love the FL. Chenaged to all bearings and its basically a Stella now.

I have no brand loyalty. Have penn, daiwa, and Shimano reels. For inshore and finesse fishing at the $200-$250 price point I’m going Shimano every time… the ballistic LT’s are good reels too but no comparison to a stradic FL in my opinion. Depends on the price point and the application for me when I buy a reel, not the brand but even in that $100 range, that new NASCI looks like it’s going to dominate the inshore market in that price point. At least in the Southeast Florida market anyways. The penn battle III looks interesting but for the price point I’d still go Daiwa or Shimano. If you want a lifer, saltwater reel that’s no frills, but will last forever reel go with an old Penn Spinfisher SS or Senator for saltwater fishing. Penn’s new stuff isn’t as durable anymore as they claim and Penn falls way behind in terms of smoothness, and weight, at least with their inshore reels than Daiwa and especially Shimano. Now admit I haven’t fished the clash or clash II, and I’m sure it’s a great reel but for the price point and application I’d go Shimano every time

I love Shimano and Daiwa reels, when they're brand new. When they get to be a few years old and they've seen a little sand, an occasional dunking, and a few of the rocks off Pemaquid Light... not so much. There is another channel on KZread called Sea-Money Fishing. My experiences are identical to his. If you use a reel hard, you can expect to be happy with your Shimano or Daiwa right up to the time that they declare it "OBSOLETE" (usually three to five years) and then you're screwed. If it wasn't for eBay, where plenty of other people have had the exact same problems I have and they're unloading them for cheap, I would have no sources for parts. So, as long as you can fix it yourself from dead donor reels, you may be able to keep it going a bit longer. And forget about the parts clearing houses like Mike's Reel Repair. It seems they're the first ones to get cleaned out when the factories stop providing the parts. On the other hand, in the past eight years or so I've seen Penn improve the quality of their reels. The Slammer and Torque are as good a surf reel as anything I've seen made by anybody else. And, they'll hold up better than the best of what the Japanese can muster. All this while providing just about any part I've ever needed. Your only other option, if you want GOOD and rugged, is to bight the bullet and get a Van Staal or a ZeeBass. As far as I know, there isn't a part on these reels that the factory or service centers can't provide.

Bitterly disappointed with the Penn Clash. I returned the first 4000 i ordered because the line lay was abysmal, even using custom shims. The second, replacement, reel was also awful, bearing in mind the cost . Line lay is one of the most important things to review, yet hardly anyone demonstrates this.It also feels slightly hard to wind, no doubt that's the water seals. I've gone back to my Shimano Stradics, which seem to be the best buy for me, because casting ability with light lures is important to me. Penn should stick to multipliers, in my opinion.

I had the exact same problem. Returned it and got the Stradic ci4+ hbfg 2500. Added on the super tune bearing kit and funny enough I found the only difference between the 2500 and 3000 is the spool capacity. They fit on either so I bought myself a 3000 spool so I basically have two reels now. When I originally picked up the box I didn't think there was a reel in it, it was so light. Incredible reel for the price. All I was doing was giving another brand a chance and Penn to me failed. I've used Stradic's since the 90's and now I know why.
