    I am a new hobby breeder. This is my second year getting lambs. Year 1 was fascinating, because I was wanting to get ram lambs, and all the people in the forums were having ram lambs a-plenty, but my ten (American Jacob) lambs were 80% ewe lambs. I wanted to raise rams for breeding purposes. I got one gorgeous ram who is now a herd sire, and I got one gargoyle with 8 horns. He didn't live to see six months. I had a wether that came as companion to my original ram (who I traded for a young new blood ram).... the wether was castrated by a veterinarian at 4 months of age, and he was an indoor bottle baby for the first three months of his life. This spring, the wether went from being one of my most loving animals to a freaking demon. He tried to kill me, and since he had four horns, and four months of horn development before being castrated, and his horns were 24 inches long, it was touch and go who would win. (He ended up being sent to freezer camp and is quite tasty). But since I have only a small herd, I do need a new companion wether. Last year I had 100% of my ewes that lambed, and 100% survived. This year, I had my 2nd ewe who gave birth, a 2nd timer, and she rejected her ewe lamb. I found the lamb a bottle baby home, and the ram lamb developed what seemed to be OCD and had to be put down. (So now I'm paranoid!). Finally my third ewe lambed out twins (a first timer) and the baby boy is not looking like stud material, and since I want a wether to keep, I am thinking of wethering him. But when I put a band on his tail (didn't know I could castrate him at the same time) he was screaming in agony over the tail band. I ended up removing the band. I had one lamb last year who acted exactly the same (his dam's twin sister, now that I think about it).... and I don't care if he's docked or not for his tail. But I'm worried about castrating him. He'll be a week old tomorrow night. His coloring isn't good to register him, and one of his legs is quite crooked and duck-footed, and he's lop-eared. I worry that he might also end up with OCD (A Jacob trait) and never heard of lop-eared lambs (like a lop-eared bunny).... but just wondering if you had any ideas about the castrating. I know I'm a total softie, and if I had left him to just deal with the tail band, he'd have gotten over it. (None of the other lambs have seemed to even noticed the tail band other than a couple flicks of the tail).... but wondering if I should literally go down to the barn on Monday morning, just before going to work, and band him and then leave for work. He might cry and carry on all day, but when I get back 8 hours later, he should be over the worst of it. Sorry, I was never good at short comments.

    I think banding everything at one time is the best option. I hate to set them back with one issue only to set them back again later. There are mixed reviews on this subject and some goat folks in particular will advise castrating later. The problem I will have with most young lambs is getting both the nuts in the band if they are not very developed. I give a 1ml shot of penicillin and 1ml shot of CDT with each docking (assuming I don’t do them together). Tail banding is always best done as early as possible. They will have far less pain and tolerate it better as the soft cartilage of the tail has not yet ossified. Ideally, you can do this in the first day or two of life. Thank you for your comment and support. We look forward to hearing from you again in the future.

    I have a California bander, is there a size thing I should worry about? Also have you 'banded' horns on goats, or can shed light on that practice when it comes to having an adult goat with horns?

  • @LinessaFarms

    @LinessaFarms

    Жыл бұрын

    There isn’t necessarily a size you should worry about. The California bander allows more forgiveness whereas a traditional bander will limit you in the size of the testicles you can effectively fit over. Technically a ram or buck could be castrated at any age but there are a lot of considerations if you do this too early or too late. We think 6-8 weeks of age is a good time for goats. We try to castrate as early as possible for rams. Regarding horns, I have never banded horns and cannot offer you much information. 🫤

    I would consider giving them tetanus antitoxin, if you have not already administered their CDT vaccine. Tetanus antitoxin will help to provide some protection from the banding until they are vaccinated against tetanus through their CDT vaccine. CDT vaccine takes time to work, so you would not be able to administer it and expect any protection for a while (possibly months depending on where they are at in the vaccine cycle). Do not administer tetanus antitoxin at the same time as your CDT vaccine as it will at best offset the benefits of the vaccine and at worst, cause a possible allergic reaction.

    You’re pushing it but if you do it immediately, you should still be ok. Be sure to give them a shot of penicillin and cdt when you dock. Mix 1ml of penicillin and 1 ml of cdt. Inject subcutaneously.

    You bring up a good point I did not consider. Unless you have a large enough operation that you can control and segregate a large number of males, you will more than likely have no choice but to castrate.

  • @LinessaFarms

    That’s a trick question. Banding should be done early in life and they are usually not able to breed (generally speaking) until they have reached 6 months of age or older. If you have a male at least this old, you should contact a vet for surgical castration options. Banding would not be appropriate at this age.

    Yes. This is referred to as cryptorchidism and is where one or both of the testicles do not drop. This will usually correct itself by 2 months of age. If you are seeing this, you just have to wait it out.

    @@LinessaFarms Or do you think that it might be a better idea to use the artificially insemination method instead of castrating? Do you have any info about electroejaculation (EE)? How do you extract the seminal fluid? I have read you just squeeze them and it sort of pops out. I think I can figure that part out because I do have a decent amount of experience in that area. My problem is how do I artificially inseminate the queen?
