Shimano Di2 Firmware Updates // Di2 E-Tube Programming via USB (Windows)
Спорт
Diving straight into the Di2 group-set and getting the most out of my new bike - Today I found out the Di2 Battery Charger is also a PC link and can be used to update firmware and re-program switches. Here's my run through of loading up the Shimano E-Tube software on Windows, updating my Di2 firmware, and configuring the A switches on the R8070 levers to change gears on the rear cassette. Thanks to Rides of Japan for his helpful videos on Di2 be sure to check out his channel too!

Thanks for confirming the use of the Shimano SM-BCR2 Battery Charger as a means of updating Di2 firmware. For some reason my laptop didn't want to play along, but I was able to upload the firmware and change settings from my desktop PC. Many thanks for clear and complete instructions.
This was terrific. I just got my Di-2 in October and this made it really easy to update my firmware and program my device. THANK YOU!
Gotta love it, that you JUST got a new bike and you are already creating awesome content of the tech used on the new bike. Really cool. Who would've thought 20 years ago, that one day we would be connecting our bikes to our PCs and updating the firmware on some of the components. Pretty crazy (and technically advanced) world we live in :)
Wow wow, you are the first and only Di2 video tutorial that actually helped me figure this programming thing out! I can't thank you enough!
Thanks for the excellent presentation on this one Shane! The screen capture on the side was a perfect inclusion.
Shane you legend!!! I'm an IT quarmby, however I've managed to activate the 'A' buttons on my Di2 thanks to your video. Cheers
Very nice video. I have a TCR on order and I didn't realise that it didn't come with the wireless module so that's very handy to know before I lay my hands on it. Looking forward to the next video with installation and configuration.
Thanks, got my first DI2 bike today and had no idea how to get the extra hood buttons working. Got it done with your video.
While I don’t have Di2...yet...I greatly appreciate the video Shane. I just used your video to setup the Kickr Climb (double tap to return to level and trainer difficulty/wheelbase adjustment) as the instructions were lacking. Keep up the great work!! Cheers and Happy New Year!
I switched from Ultegra DI2 STI to GRX DI2, that video made my day - IT WORKS - THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! - Same to Rides of Japan
Great video. I was unaware that one could use the battery charger adapter to connect to e-tube and thought I could only get firmware updates at my local bike shop. Too bad Shimano doesn't support Mac, but I borrowed my son's Windows laptop and used your instructions to successfully perform my first home based update. Thank you.
Thanks Shane...Just downloaded all the software and thought this was going to be an all day affair. Easy Peasy!
Great video Shane! I'm going to be updating my Di2 firmware via USB this morning and will install the Ewok this afternoon when it arrives. And then I'll program those buttons! Thank you!
Hi Shane, one little quirk using the PC connection, when all checks and updates are complete use the Disconnect Tab to disconnect the PC link to Di2, important step! I didn't do this the first time I connected by PC and I 'frooze' all components, couldn't re-connect, had to go to the shop to debug and re-install software/firmware. This doesn't happen with iPad...but I'm not an Apple fan...so , Disconnect the PC link then unplug the cable from the junction box... Happy New Year...great channel, love it up here in the northern hemisphere!
Looking forward to the Di2 series. Hav the same Di2 set on my Canyon, but not using any wireless module so far. So will definitely learn along the way. 👍
Hi mate..i just wanna thank you so much for making this video, this video help me a lot. I pray for you to have a good health and enjoy your ride. Tq very much from Malaysia..😊
What’s nice about the wireless unit when you get it is the ability to send your gear ratio data to your garmin head unit. It will show what gear you are in front and back and after the ride it shows how many gear changes you made, some useless info. It can also show your battery level on the Garmin which is cool as you charge it so seldom, its really nice to have. Also check out the auto and semi auto features that are programable from the e tube software. In semi auto when you change front chainring you can set rear gears up or down to get a better ratio. In auto you only use rear shifter and front will change automatically to keep the ratio. In e tube you can play with when it will shift the front mech. Just wish there was a bit more options there. Quite nice! These modes are also shown on Garmin and changed via the junction box. Enjoy. I love my Di2
Thanks Bro, you rock! followed it to the letter. Just got my new Specialized di2. I know more than the bike shop owner now. Pays to be a techie.
Am I the only dummy who didn’t even know I had those little buttons under the hoods?! Safe to say now thanks to this vid all my components firmware are up to date and I can now shift my rear cassette using those sneaky buttons! So thanks! Looking forward to hearing your opinion on the E-Tube wireless unit and whether it’ll be a worthwhile investment for me as well.
DI2 is great stuff and I have used it for over 3 years. Instead of the WU111, I have used the MT800 XT display. This does the same job as WU111 (wireless unit), but shows the gear your are in and also gives a bleep when it is going to change the front derailleur. This is an awesome addition if you are using the syncro gears. Having 3 ports, also makes the wiring a touch easier if you are using sprint shifters or climbing switch.
Awesome, thanks for the video, just received my Di2 bike so could use plenty of info to setup gear exactly like I want it.
Shane - the subtle search for USA lawyers was gold. It had me laughing
Nice Shane, always enjoy the little subtle things in ur vids mate. Favourite this time was the instinctive web search string, just caught yourself in time. Definitely curious to see what 'that' search would have coughed up. Early Di2 had a reputation in my group of issues on rare occasions for firmware updates so I've been wary about them (irrationally). But I'm keen to set up the A buttons so will try it. Cheers
Shane thank you so much. I have tried first via the iPhone app but couldn’t connect. Then I watch you and I have the batt charger and done accordingly. All my components needed an upgrade. I believe now after all these updating the iPhone app of e tube via the Bluetooth LE will be able to connect. Very useful
Fantastic again Shane. You're a bloody legend
For anyone interested in these numbers, I charted my Di2 battery decline curve over a two-month period with the following results starting with a fully charged battery (100%) and running it down to 20% (8363 total shifts; 976 miles; 55 hours riding time). The straight-line graphs for a fully discharged battery (0%) would have been close to 10,500 shifts (front and rear combined); 1200 miles; 70 hours riding time. Hours and miles are less relevant on battery drain than cumulative shifts since riding styles and terrain will impact shifting and saddle time. Data were collected on Garmin 820 head unit from 23 rides during a period of hot/warm weather (August & September) in southeast Texas (mostly flat) and riding with a group. Average ride: 42.4 miles; 363 shifts per ride (24 front & 340 rear). Bike: 2018 Canyon Ultimate 8.0 CF SLX Disc Di2 (new in June 2018) with Ultegra groupset.

Dan Denham thanks for the info. Obviously you must be using the Wu111 wireless module to collect that data. Someone said the wireless module eats up a lot of battery life (obviously as any radio needs power to operate and these things would be ON all the time. ) Did you notice this compared to a time when you didn’t have the module installed?
Well done! This worked and I'm psyched!
Thank you, I wanted to buy BT module first, but this is right what I need.

Hi Shane. Thanks for a no nonsense, comprehensive and well made video (a rare thing on KZread these days). Can't wait to play with my build (on order) #colnago
I found it very easy also. But you will love it even more once you start riding it.
Soo helpful, thanks mate!
Im not really into cycling, but I just find it pretty crazy the amount of tech in something I thought was pretty much tech-free. wow
Thanks mate! Just what I need 😎
I found myself compelled to update the firmware on my Shimano Di2 Wireless Unit (EW-WU111) due to significant battery drainage issues. It's quite surprising that Shimano continues to allow the sale of units that are essentially five years out of date, lacking crucial firmware updates right out of the box. With the firmware now updated, I'm cautiously optimistic that the problem has been resolved. However, it's ironic that a device designed to excel in wireless connectivity was, until now, performing poorly in its primary function. Kudos to Shimano for your customer excellence.
Good to see you work through this setup of Ultegra DI2 disc brake so i know what to do (or not to do) when I maybe get one. No macOS Software is 👎
Excellent. My Canyon Aeroad didn't come with the EW-WU-111 either. When I got it I put inside the frame by the bottom bracket. Apparently they can go anywhere in the system. I find the A buttons stiff to press so not really suitable for gear changing. Worth trying if you haven't done so already is Synchro shifting where you only use the RH shifter. The front derailleur shifts automatically.
Great vid! Thanks.
Laughing my socks off with the 'Di2 lawyers' youtube search 😂👊🏻
Have seen a couple of posts about the first update of firmware over wireless bricking people's systems. There is a definite bug in the set up in that, the first time you connect the EW-WU111 and connect to it over wireless, if there is a firmware update available it will automatically try to do it wirelessly and that invariably crashes and "bricks" the system. However, like most smart designers, there is a reset possible, you just have to disconnect all the components; shifters from the function box and derailleurs from the derailleur and then reconnect them and it will reset the system. The idea that a failed firmware update would actually destroy a battery is a bit daft as it is just a set of instructions in the device. Safest thing to do is to ensure the firmware is updated over the wire using the charger before installing the EW-WU111. Rode mine out for 100kmsa yesterday and am super happy with it. There is a bit of lag between changing gear and that change being updated to the head unit display on my Elemnt Bolt (about 1 1/2 to 2 secs) so am interested to hear if there is any lag once you set up the 8070 hood buttons as shifters if it has to go to the wireless module, be read and then command the derailleurs. Am super happy with it though! (edit, just watched the rest and see there is no lag between button press and derailleur move, nice!)
@rein2523
5 жыл бұрын
darryl roberts No, there is no lag when you use these as shifters. It’s just the delay in ANT+, the same as the delay of your power meter and HR strap to your headunit
Really great video, thank you.
Thanks - really helpful!
I had the buttons activating the shifters for a while but found I rarely used them given your fingers are right next to the actual shifters when you are on the hoods. I think you’ll go back to them changing computer screens. I like the pressing of the buttons on each side to automatically change from big ring to small ring (and cassette adjustment) when coming to a stop.
If one is looking for support from Shimano on Di2, they always ask you to connect the unit to the PC vs Bluetooth. You get more information from the PC software. Curious to see how much customization you can do with the A button on the Wahoo bolt. My right A button on my Garmin is setup to change screen, single tap forward and double tap backward. Left A button as a lap button, very handy for training, no need to take your hand off the handlebar to reach the button on the Garmin unit.
never knew I had those little buttons!
When you get the wireless part you'll see there is a tablet and phone version of the app. The tablet version has extra diagnostic functionality that lets you skip buying the fancier usb link adaptor
I built my DI2 bike from parts rather than going out and simply "buying" a ready built DI2 equipped bike. That was much more fun and educational.
Thanks a lot, helped me.
Thank dear, you are the best
Thank you so much for this video!!

Welcome to the Borg!
Very cool. I have the 9070 Di2 so I imagine I can activate the hood buttons as well. Unfortunately, I can't program them for my Garmin as I need the Ewok thingy as well as the latest generation e-tube battery. Both rather expensive options for minimal benefit.
hi can you set the x switch on the left shifter to shift rear derailleur like in sram's axs.
If you do try to use the ew-wu111 and the mobile app and have rendered your di2 unresponsive just disconnect the battery for max 30 sec(and possibly wu111), reconnect and use the charger to connect to pc and restore... Had to do that a couple of times.... /o\
Hi, can you do update on the new firmware update. Also, any idea how to troubleshoot the mobile app to Di2, it always says poor connection and therefore cannot update software. Thank you
Just a head up in regards to using the charger cable as a PC link and doing firmware, don't let the PC going into hibernation. I had this happen when I first got my bike with DI2 and it bricked the unit. I had to get the full program unit and re install the firmware on each component.

Could you tell me if you can shut the di2 off? What does it do when you continue clicking the button, when the LED turns red and stays on? And when you click the button again, the red and green LED turn on but go off afterwards. I just bought a di2 bike and im curious, but cant find it annywhere. Thx!
Just to clarify, does that mean you don’t need the D-Fly wireless unit to program the hood buttons and instead use the charger to connect to the Di2 system via a laptop?

Not to mention the fact that i don’t need to stare at my cassette trying to count in which gear i’m in. It displays on my elemnt ... simply amazing.
Hi great video, but I have a very specific question on Di2 battery level appearing on the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt. Does it appear as a separate field that you can configure to appear, like you can with phone battery?
@gplama
4 жыл бұрын
No. You can see % left when looking at the sensor detail in the menu, and you'll get an on-screen warning at 15% and 10% (I believe those are the numbers). Still no configurable battery level field though.
Have you enabled synchro shift yet? I didn’t think I’d like it. So for months I didn’t even try it. But once I did, it worked so incredibly well that I can’t imagine not having it now. (Synchro shift is basically an automatic front derailleur. You just shift with the right lever and as you shift into a harder gear, it’ll automatically go onto the big ring and back up two on the rear. So it’s the next available ratio, always the most efficient, never cross chaining.) Seriously. It’s brilliant. You can still manually control the FD if you don’t like what it’s doing. But I’d love to hear your thoughts on Synchro shift.
@hardboiledPhil
5 жыл бұрын
I love syncho shift. I have the big paddles left and right for up and down (like ETAP) but then I still have the small paddles for overriding front derailleur.
Hi Shane, I would like to get to hook up my di2 to a computer (which I don't have yet) . Can you display gear ration, count shift, create a graph for the gear ration with the Wahoo Bolt?
I wonder if we could connect those A Shifters to Zwift, so when you press the button, you use your power up, or perhaps press both to give wide spread Ride Ons.

Hi Shane, just a quick question, can I update di2 if I have the bar end junction box which is the we-as910,I'm led to believe I can but unsure for certain
I bought a Focus bike last year with di2. Did the same upgrade to add ant support, but found that when I installed it, it didn’t work. The di2 battery that came with the bike wasn’t compatible. The moral of this story. Check the compatibility charts to confirm your battery model will work with the wireless component.
the etube version 5 is not compatible with my R8050 brc2 already.. weird

Not a di2 user, but I did pick this tip up from browsing cycling forums: Charge the battery via a pc instead of straight from the wall. For whatever reason, sometimes, charging from the wall makes the system think it has charged fully, whereas in reality it has barely charged at all. I’ll see if I can find the source

A small downside of having the junction box in the handlebars (as opposed to under the stem with the older unit) is that you can’t use a bar end mounted mirror, since in Oz (and I suppose the UK and Japan), you want your mirror mounted on the right hand bar end.
