SHEEN TALKS: FR. JAMES MARTIN, SJ on The Seven Last Words

Live from The Sheen Center, February 11, 2016
Seven Last Words: An Invitation to a Deeper Friendship with Jesus
Based on his talks at New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Good Friday 2015, the New York Times bestselling author and editor at large of America magazine, Fr. James Martin, S.J. offers a portrait of Jesus, using his last words on the cross to reveal how deeply he understood our predicaments, what it means to be fully human, and why we can turn to Christ completely, in mind, heart, and soul.
Each meditation is dedicated to one of the seven last words:
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”
“Today you will be with me in Paradise.”
“Woman, this is your son” . . . “This is your mother.”
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
“I thirst.”
“It is finished.”
“Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”
With the warmth, wisdom, and grace that infuse his works, Father James Martin explains why Jesus’s crucifixion and death on the cross is an important teaching moment in the Gospels. Jesus’s final statements, words that are deeply cherished by his followers, exemplify the depth of his suffering but also provide a key to his empathy and why we can connect with him so deeply.

I was given the gift of faith. I have lived my life with Christ. Sometimes not well. Sometimes well, but always with Him.

At 19:15, Father Martin says Jesus "...was like us in all things except sin." Father Martin also, and frequently, says that Christ was also "fully human". How can Christ be "fully human" if he is unlike every human that ever lived, except His Mother, in that he had no sin? If Christ is without sin, that makes a very BIG difference between Him and all of us. How then can one say He is "Fully Human"?

Jesus "...was like us in all things except sin." You are right. He is unique. It is also asserted that Jesus is THE ONLY being who is fully God and fully man - EVER. So do you assert that He is not really human because He is also fully God? Does His divinity make Him not human? No. He is both. Both divine and human. It does mean that He is a singular being. No one else like Him. In the same manner as above, you are asserting that He is not human because He did not sin. But just as a Christian accepts as a matter of faith that He is both fully human and fully divine, so does the Christian accept that He is fully human yet singularly among humans, is without sin.

@@AL_YZ Then by the same logic, we could say that we are also fully divine, except that we have sin.

We still don’t really believe - most of us - that Jesus is human - fully human - It’s just too much I think but the implications of it once we grasp it I think on a large scale as Christians as human beings will change the world
