Sheep Farming: Feeding Sheep & Lambs - Keep It Simple!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Today at Ewetopia Farms, we focus on feeding sheep and lambs. It doesn't have to be difficult or complicated. We believe in keeping feeding, as all parts of farming, simple. We first show you how and what we feed our lambs in their creep feed. Next we talk about feeding hay to lambs. As we move to the next barn, we discuss feeding hay to adult sheep. We show you what we feed and how we do it. We even time how long it takes to feed hay to a barn of one hundred sheep. But we don't stop at talking about feeding. We also talk about cast sheep and high capacity sheep and what we want our sheep to look like. And of course, you will get to see lots of lambs. Sit back and enjoy! Please hit the like button if you had a good experience virtually on our farm!
Sheep and sheep farming is our passion and we hope that the love we have for what we do is obvious to you the viewers. Our operation is a large scale, registered Suffolk and Poll Dorset sheep farm combining the best of pasture and confinement to manage the flock for maximum comfort, minimal stress, and producing a consistent, very high quality product. Our focus is on providing breeding stock for sale to other sheep producers. All our sheep are treated with the utmost compassion which I think will become evident as you join us on our daily rounds on our working sheep farm in eastern Ontario, Canada.
I hope you enjoy this video. If you would like to follow along with us and experience life on a real live sheep farm on a daily basis, please subscribe do that you don't miss a single episode! It doesn't cost anything to do so and you can cancel at any time. I think some people think that subscribing costs or locks you into something. All it does is notify you when I post a new video. I felt it may be helpful to clarify that because from talking with people in person, I don't think a lot of people realize that about pushing the subscribe button. Thank you for taking the time to watch! We love to hear from you so be sure to leave a comment as well.
Thank you!

    Good morning Arnie and Lynn. A great video. I feel like I learn something new with each one. Seeing those lambs grow is amazing. They all have their own personalities. Arnie is quite humorous and I enjoy his stories. He makes for laughs in the day and that is good for the soul. The pregnant ladies are starting to look heavy with lambs. New life getting ready to make an entrance. Hope your day is a good one. Have some laughs and stay dry. Big hugs. 🥰🥰🥰

    I was looking at the winners of the Irish Suffolk National vs Suffolks that win awards in the US. The difference is almost comical. US “Suffolks” look like gazelles with the sloping back and spindly legs, skinny neck and tiny head. And NO tails. And then the British brutes, half the leg length and double the thickness and wide like a table. I’m now very jaded. I like yours, right in the middle. Geronimo all the way. 🥰

    🤣🤣🤣 Geronimo is a handsome boy for sure! But we do have breeders from all over the world on here and what people look for in their sheep varies as much as the people. I, of course, prefer Canadian Suffolks but we wouldn't have them if it weren't for both the British and American contributions!😊

    I agree with your thoughts on the lamb feeders. Taking out every other bar might just be too much of a gap making the feeders unsafe, especially when the lambs are smaller and just starting at the feeders. I also agree with you on mixing your own feed on the farm, to send your product off the farm and bring someone else's feed back happens too often. The same goes for processing meat for the freezer. In this case you really need to work with a processor that you can trust. Thanks for another great video and stay safe!!

  • @EwetopiaFarms

    Do you ever find the runts catchup and surpass their peers as an adult? I like also your way of feeding because it reduces the exhaust in the barn everyday…for you and the sheep-especially in the winter when the curtains and doors could be closed.

  • @EwetopiaFarms

    @EwetopiaFarms

    The runs don't surpass the big ones but given proper care, they can catch up and do really well as long as they have good conformation. I have lots of misfits I have held back such as Peanut who went on to be a beautiful ewe with a humdinger lamb. It depends on what caused the runtiness. Those little ones in our barn right now are built perfect so I am thinking that given extra time, they will eventually catch up.

    Does Casting cause issues with unborn lambs? I would think so, if it affects digestion and their ability to breathe properly, ie, bloat etc

    No, barley is small enough but we do crack the corn for the lambs. It all goes through our grinder/mixer so some barley could get cracked but most just goes through the screen

    Please go to our playlists on our channel and look under feeding sheep. We have so many videos explaining our feeding process, grains used, and why. But we use a grinder/mixer to make our creep feed. Our ewe ration is just 50% corn and 50% barley.
