    They can't. The whole concept of casinos would fall apart if that happened. People who could game the system would win all the money and put them out of business. For example, the casino needs to be able to make money from the roulette game, and they do make money if people are playing completely randomly (because of the number 0). If everybody did what Sheldon did it's possible they would lose money (despite the number 0) and have to shut down.

    The thing is what Sheldon supposevly did is impossible. You can't predict a Roulette Wheel, it just doesn't work. Card Counting used to be a working strategy, but Casinos largely fixed that already the easy way for them, they use 5 decks instead of the previously used 2. And they mix way more often (dunno how often), but basically they took care that despite card counting you still can't shift the odds in your favor.

    OK, for those that know a little about gambling.... 1 - The casino won't kick you out for tracking numbers on a roulette wheel. Most actually have a board with the last 20 numbers, and some have sheets for you to use if you like. 2 - The only way his theory was correct, was if the wheel was somehow unbalanced. Wheels are checked on a regular basis for balance. 3 - The casino wouldn't kick him out before making a bet. They wouldn't make the assumption that his plan would be successful before it went into practice. 4 - Aside from counting cards at Blackjack, gambling systems don't work.

    @@Smasher0404 You're not wrong, but it doesn't matter here. There's no indication here of exactly how long he was tracking this, but the character does say "hours". Jagger tracked 6 wheels over 5 weeks to prove a bias. There just aren't enough trials here to make this valid. In reality, that wheel would be checked for balance way before any bias could be accurately proved. That's why they check them as much as they do. Not to mention that if a certain area of the wheel is hit with a great regularity in even so short of a time as an hour, security would be notified and the game would be shut down.

  • @Smasher0404

    @Smasher0404

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@daveamsbaugh2990 It really depends on the confidence level both Sheldon and the Casino were using for their Chi Square Test. Jagger was fairly meticulous, and thus would have a very high confidence level (probability-speaking) that the wheel was in fact biased. My guess (having not seen the episode), is that the Casino was also obviously monitoring the wheel, and when the pit boss was approaching Sheldon because he was already on his way to order the wheel to be replaced. That's probably why they would also be willing to make the assumption his plan would be successful. They were also monitoring the wheel, and know that it was unbalanced (which a Chi Square test would also reveal.) Honestly, the biggest problem though with Sheldon's strategy was that he was consolidating his bets to a string of "a few large bets". Beyond making it obvious that the wheel is biased, it would have also put him at higher risk of losing all his money (since a small string of bad luck would wipe out more money, that a series of small bets could recover from on average).

    @@jietroraximoff2805 Not necessarily, most people that do something like this believe they have a system, like they think a specific number hasn't landed after a certain number of spins then it's due to come in. There are plenty of casinos that give players notepads specifically to track wheel numbers, cause they know more often than not if someone has come up with a system that it's a losing system that just had a temporary hot streak and they will lose. The overwhelming majority of system players lose more than people that just place bets for fun, so the casinos are quite happy to just let them sit there with their notepads and think they've figured something out. However, Sheldon had identified that the wheel has a bias and using this information goes against house rules.

    Nope. It's not the difference between intelligence and wisdom, it's rather the difference between academic/book intelligence and emotional/social intelligence. That is what the whole show is about: it's the story focused on Sheldon, and Sheldon being the unusual human, the modern Rain Man. A child genius who grew up to be an adult genius when it comes to high, academic knowledge but socially and emotionally disabled. Just like this scene, he is a genius enough to use his high IQ and math knowledge to beat the system at the casino, but he is socially oblivious to the fact that you don't tell this to the casino security. Sheldon is still like a child savant: genius, but totally naive and innocent in many aspects, exactly like children. That's the essence of the show and the main source of the comedy on the show. The Big Bang Theory is, essentially, the new version of Rain Man.

Sheldon has said in season 5, don't remember now which episode exactly, that he has more than one bank account and has savings in cash, hidden in different places in his apartment. In that episode, he showed it to Penny when he lent her money in cash. So he is clearly talking about just one bank account here, the account for science/passion projects. He has the other account, so he can maintain his lifestyle, and again, he has savings in cash, in his apartment. Did you really think that a genius like Sheldon can't handle his money and plan his budget? Sheldon may be oblivious to social norms and some real-life challenges, but when it comes to money, he knows his stuff, and he is too organized to not have enough money. He just wouldn't spend the money he has to make a living, on some science project, and it's smart of him that he prefers to sell his collectibles and use the other account to fund his passion projects.

    You don't have to go to a casino. If you go to a casino you don't have to drink. If you go to a casino you don't have to make stupid bets, there are smart ones that have the odds very close to even. You can also make bets of basically any size you want, most casinos I've been to have a $5 minimum bet table, or the slots that go even lower. But they're also a business and they'd prefer it if you were drunk because you make stupid bets. Just like amazon would prefer if you shop drunk as you're more likely to make more purchases. But if you count cards you tip the odds out of their favor and into your favor, so they stop making a profit, and as a business they are trying to make money, and they don't have to allow someone who is going to hurt their profit. That's just capitalism. Plus in terms of gambling the Casino's offer far better odds than something like the government sponsored lottery that has an expected return of like 50 cents on the dollar, where the casino usually bottoms out at around 80 cents.

    They're a business behaving like every other business does. I don't understand the condemnation. They sell various products at their gaming tables. A blackjack table is no longer profitable for them if you cheat at the game and count cards. It's not illegal but it kills their profit. So they don't allow that. What other business would continue selling a product they were just losing money on? I'm all for reigning in crazy capitalism run amok screwing people, but this makes it so they can't make a profit on the game. That seems like a pretty reasonable move for them to make.

    As a roulette dealer, I know that most roulette wheels are recalibrated every few months. But I know of 2 casinos where I don't believe they have ever been professionally balanced since opening. These wheels can give a player a slight edge over the casino. But even a slightly unbalanced wheel doesn't guarantee a win... just makes it more likely. Also, dealers are supposed to vary how hard they spin the ball. Most do, but some do not.

    Chi-square is, in fact, what you use to determine if a roulette wheel is biased or not. However, you wouldn't acquire enough data points in just a couple of hours of recording spins. You need about 50,000 spins to have a 98.3% certainty (1 Stdev) of true bias, and not simply random variance. You also need to adhere to proper bankroll management (the Kelly Criterion) to avoid going bust. Even with a true positive EV, you could still easily go bust in the short term if your bets are too large in relation to your overall bankroll.

    Yeah there are the wheel could be seriously broken. But it would have to be a pretty major flaw. The casino's would actually prefer if you kept track of all the craps rolls, or all the roulette spins because then you bet sub-optimally thinking something is "due" or something is more likely to come up. When in reality random means there are groupings where double 1's are thrown out back to back, or a black 7 comes up two or even three times in a row. Doesn't mean it's any more likely to come up the 4th time.

    Yes but the ball is still subject to wear and tear and by observing how the ball bounces from spin to spin, you can make an educated guess where it will land next, that's why the ball gets swapped out , much like how the dice get swapped out in craps and cards get swapped out in the card games,

  • @tadious9415

    The amount of wear and tear the ball has in the hour before they swap it out is equivalent to 0 for practical purposes.

    Real casinos would’ve gladly taken Sheldon’s money on a game like roulette. It’s not advantaged play to know all of the previous rolls, and you can quite literally write them down and do an analysis like this if you want, because it won’t change the fact that you still only have a 1-38 chance of getting an exact number correct. The only time casinos eject players for advantaged play is in games like black jack, which does allow you to tip the odds in your favor by using math or card counting. Obviously tampering with machines or dice or anything of that nature is not advantaged play, but cheating, and will result in jail time.
