Thanks, i didn't know about the inspection cover - opened it up and voila, the end of an old cable was still in there. Took it out and now shifting up again :)

Thanks for creating your video and showing me how to remove that bottom cover to get more access to the ratchetting part. My cable end broke there and the ratchet system on the right shifter for the rear derailer jammed up on me. Of course it was in the highest gear so, I thought in the lever it was in the hardest gear. Once I pulled off the bottom coverof the shifter, I found my missing broken cable and it was the culprit why my shifter locked up on me. I appeciate you making the video for us! 🙂

I may not comment but always appreciate your vids. I've a few bikes with either r8000 and r8020 shifters and more than a few occasions this has occurred mainly to the left front mechanic shifter. Once or twice its been due to frayed cable but I've lost approx three shifters unable to shift up to the big ring and lock out and unable to rotate the lever, the bikes are kept clean and correctly lubed after each ride and the levers have been sprayed with light lubricant. I've been told it's a known design flaw, which unfortunately gets restrictively bad and irreparable just out of warranty time and have had to find £300plus for each replacement.

Thanks for this great video. It saved my day. Not sure what happened. The end of the cable just got loose and stuck, but it looked okay. So I just put it back, and it worked again. I need to replace the cable, but as a quick fix, it works for now.

Sometimes the cause is wear on the lever support - it means the up ratchet doesnt move out of the way of the pawl in time. You can check by putting something around a mm thick between the suport and the lever and trying to shif up. If it works then you can replace the lever support or add thickness to the old one by using e.g. a piece of thin plastic. I had a left dura ace lever do exactly this, fixed it with a dab of epoxy and a bit of black 1mm plastic sheet.

I had a similar situation with a stiff shifting front D and it was a cable housing that was to blame. The wires had shifted and it was no longer a clean cut at the end. After replacing with new housing it was much better instantly. The problem can really only be friction in the cables or something really wrong with the cable attachment point, to the point where the lever arm would be much shorter than it should be.

Hi, your videos on 105 have been superb but I have run into a problem: the recess part into which the cable end goes in the hood has dropped a few mm into the shifter body. When I put a new cable in and pull it tight, the head of the cable snags and won't shift (LHS/front derailleur. Any way I can re-rotate the part into which the cable head sits so the cable head fits where it should? Many thanks.

My shifter works when I take that cover off but once it's back on it doesn't shift. Edit: Nevermind, a generous dose of WD40 and spraying with grease helped.

Nice vid! At 8:18, for your left shifter, when you thread the cable in, there is this metallic cable catcher. Is there a same cable catcher on the Right Shifter too? I realise my Right Shifter is missing this component and been experiencing the same issue you mentioned about no gear engagement.. thx!

I have both, and the Di2 is far more hassle free, but if it breaks, wow it's expensive, especially if it's a Di2 hydraulic lever.
