    This possibly the best video I’ve seen explaining synchro shifting. I installed di2 a few months ago and since figured it out but when I looked at the time a lot of the videos were really old and explaining in a very round about way. Thanks Shane!

    Small tip on the accessibility front for the benefit of those of us in the Northern Hemisphere who are about to jump into winter riding with bulky gloves: Di2 lets you configure what each of the buttons do, so it's possible to set up a SRAM-style configuration where both right buttons are set to go down the cassette, and both left buttons are set to go up the cassette. Combine that with full-synchro and you'll never misshift in the winter. You can even program the hood buttons to change the front rings if you don't want to lose that option overall.

    Worth mentioning that the system also prevents you cross-chaining, even in S1, so you can’t accidentally try a silly ratio like big front and big rear at the same time. 👍

  • @wallacepei4529

    @wallacepei4529

    3 жыл бұрын

    The main benefit of di2 is that cross chaining is trimmed better to provide that perfect chainline even on cross chain. So I don’t understand how s2 mode really benefits other than being so lazy to bother with the front chainring shift and only think about rear cog shifting. For me I like manual, because if I were to switch chain rings from small to large, I want the larger gear ratio selected, not the same gear ratio

  • @thepatternforms859

    @thepatternforms859

    Жыл бұрын

    @@wallacepei4529cross chaining is still an issue and can destroy components and lead to less efficiency and power too. Synchronous system is perfect to prevent this. It also leads to less disruptions in cadence. If a hill is approaching you have plenty of time to shift to correct gear. I can’t think of any down sides to the synchronous system.

  • @sprice0609

    I’ve tried the same settings on SRAM red AXS. The “compensating mode” (semi synchro in Shimano speak) is great and I use it all the time. The sequential shifting (full synchro in Shimano speak) is absolute rubbish, particularly when out of the saddle and trying to put the power down on a short sharp hill.

    (and the MTB displays beep the shift before a synchro shift happens, which is pretty nice). Note that S1 and S2 are semi / full by default, but a user can change this.. and it's a lot easier to change this in the new mobile app - so there will be users where S1 is full synchro and S2 is semi-synchro.. or both S1 and S2 full synchro.. or any other combination :)

    Both of these modes are great for most of the time, but not all. Sometimes if im shifting into the little ring as i hit the bottom of the climb and the grade kicks up i only compensate with one shift instead of 2 like syncro. There are also wierd things like the certain gears that people shift into before lights to get a good start that might get a bit confusing with syncro

I love the idea of full synchro and it would mean you could free up more buttons to do other things (controlling lights, head unit, etc). Semi synchro is how I ride my mechanical bike so that’s also appealing. If I set the left and right Y buttons to shift up and down the cassette, could I configure the left and right X buttons to change screens on my Wahoo?

In the Android app (using Bluetooth) you can only specify a 2 cog shift. I'm not sure that the Bluetooth module is worth the expense (especially as I am a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt user).

    Yes s2 did not look appealing at all. The way I ride is in the big chain ring mostly. So I have it 53t on front. 11-28t on back, 11 speed. As controversial as this may be, I will run all 11 gears on back I don’t care about cross chain. I could see a super simple addition of a 12th gear. Say drop into 39t front to 28t back for some super steep hill. But I also don’t see the issue with just switching to that in manual mode.

    I used both S2 and S3 extensively, and finally just went back to S1 and left it there. My conclusion is that they would be great for a TT/Tri Race, or a flat hammer session, but if there are any climbs on my route, I don't want the bike making shifting decisions for me. And as for the 2 gear compensation in S1, some situations only call for a single gear compensation, and some might call for three (rare). S1 (M) is the best option for me...

    There are certain things in the cycling sphere that make no sense to me, as someone who has owned both compact and standard cranks - they are the same except compacts limit your ability to put out power on steep descents, otherwise your shifting choice determines level of effort so.... compact cranks are pointless. Shifting... if you can vary your cadence you can handle a wide range of gear choices....getting 20 gear choices is pointless. Crisp shifting helps, tiny incremental shifting.... nope. Cross chaining. I have one 3 chainring bike where cross chasing is an issue. On all my other bikes I can use any combination I want with no exception and no problems.
