Sheryl Crow on how AI is crushing the spirit of music and her new album Evolution

Ойын-сауық

Sheryl Crow has sold over 50 million albums, won nine Grammy Awards, and inspired countless songwriters and artists to follow in her footsteps. Now, over 30 years into her career, she’s releasing her 11th studio album, “Evolution.” Sheryl joins Tom to talk about how concerns around artificial intelligence inspired the title track on this album, why she uses her music to speak out, and what advice she gave to Olivia Rodrigo when they performed together at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

    I think Sheryl is on to something here. I am a nobody and just released a song of my own entitled "Organic Intelligence", which is a celebration of natural intelligence. May that never be replaced by something artificial. One of the lyrics is "...Prince, Cobain, Lennon, Hendrix, worth more than some high tech trick." Great interview and thank you for posting this.

    The part of the AI equation not addressed in this conversation is that pop music has for years - even *before* AI - been homogenized and formulated to be as innocuous, soullless, and generic as possible, in the name of mass appeal to the lowest common denominator. Put another way: we didn't need AI to make music suck; we've been doing a great job of that all by ourselves.

    In truth, when the record companies caved into all of Apple's demands - especially selling all songs on their site for .99 cents, the value of music collapsed - never to recover. Now, most singers/bands MUST tour to pay their bills and make a living. Releasing music only isn't going to pay the bills.

    Well what were the options?…Napster opened the door and an avalanche of other file sharing services knocked it down. That was pretty much the apocalypse for the whole industry…until Steve Jobs pretty much saved the segment with his idea….

  • @jefftaylor844

    @jefftaylor844

    @zeroceiling ... 1. Had the record companies sued a number of pirates into the stone age, a message would have been sent that IF you're caught stealing music - especially on a larger scale, you'll be be fined/jailed. 2. Steve Jobs blackmailed the recording industry when he said to them that if they didn't license all their music to Apple and take the cut he was demanding, he suggested that the music industry would be fatality wounded. They should have called his bluff and took him to court over the iPod, etc. Ironically, over the years, artists have complained about the control that the companies had over them but when push came to shove, the Industry rolled over and allowed Apple to destroy an artist's main way to make a living.

    Spotify is now the main one, which is 0.003 cent to 0.005 cent per stream. Records have had a come back is one way of making more $, there are also other avenues like youtube etc. which can also do ok. So it's just changed and is more diverse.

    Go Sheryl! Sheryl has a 100% correct perspective. All music and other art forms need to be placed in a space and category which is NON-Ai AFFECTED, Music and art are a combination of spiritual and physical creative processes - they are not self-generated by a device. Songwriters, musicians, singers actors, voice-actors and backing vocalists should all be VERY concerned and stand up to protect their craft and their futures.

    Sheryl is highlighting an issue which almost all musicians and songwriters are concerned about. In my youth we would go out on a Saturday night and go to the local pub/bar where the best Australian bands would be playing. Today it would be hard to find any live band playing anywhere. Furthermore, our music festivals are being cancelled at an alarming rate. What future is there for a young person interested in being a musician?

One of the biggest things for me, mostly the lyrics, is that someone else (another HUMAN) somewhere, was feeling the exact same thing I was, and made it through, or wrote the song, or ... something. So Steve Coleman was experimenting with writing programs to imitate how he himself improvised jazz in the 90s. He played an example for legendary bassist composer David Holland. His reaction was, stop! He said don't share this don't pursue this. Because he found it both scary and chilling.

    How can anybody believe every mainstream, hyper-corporate media talking point about social issues and be worried about AI without imploding from the force of the contradiction? If you're worried about the music industry and/or state of the arts NOW, I have to say to the mainstream people who apparently are only being affected by things NOW, "welcome to the music industry." Music consumers got the culture they paid for. I tell them all, "if you're down with the freeload, enjoy the free download." And make an album if you want to make an album. Who cares what a bunch of social-engineering projects think? Anyway, I feel like I'm watching the final credits of a movie that ended almost 20 years ago (Napster). I took the hint a long time ago. 15 years of living in cars and vans was my limit. I wish you luck, but you're not going to "change anything" with no understanding of the real world. And nobody who cares about mainstream corporate talking points in 2024 is grounded in reality. It's like watching a bunch of rich kids be surprised their credit card didn't work at the trendy shop. I took the hint a long time ago, and never expect to sing for the social engineering projects again. You never know, but it would be an event. As they say in Spanish, "To God,"

    I love SC But it’s challenging to watch her talk about the dangers of AI, while looking at her through an AR/AI filter

    My advice to others about heckling and death threats.. Nobody has the will power to carry any of that out.. Not even a psychopath will pursue you unless, they have nothing else more suitable to do.. And unless you have money and are vulnerable, you won’t come across any that will kill you. Its the fear that rules you, and your capacity to reason while posessing a fear is not a reality.. You must address the fear, and that is to determine who youa re, to what lengths you will go, and your pain threshold, and where you place your faith.. If you fear AI, why not learn about it and see if it is a relevant fear? Why is it a fear.. Why should you let it have control over you and your life?

    Disgusted with Hollywood's metal and punk I was leaving , looked up Sheryl Crow was releasing her first video. Years later she's expressing how I felt then... I straight say "God puts the song in your heart"! But Artificial Intelligence doesn't have a heart !!

    AI was an integral part of the cookies opt in of a certain company and by consenting you were agreeing to the use of ur likeness, mannerisms, voice and choices for public use and therefore you were giving away ur own face, voice and behaviour for public use which is terrifying and AI needs a legislative framework
