By injecting the penicillin into the vaccine bottle you have changed the concentration of the original vaccine. Isn’t it necessary to now adjust the volume given? Or is that not of concern that the proper volume was given?

You are on the right track. We need to hit the books to figure out what is acceptable and what is not. When adding a dilution to a medication we don’t want to drop to a number less than .90 So what in the world am I talking about? Take the initial amount of solution (in this case 50) and divide by the final amount of solution (in this case 55). This number should be greater that .90 If the number drops below .90 this falls outside of the acceptable range. Hope that helps. 50/55= 0.909 (acceptable dilution) 50/60= 0.833 (not acceptable)

Lambs and Kids will get their initial vaccine at 6 weeks of life and a second dose about 21-28 days later. Moms will get an annual booster at least 3 weeks prior to lambing or kidding. The booster helps the mom to increase production of their existing antibodies which are transferred across the placenta and expended through their colostrum. We give a 2ml shot at birth which consists of 1ml penicillin and 1ml CDT to help prevent naval ill per Pipestone Veterinary Guide to sheep and goats (Dr. Kennedy). This isn’t something everyone does, however we feel it is the best prevention against naval ill. Thanks for watching!

2 injections are needed in order to give immunity. Most manufacturers state to give these 4 weeks apart. After initial immunity, you can give CDT about 1 month to 2 weeks prior to kidding to help provide immunity to the offspring through colostrum and placental transfer.

Hello. Lambs and goat kids should receive their first vaccination at 6 weeks followed by a booster 21-28 days later. This is their initial vaccine. Pregnant ewes and does should receive and annual booster in the last month of pregnancy. All of these shots are generally given as a 2ml, subcutaneous injection. This is standard but you should refer to the directions on the vaccine bottle you are using.

I noticed you draw right through the metal on the top of the bottle. I always thought you remove the little tab on top of the metal seal?

We remove the small metal circle on the top of the bottle. It may have just been the camera angle that made it look like we didn’t.

Unfortunately, I do not know where you would be able to get this vaccine in your area.

Since you added 5 ml of PCN, that diluted the vaccine. Doesn't that change the amount of "vaccine/pcn combo" you are administering?

If you do the math, you’ll see the amount. It’s very small. But, yes. It will of course dilute it slightly.

Penicillin is unavailable in my area. Is Duramycin acceptable?

No. The reason we use penicillin is because it is suspended in water. If you were to use Duramycin, the alcohols in the suspension will more than likely damage the vaccine. Sorry.

Despite our best efforts we have doe with a granuloma post cd&t. Is there a way to get rid of it ?

Some animals will get a granuloma due to a robust immune response. Generally speaking, if it were due to poor technique or an issue with the medication, you would see more than one animal with this issue. Simple granulomas can and usually do start to go down with time, although it isn't uncommon to have a small bump at the injection site for a very long time. There is nothing you can do for this, unfortunately. For individuals that show livestock, the best prevention you can do is to make sure to give the injection (we say any injection) on the non-show side of the animal.

How long does this mixture take to go bad considering a proper storage

It is slightly diluted but such a small amount, the effectiveness should not be an issue.

At what age do you give this vaccine? We have heard different things. Some say give it at 2 weeks and then again at 6 weeks. Some say give it to pregnant sheep and goats one month before the expected due date. What are your thoughts?

This is a really good question. Assuming the mother has adequate antibodies from her vaccine, we would like to to wait until 6 weeks of age and then give a second booster 21 days later. Waiting until lambs and goat kids are at least 6 weeks of age before giving vaccines allows their immune systems to mature sufficiently. Young animals, including lambs and goat kids, are born with some immunity from their mothers, which comes from the colostrum, the first milk produced after birth. This passive immunity helps protect them in their early weeks of life. However, this passive immunity can interfere with the effectiveness of vaccines. If vaccines are administered too early, the antibodies from the colostrum might neutralize the vaccine, making it less effective. By waiting until the animals are around 6 weeks old, their passive immunity starts to wane, and their own immune systems become more active and responsive. This allows the vaccines to stimulate a stronger and more effective antibody response, providing better protection against diseases. So far as the mothers are concerned, you want to give the shot at least 2-3 weeks prior to lambing or kidding. The booster does what it sounds like, boosting the existing antibodies in the body and allowing placental transfer and transfer through colostrum. If you wait until less than 2 weeks from birth, the effects may not be as strong.

Some recommended CDT before disbudding with a recommendation of disbudding at 2 weeks. Would you recommend this or wait until 6 weeks if the doe had vaccine in the last month of pregnancy?

Unfortunately we do not ship outside the US and since the CDT needs to be refrigerated, it would be extremely difficult to get any to you.

Do breeding bucks need a booster annually? Or is that just pregnant does a month before they kid?

Thoughts vary on this but my answer is no. The thought process behind boosting the females is to increase the antibodies passed to the offspring pre and post lambing/kidding. In the case of most males, they will likely only need a booster every 5-7 years (possibly 10 in the case of tetanus).

I wonder how wild sheep get around all this vaccine business. I've never lost a sheep for the reasons given and I do not vaccinate - anything. We have 14.9 acres and its not enough, but no issues with over eating or tetanus. We do deworm our barn cats - lol.

They don’t get around it, they just die. Clostridium type C and D would more than likely not be an issue in the wild because they aren’t exposed to large amounts of grain they are going to eat in one sitting. Tetanus lives everywhere. It’s in the soil, on objects, etc… if an animal gets tetanus and they aren’t vaccinated, they just die. Same for humans.
