There are many different foundation options available for sheds. However, I prefer the concrete slab foundation and the gravel shed foundation. When building my shed, I was lucky to have an existing 10'x10' concrete slab that I could build my slab upon. However, I made this video to discuss the shed base foundation options at a high level. Check out the links below for additional resources for building a shed foundation:

2. How to Build a Gravel Shed Foundation:

In the next few weeks, I will show you:

- How to Frame Shed Walls
- How to install a lean to shed roof
- How to Install shingles on a shed roof
- How to install Shed Windows
- And much, much more.

Back in 2006 after buying my first house me and my brother build two 12x8 storage sheds. Neither has done this before and it was before youtube. So we winged it. We dug a small hole and put an inch or two of gravel down in the 12x12” hole. It was on Settles ground but not down to rock. We used deck blocks in the corners and part way thru. 10 for one shed and more for the other. It would be taking more weight. Deck blocks. Mostly level and did the foundation on them. Sheds were still solid and level when I sold the place in 2018. From what Im reading they shouldn’t have lasted that long but that’s with heavy snow loads in long winters and wet summers. And built by two guys with no knowledge or experience. We could not have winged it more 😂😂

Awesome! I'm in the planning process of building a 12x12 shed and I'm going to do a gravel base with treated 4x4 runners on top of the stone followed by the box frame, should be super solid.

I like to watch the diy guys for ideas, but I watch the pros for technical stuff. Pros and cons belong with the pros not a diy’r. I dabble in a lot of trades that aren’t my own. . . And my learning approach has worked well. At least my stuff hasn’t killed anyone (that I know of) 😂

Actually using Pier/Deck Blocks is more common then you think. The solid 4x8x16 pavers are also useable, but may not be as reliable due to being prone to sinking and if built too high, the shed can shift. The plastic base foundation items are actually LESS common and garbage. Prone to sinking and deterioration.

Placing the concrete will push the WWM down to ground level unless you support it. You can pull the WWM back up to the middle of the slab as you move across the slab. The WWM does nothing if it is on the ground and the concrete covers it.

I live is southern Louisiana and to build a shed on skids and pavers is a very common thing down here, even as big as a 10’x12’. Obviously there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. If done correctly there are no issues.

@@jamesabestos2800 I just finished putting the OSB walls and roof on. My next big job is the double doors. I’m using mine as a small woodworking shop so my doors are going on the 10’ side so I can have the 12” length for bring longer birds in to be cut. So far I’m just under $1,000 but I’ll go over that when I buy the metal for the roof.

Please consider putting down 2" of foam insulation above a waterproof later, to have a thermal break from the ground, so it would be much cheaper to heat or cool the shed.

It would’ve been useful to talk about when choose each of these based on how much weight your shed actually is some of us have zoning laws, which means that we can’t attach to the concrete foundation as a permanent structure versus a wooden shed base sitting on top of a concrete slabwhich means that some of us have to be very careful about what exterior types that we pick such as stucco and heavier materials

I’ve got a question.. I’m planning on installing a 10x8 Arrow metal shed in my backyard. There’s already concrete, but it’s slopes towards the location of where the shed would be. What would be an inexpensive foundation to raise it so it doesn’t get wet inside when it rains? Arrow sells a metal foundation but it’s not for that particular model.

New to building, please help. Building a she shed office for wife 10x12 in washington state. Using 12 camo blocks with 4x4 posts using 2x6x12s on either side of the 4x4s to make beams using structural screws. The floor is then made of 2x6x10s with single 2x6x12 rim joist. Im using 2x4s for framing with 3/4 inch plywood subfloor siding with additional siding to be added and 3/4 inch plywood for the roofing. The beams go full length of the floor but the long sides are cantilevered 16 inches from the middle of 4x4 posts along the beam. The roof will be single pitch lean to style. Walls will be 7'6" on back and sides whereas approximately 9 feet on front. The shed will be finished on the inside in tiny home style fashion. And have a desk on the back side. I will have windows on the sides and a door in the middle front unless swapping it to the side is safer. Question is whether i can do this safely for my wife to work in 12 hours a day or whether i need to rebuild the walls to shorten over the beams or just focus theblive load to the center over the beams by putting the door in the middle. Most plans ive seen allow for the cantilever but when i look at residential building code the allowable floor cantilever is only the size of the floor joist. Ive built the beams floor and 3 walls already but as im new to building am getting nervous about putting the weight of those walls over the cantileverd sides. We won't have lots of things stored in the building as it will be meant for using computers and have decorations rather than storing heavy equipment and such.

I would've rather watched a wholesome moment of you giving it away before building your fancy one, than I would you needlessly destroying it. Your junk is somebody else's starter shed, people tend to forget this. Much love!
