I had the same dilemma, which dive computer will fit my needs. Full disclosure, I’m a new diver. Already registered to get my advanced open water, so I decided to get my dive computer, I was locked in to get the peregrine, I have been researching the peregrine dive computer for a while. Everything changed at the dive shop, after having both in my wrist, the Aqualung i330r felt natural, it can even be use as watch, I’m learning all the functions and can’t wait to try in my next dive. If you get the i330r just set the Bluetooth on and use the dive app to set all settings. Thank you for this video, I feel better about my dive computer.

Yes and double price of i330. May be in some idiotic country it is difference in 100 USD, but in real aqualung 2x time cheaper!

The difference in Europe is actually quite a lot more than "a hundred dollars". Cheapest I330 option I found was €280, whereas the Peregrine can be had for €470.

Great review as always, just pity that the algorithms were not compared, understandably because this is a review more focused to newer divers, but mentioning the differences between the algorithms and the possibilities in growth that GF of peregrine offer during your diving evolution would be a great plus to the review especially for the people looking to move towards Tec, the peregrine will do perfectly until you feel the need to get into Trimix whilst the aqualung will be trickier in terms of dive planning with your pairs.

I've just brought the i330r. Haven't dived it yet but it looks great. Been using the i300 for a while so this will move to my back up. I found the gas switching function on the i300 a bit fidely. I'm hoping it will be easier on the 1330r. Will post a full review in a couple of weeks

Thanks Mark for the comparison! I originally purchased the i330R after watching your comparison and several other promotional videos of the i330R. But after only 4 dives in Belize, the "first" i330R died and the dealer very quickly and graciously replaced it. The second one died after 22 dives and the third one died on dive #7 in Cozumel 2 weeks ago. Fortunately, I was working with a very responsible AquaLung dealer. Yep, purchased the Peregrine - hoping it's more reliable for this this 5,000+ dive Recon Marine - who started diving before computers and REALLY don't want to go back and memorize dive tables!

Peregrine: Standard Bühlmann ZHL-16C with gradient factors. No lockout for dive plan deviations. i330R: Proprietary "PZ+" algorithm - how does that work? How do you adjust conservatism or match it to your buddy's computer? Is the setup menu available during the dive? Does it lock you out if you don't follow the plan?

Aqualung updated their website and it states in the i330R manual that it uses ZHL-16C, rather than their Z+ algorithm. It's odd though since the i770R does use Z+

I've got the i330r now as my main (right wrist) and my i300 in the console with the SPG and compass. It's proving to be a great combination for recreational diving at a good price. The i330r was a lot cheaper in AUD than the Peregrine was, about $150.

I noticed that the i330r and i200c are at a similar price point; would you be able to do a brief comparison of those two ? Buhlmann ZHL-16C in the Shearwater makes it an easy choice. Shearwater also has awesome customer service in case there would be any problems and when the time comes to level up to more advanced models (Perdix, Teric, Petrel, Nerd) they work in the same way so minimal confusion

I currently use a aqualung dive computer and I'm quite happy with that but i just want one that has a few more options. After this comparison now the peregrine also a contender. Thanks for the review, I am really hesitating between the two but one of my main questions remain on the "vibration" alerts. I like the idea, but I dive in colder waters with a 7mm wetsuit, I don't like my dive computers to be very tight around my wrist and I'm afraid I won't notice it. How hard is the vibration? Regular phone call style? Game controller going crazy style? Would love some input on that...

One thing not mentioned is that Shearwater uses the Qi standard to charge their computers. So you don't need a special cable, that you can easily forget or lose. I personally have never used any of the Shearwater chargers with my Terics, I use the same charger that I use with my phone.

Thx for the video. I bought the i330r but unfortunately died less than 2 years (my previous one was a mares and died 3 years after) . Aqualung looks reactive. the alarms are quiet annoying and the screen is small but all informations are on it, except the ascent speed. good visibility of the screen despite brightness (i dive in tropics). The Iphone app is very simple to use and it's very easy to change parameters of the computer (depth of deep stop, the pf factor to more or most conservative...). the nato bracelet is excellent and very secure. If I could change, I'll probably take the peregrine but i won't mind keeping the i330R if they repare it.

The price is not really a 100 diference from one to the other. Your online shop is a good example of that, while the aqualung is at 300€, the shearwater is almost 670€

  • @Teampegleg

    @Teampegleg

Tariffs, he is comparing the US price. Shearwater comes out more competitively in the US market than the European market. A good example is comparing the Suunto D5, in Europe is well positioned at around 500 Euros. But in the US the price is absurd at around $900. So it is hard to justify it over superior technical computers from North American brands like the Teric, Perdix, Ratio, or Garmin.

  • @DidierWolfs

So many comments taking the price into account, before saying if the I330R fits their needs and future needs better than the Peregrine. I don’t say that one is better than the other, but purchasing such an important piece of gear, based on 100 or 200 €/$ difference makes no sense to me. Especially, knowing the cost of all the other gears we have and not to mention the cost of the dives and classes we pay for. We are not doing a cheap leisure and diving computer is such such important for our safety.

If I were in the market, I'd save a bit longer and get the Perdix. I'm considering getting a Peregrine as a backup computer although the cheaper i330R might be perfect for that. The Shearwater Cloud software shows some unfortunate warts on both the phone and on high resolution / scaled displays.

While it does serve its purpose, I tend to agree it can be awkward to use. I believe mostly because of their choice of cross-platform framework (or the amount of polish given). As I software developer, I occasionally think "man I'd love to make this better" but I've never seen a job opening at Shearwater in that area and they probably outsource it or leave changes to interns (not to mention I'm gainfully employed and my experience isn't 100% applicable - but Shearwater, if you're looking...).
