Hi, I just returned from an overnight camp on Bruny Island, Tas. I have a sea to summit etherlite mat but have always been worried about a puncture. Anaconda had their half mats on sale for $30 and they roll up very small. Had a super comfortable sleep and if one punctures you have the other. Worked a treat

Space blankets do work, the down side is they are so noisy when you move around in your sleep. I have found putting your riding jacket and pants under your sleep system works the best.

Another thing to put under you is your riding gear, adds a few more layers between you and the ground

Down sleeping bags are the way to go and ordering from China makes economical sense. Not a fan of the fleece blanket tho: too bulky. I rather have a very light second down sleeping bag (no hood) that adds much more warmth and much more compact than fleece. But if one is car-camping than bulk doesn't matter; some even go for a swag 😂

Great vid mate, need to be comfortable when camping no matter where. I personally use a Darche Cold Mountain bag (-5c) and has been awesome to date. As long as you are dry and your head is warm as well as the body you can sleep well!

I have used the space-blanket between sleeping bag and mat: it made a diffeence on a cold night, but it was a bit noisy when moving around. Best is to have an insulated sleeping mat (even if air mat)

Yeah, I heard those silver space blankets are noisy. I ended up getting a space blanked / tarp. Pretty quiet and definitely kept the heat in 👍

@@MidCoastAdventures slight downside with the blanket-tarp: a bit bulky. For me the key is to have an quality insulated air mat (Thermarest NeoAir and now Sea2Summit EtherLight). Non insulated mats are only good for summer camping

I"m about to walk the Larapinta Trail in Alice & have a 3/4 self inflating mat to put under my sleeping mattress, mainly to protect it from punctures, lots of rocks on the Larapinta. It's kind of doubling up but neither take up much room & i can use the self inflating mat as a seat & kneel pad at tent opening.

Hey Garth. Nah, I haven't tried a cot. If they're light and small (compact) enough, that may be a smart option to get off the ground, and not have to worry about leaks. I'll look into them. Cheers mate 👍

Hi Phil, I have a pair of Sea-to-Summit Etherlight Insulated mats ... 100mm thick, light 500gm and 3.2 R value. Had for few years and very happy EXCEPT all higher R value insulated mats that are light use a foil layer(s) inside which are very noisy ... roll and you wake yourself yourself and others around you. If you or any of the viewers has a product selection for high R value and light 500-700gm please me know

I seen the foil layered mats, figured they'd make noise. I might look at a small thin yoga mat - maybe. But will try the space blanket first. Cheers mate 👍

Very useful vid as always!.on my second trekology Mattress First one, I got a slow leak after a year or so of very rough use. Great value and comfort and small size. Didn't look for a leak, just bought another. Low heat insulation is perfect for the tropics as in Darwin. In the build-up before the monsoon, your huge lightning rod fishing rod would toast me. Ha ha.! I build hi rise in Darwin and we have had lightning hit the crane.

I think that may have been me that suggested using the space blanket. It worked for me last year on a freezing mid winter camp at Nundle. I got an old flanelette sheet that I folded in half and sewed 3 sides on ( well, my wife did 😂 ) to use as an inner for my sleeping bag and it worked a treat to keep the cold out ( same trip ). I also take 2 sleeping mats now and use one on top of the other for extra comfort. They're held together with two elastic straps when inflated. I roll them up together when packing up so all I have to do when setting up is unroll the whole thing and use the Flextail to pump them both up. It doesn't take any more time to pack or unpack and doesn't take up much space for the extra comfort.

@@MidCoastAdventures No worries Phil. Another thing I do when I only take one sleeping mat is to use another flanelette sheet sewn up on three sides and put the inflated mat inside it. It's like a mat cover. That also adds to the warmth by providing a barrier between the mat and the sleeping bag. Remember when the air mattresses in the old days had a felt top on them. Same principle. Can you tell that I've had a few cold nights over the years😂. There's always a way around everything without spending big and just putting a little thought into it👍. Also I think a lot of people don't realise that when you lie in your sleeping bag you compress it which doesn't give you the warmth that the rest of the lofted bag gives you. There's only a couple of mm between you and the mat. Cheers.
