Shifting a Dog Box Transmission Like a Daily Driver

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I’ve learned a lot shifting this H Pattern Dog Box over the years. Just did a quick compilation of "How to Shift" Up/Down and even Reverse without it grinding or clunking badly. First time trying this voiceover feature. 🤣

    Not bad.Truckers and bike riders have been shifting without the clutch for 60 or 70 years if not longer. Generally clutch only used for taking off and coming to a stop. Truckers call it floating the gears,and I’ve heard of them getting 700,000 or more l miles out of one clutch. Although most of if not all were straight cut dogbox or crashbox.

    @@alltrac101 amazing build.... although I believe keeping the first gear with synchro because you never need to quickly shift into first and also very convenient in a daily. Dog gears on 2nd 3rd and 4th because this is where you need the banging 99% of the time and 5th/6th keep with synchros that way when you are cruising you can be very comfortable and most of the time you can go 1st...2nd... 5th directly for cruising speed for a daily it would be 100% more convenient for you and for the track you would keep banging 2nd 3rd and 4th

    🙏 Thanks. Appreciate you watching and commenting. I understand what you are saying but it would complicate manufacturing. 1-2 is on the same collar, so the 1st gear side would need to accommodate the synchro assembly which also means 1st gear would probably be thinner. Depending on the ratio and race a non synchro 5th is still necessary to flat shift. A helical cut dog box is a thing as well.

    nice video and good explanation, I need your advice I want to build a dog box honda transmission with Helical Cut Gears for daily drive and I spin more than a month reading about the dog engagement and how it's work but no one give a clear answer if I can daily drive with current use. because some guys said it will not last long , a lot of maintenance and you will spend $$$ so I want to know -how long does it last if I use it in a good way ( like your shift in the video ) like for example your car how many months you use the dog box -How many times in the year do I need to do maintenance -can you skip shift in the dog engagement ? ( like if you are Cruising at the street in 2 gear can you jump to 4 gear ? ) same with downshift if I'm it 5 gear and I want to slow down I need to go 4-3-2-1 or I can just go from 5 gear to 2 gear I wish you help me with that. you will save me really and I'm sorry the long Questions thanks :D

    Hey No Problem. You can drive a dog engagement manual transmission for years as outlined in my vid. Race shifting/Flat shifting is what they are intended to do and that’s what causes the most wear/damage. It doesn’t require much maintenance others than an oil change but the harder you drive it the more worn it will get and more maintenance. Ie take it apart and replace the worn pieces You will know the engagement (dog) teeth are worn when it won’t flat shift properly and/or pop out of gear. The gear teeth itself usually hold up unless you overpower them. Yes. With a H pattern you can select what ever gear you want, 1 to 3, 3 to 5. Going up….5 to 3 going down Etc…Just rev match down shifting Thanks for watching

    They're called "spur" gears. They're not "straight cut", they're involute cut. If the gear faces were straight, they'd wear each other down to nothing in no time flat.

    your remark at 42 seconds is actually incorrect, the helical gearset is in fact stronger than a straight cut, the difference is weight and axial loads with helical causing some drag on the rotating mass of the gearset.

  • @eddiedonald9571
    @eddiedonald95712 жыл бұрын

    When you let off the throttle, do the teeth jump to the next ones over in the opposite rotational direction due to engine braking? If so, is that what causes the clunkyness at low speeds (on/off throttle) because I had always thought that was the tuning of the race engines at low rpm (like in pit lanes).

  • @alltrac101

    @alltrac101

    2 жыл бұрын

    The teeth just changed sides of contact No don’t have that issue engine braking even a low speed low gear off/on partial throttle. If you can log the event. Could it be a bucking issue engine wise? Lean/rich condition

    Not necessary, the clutch is use to take the load off the gear in order to change. Going up in shifting clutching or just letting off the accelerator is fine. I usually clutch and blip on the down shift to prevent wear
