Just wanted to thank you for all of your extremely helpful videos on Di2, adding the wireless module, E Tube project, etc. Everything you covered was spot on, and worked exactly how you showed it would, including the wireless module quitting part way through the initial update and bricking the bike! I would have been in total panic mode, but I just followed your steps and it worked the second time and all works great now. I had the opportunity to spend a couple weeks in Sydney and the east coast of Australia in late January just before Covid hit. What a beautiful country and such nice people! Thanks again!

Shane...Thanks for another great video. I too had to retry and reconnect to Bluetooth two times before firmware update took place. After that, I went through everything like a hot knife through butter! I even was able to update my Garmin 1030 so I can scroll back and forth from page to page and see all my data as I ride! Thanks again!

I can't thank you enough for this video. Like many of your commenters I had exactly the same experience installing the wireless unit. It seems like bricking the bike should just be a step in Shimano's instruction sequence.

You are a lifesaver! I bought my Di2 Dura Ace equipped bike from Canyon online so when I bricked it, I didn't feel I could take it to my local store. I had all the problems you had with adding the EW-WU111, with the firmware, with the Bluetooth-LE connection, etc. Without your videos, I'd still be on a 1-speed! After having crashed during the firmware update and then restoring everything with a PC, I was unable to connect over Bluetooth-LE. I kept getting and error. But your tip about going into the settings on my phone and removing the EW-WU111 was great -- that fixed it. Everything connected and then it updated the firmware of my WE-WU111 and bingo. Finally I am connected to my Garmin. Wow, this was a lot harder than with SRAM. I have a Shimano bike and a SRAM bike and I've become a SRAM convert through this. (BTW, I did not need to do the step of disconnecting the Di2 battery to get the PC to talk to the system after the firmware debacle. It is a good thing because on my Canyon the battery is not in the seat tube but rather down in bottom bracket and not readily accessible.) Thanks so much!!

My install went flawlessly, once I figured out how to get the Di2 unit into pairing mode (hold the button down until both lights flash). I updated the w111 unit first via E-TUBE app, and then used the E-TUBE app to update each component. Once the install shows 100%, you need to wait 30-45 seconds before the app comes back to tell you the update was completed successfully. There is a bit of a delay; wait for the confirmation. So it seems the software has been improved. “Happy Days!”

Thanks so much - this helped a ton. I tried doing it without disconnecting my battery and it did brick everything. The battery for my Canyon Aeroad is in a super inconvenient place that requires taking the bottom bracket out to access, but luckily I was able to sneak some pliers in there and made it work without having to do major surgery. Thanks for the guidance!

Hi Caleb, I ordered the EW-WU111 for my 2021 Canyon Aeroad but am a bit worried about the bricking issue... As you said, the battery is located in a terrible place, so having to unplug it would be very challenging . What's unclear to me is the following however: would it not be enough to just unplug the EW-WU111 unit from the system, and reconnect it as it initially was? (I am planning on placing it inside the cockpit instead of a EW-JC200 junction box I found there) Or does it really need to be the battery?

I was SO happy that I hooked my complete DI2 system up before installing it on the bike. That way, that bricking happened with all the components just lying in a pile on my bed (yes, I built my bike in my apartment because it's the only place available) and it was quite easy to figure out that unplugging the battery from the rest of the system, and re-connecting it, un-bricked my system, and after that the unit actually seemed to have the new firmware version. Also I was hoping to see to play with the hood buttons and using them to flip between the screens on your Bolt and Garmin (that should work right out of the box) just because anything wireless is magic. :) Oh, and just for the hell of it, I would rename that EWWU111 to something else, like "Shanes Blue Flame" or whatever the number of available characters allow you to. That way it will be easier for you to know if it's your bike or Vons bike you're reprogramming. :)

Read that changing the password could causing the bricking. I X’d out of that part leaving at 000000 and it worked. Also did the firmware update with the saddle out so the phone was lying on the Bluetooth unit. Anyway - worked well. I like using the hoods to flip between screens and seeing my gearing on the Bolt, so worth it for me. After all that and the money for the unit and extra cable, it’s really is kinda ridiculous that it isn’t just integrated. Kinda cheap/greedy of Shimano. And confusing with the naming conventions. Thanks again for the walk through - not sure I’d have been able to figure it out otherwise

Great video as is all your instructional content. Just one caveat. You might want to add that if you have connectivity issues with your head unit when the EW-WU111 is mounted in the seat tube, as I did with my 2021 Pinarello Prince, consider moving it closer to the cockpit. Luckily for me, the built-in ETUBE junction A box is in the downtube and I was able to install the wireless unit much closer to my Garmin Edge 530. Once safely stowed there, I had no connection issues and no more "beep" each time the unit would reconnect as it was when installed in the seat tube. Thanks again for all the great content.

Hi Shane, I had the same issue with my initial install of the WiFi module in the seat tube i.e. dropped out at 10% of firmware update. Like you, unplugging everything and reconnecting fixed the issue. I have done several firmware updates on other components over Bluetooth with no issues. What is annoying, on the Elemnt Bolt is that the only way to see the Di2 battery level is to go into the sensor in the setup screen, no way that I can see to have the battery show on the ‘pages’ screen. Hopefully Wahoo will add that in a future update. What is cool is programming the hood buttons etc, pretty slick stuff.

Today I picked up my new bike from the local bike shop. Got the Ultegra R8070 groupset wit the ew-wu111 (in-line under the handlebar). After seeing this vid I got a little nervous about connecting and doing the ew-wu111 firmware update. So I decided to connect witht he e-tube program on a windows laptop first. All my components needed a firmware update (guess the LBS couldn't be bothered). I'm happy to report that the firmware of all components, including the ew-wu111, CAN be updated using the charging cable that comes with the R8070 groupset and the windows e-tube program (v3.4.3). Took 5 mins and 45 seconds and....happy days!!!

Good stuff. Here's another way to get wireless connectivity for your Di2: Shimano's SC-MT800 display unit. It may not be a good fit for bikes with Di2 pre-installed (as far as the wiring goes) but I'm really pleased with all the functionality it packs for just $80 USD (on sale). It gives you Bluetooth and ANT+, a 3 port junction, charging port, and of course the display. Works with any modern eTube Di2 setup but does require the updated "Bluetooth" battery.

Lesson learned: try electronics before "buttoning things up". Pretty SOP, like in building a computer, or automotive electronics... Always make sure things work before putting everything back together and tidying all the wires up with zip ties. That said, THANKS a bunch for these introduction to electronic shifting. It's very interesting to learn about and practical as well, as I would imagine IF I ever buy a new bike, it mostly likely would come with this.

Shane, this and the rest of the “Ewok” series of your videos were great help in getting mine installed configured. Just like yours, my configuration seem to have gone to a good start. Just after starting e-tube (iOS) app, it said it needs to apply an update without even asking for the default passkey and reported update was “successful”. Then it did not accept the pass key at all! I had to start the PC e-tube app, and was able to set my own pass key, and was also able to update the firmware via PC app. Then I was able to setup the Garmin head unit setup and the rest. One funny thing though, even though both iOS and PC apps see the crankset correctly, somehow it’s reported to Garmin head unit wrong (53-34). I’m hoping it will have reset to the correct crankset values in the morning when it has a chance to go to sleep and wake up for my morning ride. Thanks to your trials and tribbleulations ;), I didn’t lose my cool and was able to set the unit up. Thanks again.

I had purchased the EW-WU111 when I was building up my bike last year and from what I recall, notes mentioned it would be recommended to install as close as possible to the head unit/computer. Distance does make a difference. With that in mind, I was able to locate the wires and unit internally on the downtube and have no issues updating/communicating on updates. Not sure if you have the time or patience to re-install it after playing/riding with it.

I watched this before adding the wireless unit. Install went ok and then connected to the E-TUBE app where the wireless unit needed an update. Update was successful but I had a bricked Di2 unit. Having a canyon with it’s less than accessible battery I decided first to turn off Bluetooth on my phone. Doing that the Di2 on the bike came back to life. Whew, as I didn’t really want to access the battery. Also, for the password you can just X out of the reset screen and it will stay all 0’s.

Good video. I tried something different that worked perfectly. Just plug the PCE1 Windows USB interface directly into the EW-WU111 on the workbench before you put it on the bike or connect it to anything else. You can do all the firmware update and unit configuration with 0 danger of bricking your bike. After setup, then install the EW-WU111 on your bike and it works perfectly first time!

Firmware updates make me nervous. There's always that slight chance that something might go terribly wrong and something getting bricked. Good to see that you could get it back up and running again. Also noticed that you were shifting on the back and it wouldn't shift past the 9th sprocket in the back. I guess you were in the small ring in the front and the DI2 prevented you from cross chaining :) So cool that electronic shifting is looking out for your chain and drive train health overall :D

DI2 is actually a easy build compared to mechanical. The trick is to lay everything out beforehand and make sure it all works. Then think through your build in terms of what access you will need around seat posts, bars, bottom bracket and stem. I would also suggest having one of the Park wire guide kits. It will save you hours and the $100's that will end up in the swear jar.

I think that if the updates are performed BEFORE the EW-WU111 is placed back inside the frame the updates are more likely to be successful. The carbon fiber can be a bit of a shield. Also, keep the cell phone close to the EW-WU111.

Don't forget carbon frames can be conductive and therefore may offer a level RF screening to the Di2 wireless module, which is probably why you had the problem. Best to place this module outside of the frame between the cables that go from the handlebars and the other Di2 components in the frame.

Whenever using the Bluetooth to update anything, I would recommend not having the module buried inside of the bike, especially with a carbon frame. The carbon fiber is a natural barrier to radio signals and can cause the interruption that you experienced. If you check the signal strength with it in the seat tube and outside of the seat tube, my guess is that you will notice a marked improvement outside of the seat tube.

Hey Shane. I did the same upgrade about a month ago... But as I have the ultegra 6870 di2, I replaced the shifters to r8050 to get the hood buttons to shift the elemnt pages. Hooked it all up, nothing. Then had to get the upgraded battery, dn110. After that fine. Although the battery is completely discharging, even without being ridden, in about 2 weeks. I did a firmware update released last week for the wireless unit and battery which promises to improve battery usage, so let's see the outcome. Incidentally, I also tried out the ew 101 ( wireless unit with both cable ports on the same side and mounted on the seat stay) and it didn't interface with the wahoo, so I swapped for the in line ew111. Ultimately, a lot of expense for seemingly minor mods, but operating the wahoo without taking hands off the shifters has increased safety, I can see what gear I'm in from the wahoo, so don't need to look down at the cogs, I can upgrade firmware from the mobile app and it was a fun project.

I had the exact same problem as you :D Only I wasn't so lucky to get it going again. After borrowing a tablet (Android) I could get the firmware updated (Android versions of the app are different for phone and tablet) In my TCR (size L) I got signal drops with WU111-module connected to the 820. I've now put inside my handlebars and no more drops. Bit sad to see that the Wahoo doesn't display actual gear ratio like the Garmin (53-11 format), I really like this on my Garmin.

Thanks video was useful. I had the same problem with a Canyon bike but it was not possible to disconnect the battery (as in the downtube). Etube app was missing front and rear derailleurs after the EW-WU111 crash. After lots of head scratching, I disconnected the wires into the front and rear derailleurs for a minute and reconnected, hey presto then appeared in the etube app - all sorted.

In regards to battery. For some reason, Wahoo cannot seem to get a battery level displayed on the screen for the element and you have to go into the main menu page and hit 'more' on the Di2 sensor. They have said that they are working on it.

The exact same thing happened to me as well when I tried to update the firmware of EW-WU111 via BT using the E-TUBE iOS app. Unfortunately for me, I wasn't able to disconnect the wireless module because it was hidden in the handle bar and I didn't want to remove the bar tape just to get to the wireless module! I ended up borrowing a SM-PCE1 from a friend and rolled back the failed firmware update. After successfully rolling back the firmware update, I proceeded to update the firmware using the E-TUBE PC app (via the Di2 batter charger). I will NEVER update the firmware on the wireless module wirelessly again.

Thanx Shane, excellent vid. Same thing happened when I updated the firmware after installing the unit in the seat tube. I think there is a firmware glitch in having to change the default passcode before you update the firmware. I think the firmware gets confused about which code has been logged in so you have to reboot using the changed code. Can’t wait until your next vid to show how to configure data fields on Garmin 1030. I can’t see how to change shift mode ... mine stuck on Manual and pressing button on Junction Box only toggles between wireless mode (flashing red/green) and adjustment mode (solid red)

Yep, changing the code is what screws it. I should have left it default for the update and changed it after. You can change gear shift modes on the 1030 under the Di2 sensor options.

Regarding Torque listed on bike, my LBS told me that is a maximum torque, not what you should set it at. I always used to treat it as the required torque and set it to that with my torque wrench, but then the collar around the seatpost snapped...

I did the connection from the junction box, not my battery, which was on my down tube (Pinarello). Followed the steps, and yes it crashed my system; nothing on my di2 worked. I deleted the Etub app from my phone. Downloaded the Etub software from Shimano to my computer, plugged the charger to the junction box and the other end (USB) to my computer. Right away noticed the software indicated my di2 battery was dead. Charged the battery. Re-connected to computer and was able to do an update to a derailleur that was needed and change what the buttons on top of the hoods do (paging back and forth Garmin pages). Everything works great. Thinking something drained the battery which caused the issue of di2 not working. Also, having these preferences on the iPhone app is nice but for peace of mind, if you can, do the connection through a computer (or tablet) with the Etub software.

@@VeloNippon The signal strength is great. I even wrapped the unit in bubble wrap so it's not banging against the down tube. Maybe .1 or .2 seconds delay using top buttons, nothing that's irritating. I only use buttons to page through Garmin pages.

The connection problem you had is pretty common. I concluded on the few times I've done it that it was due to the changing of the pin on first use. How it's implemented by Shimano is poor I think, but without any feedback from the device hard to do securely. I'd recommend not inserting in the bike on first install - do it inline with something like the rear mech so it's accessible; get the communications working (so pin change, delete pairing etc), then update and test before installing in the final location. The other option is to install inside the handlebar - upstream of the bar end interface. When you come to changing the wiring to remove that ugly junction box you should pass some heat shrink over the cable and rear brake hose to group the cables together on the left of the head tube. You can get a really clean look with a bit of patience. The other thing you can try is tagging the ends of each cable with a strip of coloured electrical tape - that'll let you determine which is the rear, front, battery etc when you're working in the confined areas like the bottom bracket.

Just so you know, upgrading the firmware of the EW-WU111 via bluetooth connection is not the only way to do it. If you have the actual SM-PCE1 and the E-tube software on your personal computer, you can upgrade the wireless firmware from your PC. I have done this myself on my own Di2 equipped bike. I have no experience with the combination charger / PC interface SM-BCR2, it is probably the limiting factor and why most people just repeat the statement that the EW-WU111 can only be updated wirelessly..

  • @ed6012
    @ed60125 жыл бұрын

Besides the EW-WU111, the internal seatpost battery (Di2 BT-DN1110) also has bluetooth functionality. Strangely, Shimano recommends not to update the firmware via bluetooth, but via the PC software with wired connection.

!!Easier way to "unbrick"!! (maybe) I recently installed the wireless unit and it failed while updating the software as per video. After looking online, it seems the problem causing the bike to "brick" is the app not being able to disconnect properly. And when the app is connected you can't use the gear shifting. To break the connection I uninstalled the app and removed the wireless unit from the phone bluetooth list. The shifting would then work. I reinstalled the app and went through the connection process again and everything worked the 2nd time 😀. Not sure why it falls the first time for most people though. Shimano should have solved problem by now.

Would love to see a review of that if it did. With bike manufacturers including power meters with their bikes it is going to be very interesting to see what that does to the market. I imagine it has to drive the price down which is only good for consumers.

@@gplama I purchased the exact same bike and now have about 500mi on it. I have Quarq DFour on my other bike and I haven't noticed any major difference in climbs that I make. There's an area near me with 30min+ climbs and will see how stable power readings when I ride there in a few months or sooner. I have to say this bike is the best damn value in the bike market now. For five grand you get a legit frame, legit wheelset, Di2, and disc brakes. I am planning to replace the handlebars since they are too wide (44 vs 42mm on my old bike) Funny they don't tell you that on the website. I replaced the stock tires with Spesh SW turbo cotton clinchers after I had sidewall cut in the rear wheel third ride. I was disappointed but understand it was just bad luck. Maybe I'll give tubeless another try (GP5ks) next time around. I have to say the way turbo cottons roll is incredible. Also not a big fan on the stock bartape but it's just a minor annoyance at this point. Btw I love your videos, I had ordered the D-fly unit and the cable last week and they probably arrived today. So this video will be super helpful while i'm putting it on. Keep up the good work!

My only frustration is that the Di2 battery level can only be viewed by accessing set up menu on Elemnent head unit itself (short press on power button) . For some reason Wahoo removed the ability to display on the main page like you can on the Garmin.
