I also snapped two savage gear trout rods that where pretty expensive here trout fishing in Poland with in the first few trips of using them . Switched back to a cheaper Shimano rod have put it through hell for over a year now with any problems!

The only gripe I have with this reel is the weight, but that goes with the size of the reel kzread.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I brought this salmon fishing up in Oswego, NY. I coupled it with a Cabela's Whuppin Stick. I had no problem pulling in a 14lb salmon. I will probably use this for surf fishing this summer and downgrade to a 3500 series Battle II next salmon season to save my wrists. All of the operations are butter smooth and the bail is nice and thick and has a solid flip to it. Everything about this reel is sturdy and strong. The drag system held up to the salmon and was also super smooth. I did use a scale to set the drag properly before going out to the river and this worked out tremendously. A bunch of other guys on the river would hook up and snap almost immediately. Just because you have a good drag system doesn't do anything if you don't set it correctly.

Saltist reels are great! I’ve had a 3000 and 4000 for a couple of years now and they are just as good as they day I took them out of the box. Super smooth reels and can take a beating.

I had to add solder to some spoons to get them out far enough for casting because I didn't have enough heavy lures to get out far enough. I caught mostly trout and some salmon when the tide was right and the trout could go out into the ocean a little bit. I had once a nailed a bald eagle and had to have a game warden hold it because he had gloves to unhook it. This was at the East Alsek river up in Alaska on my one day a week I had off.

don't own any savage gear rods but if they are graphite (i assume they would be) you have to be super careful with them, any chips or nicks and they will break, thats all graphite rods, super strong when structurally in tact but if there is any weakness they break.

Man that really sucks about the rod breaking!!! Hope they cover it under way for you. Reel is awesome. A possible solution for you with all the plastics getting bitten in half, tie on a trailer hook to the main hook and bury it in the tail of the bait. I've been doing this for years when jigging and bottom bouncing different trout species here in the GTA, works fantastic. All those short strikes started turning into landed fish in a BIG HURRY.

I mean while those savage gear rods seem sensitive , I don’t think it’s because of great components, I think they simply just use the minimum amount of materials to make them light, and they feel like they are brittle , i too broke my savage gear rod and it’s an XH swimbait rod , tip broke casting a 1.5oz lure (made for 1-6oz)

Im just back from a 1 week surf fishing vacation.. i live in a city where there is no beach.. i am like 800 miles from the my favorite beach.. so i can only go there on vacation .. anyway, i bought a saltist 5000 and paired with a 10feet rod.. what a nice combo. I got a 27 inch red drum.. and the reel did not even force. It was kinda easy to pull the 27 inch red drum out of the water. I also have a shimano bait runner 4000 and when fish is pulling and reel handle rolling motion kinda become jerky on the shimano.. not on the saltist. But saltist line has changed this year.. i bought the 5000 saltist.. but daiwa replaced the serie with the MQ. Serie.. the 5000 is not the same as the 5000 mq.. daiwa changed the scale… to get the same with the mq serie, you need the mq 10000.. which i don't know if they even make it…. The saltist mq 5000 is a much more small reel than the original saltist 5000.. not only the mq is smaller but also more expensive. Next year i will buy another surf rod, i will probably go with another saltist.. oh as you are aware sand can kill any reel.. i had sand on the reel on many occasions.. luckily no sand got into the reel… always bring a water bottle to remove the sand that accidentally get on the reel..

Well, we’ll see how the following goes on the Savage Gear topic. I’ll report back here in a month. Recently picked up 3 savage gear surf rods….one 9’2” medium 0.75-2oz, one 10’2” medium 1-5oz, and one 10’6” medium heavy 2-6 oz. Fuji reel seats and Fuji K guides. Local company had them on clearance and I have about $80 per rod in them. I take care of my gear but do fish a lot (space coast). Guess only time will tell…….I’ll let u all know UPDATE: 11/16/21 have fished all three rods over a dozen times. So far all have handled fine. Like the guides nice and smooth. No big fish yet. All whiting, pompano, few reds, mackerel, blues and bonnet heads. Used the 9’2” for casting spoons and plugs at inlet. 2 nice over slot snook. No issues so far. Not bragging or holding my breath…..
