Most abscesses are cause by wounds. Punctures from feed (sharp edges of hay or straw in the mouth), thorns, barbs, other animals, etc… CL is due to a bacteria in the lymph system that sometimes does and sometimes doesn’t present itself as an abscess. Doing your best to keep wounds clean can go a long way to prevent abscesses. Unfortunately, this can be difficult due to hair and wool.

Hello, Gerald and happy New Year to you as well. This is very difficult to do yourself without some sort of handling equipment. We have a squeeze chute I would use if no one was around to help me out.

Great demonstration, thank you for sharing. You mentioned this abcess is from an injury. How long did it take for the abcess to get that big? I'm just wondering if it's something that could go unnoticed for a while if the injury was not witnessed.

They can get rather large in a short period of time depending on the cause. With a large thorn or cut, possibly a week or two. With trauma causing a bleed in the muscle, sometimes a matter of days.

Can you use the staples for a holding in a prolapse?

Hi! I have a ewe that had triplets a week ago. They are doing fine and nursing fine until today I noticed they are all trying to nurse only from the right side of the udder. The left side is full of milk, I milked some out of her and it looks fine. Could this be mastitis and they lambs don't want to drink it? I haven't even seen them TRY to drink from the left side, only the right. Not sure what to now

Hello, JL. Sometimes we find the babies really start to go after one side instead of the other. We see this a lot in dairy goats when one side gets too big and it’s difficult to nurse on. This can be a tough habit to break with newborns because they seem to get in the habit of picking a side. In this case, we will usually try to milk the mom down so she has the same bag size on both sides and then try to “reintroduce” the babies to the lesser used side in an effort to get them to nurse. Keep us posted on your situation.

@@LinessaFarms thanks for your help, glad it wasn't anything too serious! I tried milking her but unfortunately it did not go well haha so after observing for a couple more days the lambs thankfully seem to be drinking from the left side again although still preferring the right

Do you keep them separated from the rest of the flock for a day or two or it’s okay to put them back into the flock?

Hello, Jami. She is one of the leaders in the ewe group and I don’t have any concerns this is a CL abscess. She walks fine with no issues and is not acting sick at all. With that being said, I will keep her with her friends. If there was any concern, I would most definitely pull her as you mentioned. Hope you have a great New Year and best wishes to you and your family.

Man, I really need your help... I have a couple of boys[goats], they first broke one boys leg and today I tell you, the whole leg got removed, I can't tell you how, but he's 3 legged as I go to bed. Is there any advice you could give me... I'm leaning towards laying him down, bcoz I don't have a vet close to me. 💔

Clean bandage changes, anti inflammatory medications, antibiotics, and rest. That’s about all you can do. Sorry this is happening! 😞

I have a two week old lamb.. she was doing fine.. name vanilla bean.. and I think she got stepped on... Her left front side.. like the elbow part.. it swelled and she was limping at first but can't really move it now... Nothing is broken but it has a bit bump.. and I feel it's dragging her down.. her mom still feeds her.. and she pushes herself to still drink milk... What do you think it is.. that bump got large like the size of a half a dollar coin... It looks more like a bump on top close to the skin now...
