I bought the peregrine and used it the last 2 weeks in bonaire, very happy with it, easy to read and the log sync to the app works great! Battery lasts a long time (charge it in the evening and you never go wrong, had a battery pack in my kit that can charge it 20 times when on a boat)

I use the Suunto Vyper Novo. It’s air integrated, can use up to 3 nitrox mixes, and I can change the battery. It’s only $350. If you accidentally exceed your NDL it will provide you with info to ascend safely. Great for beginners like myself.

yeah! not sure about the hype of keeping your dive computer on your wrist all the time! You dont wear mask and fins to be ready for a dive as well. One night dive or any cold water dive, 40+ age bracket = you appreciate big active color display. Used to wear this mask strap mounted light just to be able to use LCD computer and hated it. AI is a one big miss for today's rec market, would have been #1 if it had it.

As you talked about digital dive logs, which I also use (2020 and all), how did you select your digital log? I was diving a couple of different computers depending on gear and trip so I went for a log that can work with both. How did you pick yours?

Worst kept secret.... LOL. Is that all because of DGX? AI - Tough call. Never been a deal breaker for me personally, but I recently picked up a Perdix AI and I do like having it all on my wrist instead of reaching down to unclip my brass n' glass. For an entry level diver though, I'm doubt they know what they're missing and the transmitter is usually an additional $200-ish, so if you're including that as a factor it's not entirely fair to say any of the AI computers are

Oh I'm definitely a Shearwater fanboy too. For the featues I care more about, the user changeable battery being a big one, the Aqualung just edged it. Looking forward to getting hands on with the Peregrine and getting it wet.

Well thank you for this video! I loved the look of the peregrine, loved the price in comparison to the teric which would probably be my next choice - but didn't even realise it didn't have AI. No deal for me.

I purchased the Shearwater Teric last year to replace my long used Sherwood Wisdom 2 because I like the bright display and functionality and felt it had all the capabilities that I could grow in to as a diver. I love the Teric, however, I am mostly a Rec/Nitrox diver and doubt I will ever use all the Tec capabilities of the computer. When I saw the release of the Peregrine I thought I might have blown it and spent too much on the Teric as the Peregrine looks like it might be a better fit for me. However, with this review and learning that it is NOT AI, it is not the right one for me.

James. Recently got introduced to the scuba world loving it ready to go in on my first computer. Was thinking about the Atmos mission one. Anything thoughts or insight on this computer any help would be appreciated love the channel

Adding a transmitter to one of the AI computers adds $300-$400 dollars to the price so then we are comparing a $450 purchase to an over $800 purchase when comparing to the Peregrine. Quite a difference. For what it is worth, I am a dive instructor in Thailand. Dove for 5 years with a AI setup (and a backup SPG) before the transmitter stopped working. Since then I have used an SPG. For me the difference is minimal. Enjoyed the video though!

For me the Peregrine clicked most of the boxes. I bought mine within 2 hours of the reveal. Granted, AI would be a big plus and a changeable battery as well. But for me, and probably other optically challenged divers, the big color screen tipped the scales. There’s not enough contrast in my other two computers to make reading quick and easy. Plus the vibration warning in lieu of the beep is better for me as I have hearing loss from decades of ear abuse. Color change warnings are also a plus for me. I was about to sell another guitar and buy a perdix but this is close enough for me. On the battery issue I’ll be carrying my Giotto as a spare that has a changeable battery. Yeah the lds shopkeeper runs a perdix ai as his main and peregrine for backup. That setup makes sense.

I love my older scuba pro solar powered computer. On the battery front there is no competition!!

I recently upgraded my Mares Smart (which burns up batteries like mad- changing every couple months!) to the Peregrine. I do miss having my computer double as a watch, but I LOVE the bigger, easier to see screen. I’m pushing 50, and the eyes just aren’t as good as they used to be. Presbyopia is not fun. I’ve done dives with it now down to 122’ and it’s worked fantastically well for what I need. Very pleased with the Peregrine!

Hi Guiliano! Great to see you again! I guess it depends how many dives you think you're going to do between now and when you will realistically start your tec training. Work out what you can sell your i300c for. Take that amount off the price of the i470TC and divide the remainder by the amount of dives you're going to put on it... and then tell me if it's worth it 'per dive'!

James, I like the review. My wife and I have been diving the Peregrine for about 2 years. We started with Cressi Lenardo and two things the monochromatic screen was hard to read when diving at the Blue Grotto dive resort. Inside the cavern entrance. Low light conditions. Then the Leonardo would constantly beep. Our peregrines last about 35 to 40 hours of diving before being charged. We do wait until the low battery warning before charging them. Peregrine does not have a compass or AI due to internal hardware. Otherwise it's a great computer to dive with.

For me, color display isn't so important as a larger display. The other item you didn't mention is how intuitive the menu system is. I have limited experiences with different dive computer brands having first used a Suunto Mosquito (junk), then a Zoop (lousy) and finally found the Uwatec Galileo (awesome) and haven't looked back since. However, with the Suunto and the Zoop, I found the menuing system to be completely incomprehensible. The thing I like about the Galileo is the menus work more like modern devices. From my friends who all own Shearwater they say the same thing about their computers.

Great information James! Could you possibly do a comparison video with the Shearwater Perdix AI vs Aqua-Lung I770r. Both are priced comparatively. I’ve seen reviews on both individually but not both head to head. Pros and cons of rechargeable vs replacing batteries, etc. Which I remember you saying 9 out 10 dive instructors prefer to replace batteries. Lol Trying to decide on my next level computer for tech diving. Maybe you don’t have to do a video but just some advice. Thank you.

As a cold water diver having a larger screen is nice. As for the 3 gas 100 % nitrox feature. If someone got this as their first computer as an advanced open water diver and progressing to advanced nitrox and deco its nice to have to only buy one more new computer/bottom timer just before a course The shearwater Peregrine will get the diver going onto most tech diving (non trimix Ext) and so it just gives options. AI Would be nice but not a deal breaker. I prefer a built in battery as it's one less thing to flood. Talking to shearwater the other day I asked how many times they have see perdix vs Teric come in for flooding issues and they said its a huge difference. Way less problems with Teric. Just one less issue long term.

Console computers are only as great as the number of times you remember to look at them. I've always preferred wrist mounted data displays, but lots of people out there prefer a console.

Hi James. When my Vyper Air finally let me down, I bought the Aqualung i770R. It looks very similar to the Peregrine with colour screen, has Bluetooth and I got a deal that effedtively got me a transmitter free of charge. Needed the bigger screen as my eyes are not what they used to be.

Diving for 30 years. Still using a Suunto Companion after many years. Got a TUSA Imprex copy of the Companion in case the Companion fails, but it's still going with only 1 battery change. Basic and reliable. Suunto Zoop if I had to buy another one.

I like to have multiple Nitrox settings because all the local dive shops fill your tank with any percentage of oxygen. I plan my dives and know the depths. So I'll bring a mix of different gases. I might have a 3 day dive with EAN28, EAN34 and EAN37. So it is nice to have them all programmed into the dive computer the night before. During the dives I'll switch my gas setting as I switch my tanks. It just nice to have. I, also, am not wild about non-user replaceable batteries. WAY better than checking the battery level the night before and charging the computer. I just dive it until it tells me the battery is low. On the next surface interval I switch the battery. This is why I use a Perdix and not a Teric.

This was a tough call for me. The difference between the Peregrine and the Perdix 2 is more than $500 but the lack of AI and the fact that I'm moving closer to technical diving pretty much made the Peregrine a pass for me. I've been diving my Perdix for a little over two months now and don't regret it.

I am interested as to what companies decline your request for an item to test. Please advise.

I have dived with the Suunto Viper for 22 years but need to finally upgrade...was a good watch and loved it. What would you recommend for a higher budget?

Mr. James... Can U recommend a rec dive Wrist Computer..I'm getting older.. my eyes are getting older... Im been using the Mares Puck Pro.. Id like a wrist computer with the largest numbers on the face. Maybe a colored background???I have a $400-500 budget.

The Peregrine is the original Perdix without the OC TEC and CC/BO modes, but with haptic feedback. I wouldn't mind seeing a Peregrine AI in the future for say $700 to $800, like they did with the recently released Tern and Tern TX. Not that I'm a customer for the Peregrine. I'm very, very happy with my Perdix AI and Perdix 2 both running in OC TEC mode, even on REC dives. They're absolutely amazing.

Can you do an update on this topic? I would really appreciate it. I’m going to be getting back into Scuba after 7 years off. When I started my first dive computer was an Oceanic OCS. Complete garbage computer and stopped working after 6 months. Leaning toward the Shearwater because I have heard good things about it but I don’t know what else has been released since then. Thanks!

I've been thinking about the Shearwater Peregrine because we love night dives and it would be great not to have to hit a button or shine my light on my lcd screen computer in order to read it. Do any of the 3 lcd screen computers here have an automatic backlight function to sense lack of light during night dives?

Hey James, thanks for the great informational dive videos! I am looking to get my first recreational dive computer and recently found out about the Aqualung i330r from my local dive shop. After watching this video I am curious how you think this new i330r model with Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, a color screen, rechargeable battery, 4 operating modes (Air, Nitrox, Gauge, and Free Dive), updatable software, and 3 gas capability compares to other dive computers on the market under $500. I just did 20 dives in 5 days with some buddies down in your neck of the water and I now want to get my own dive computer before my next big dive trip. I am from Colorado so I will mainly be traveling to tropical destinations when I dive, but I would love to do some alpine diving at some point, maybe try a bit of freediving as well, and after doing lots of awesome reef dives and diving the Vandenberg wreck off of Key West, I would like to do all of these types of diving and keep progressing with my dive skills in the future. That being said, I'm not a tech diver and don't know if I will be anytime soon, so I know some of the top-of-the-line options are a bit overkill for what I need. Would love to know how you think the i330r compares to these or any new comparable products on the market today as well. Thank you and cheers!!

Apparently Aqualung recalled the i330r because of leaking issues. Just something to be aware of before buying - make sure it isn't a faulty model.

Seems odd to compare the Peregrine to a bunch of watches. Size factor alone, it stands out. Wouldn't it have been a more fair comparison to pair it up to a bunch of pucks?

Hi James, like the latest review, sorry I’m a bit of and old school I’m sticking with my Suunto Stinger, and I’ve been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century and got a Suunto eon core, I couldn’t afford the Shearwater Perdix Ai, one day 😉

Something I've seen I've seen other review channels do is have a Patreon. the money from the backers is used to buy equipment to be reviewed, which helps you stay independent of your review and no way of having a "paid endorsement", and then the equipment is given to a random patreon supporter. Just an idea. Newly certified diver and new subscriber.

I consider a user changeable battery to be a negative. Batteries in a save a dive kit don’t last. The last time I used one, it lasted only a couple of days. You can also flood the computer if the compartment doesn’t seal. The killer app on the Peregrine was the built in induction charger. It will hold the charge for months and one charge is good for several days of diving. You can keep a USB charger in your save a dive kit and plug it into any USB to charge. I’m not sure why you consider Nitrox limited to technical diving. I dive air locally, but on trips I use nitrox. I bought the peregrine in 2021 when one of the contacts on my old computer was damaged (during a battery change). I’ve been very happy with it and love the Bluetooth log downloading. I think I would choose a different logging software that allows pictures and hyperlinks. The Shearwater software doesn’t.

On 2019 DEMA show i was waiting for something like the peregrine (+ IA) from Suunto. But they didn't upgrade their zoop or vyper computers, but my local dive shop has the D5 in the mexican equivalent of black friday at a very reasonable price so i bought it. At the beginning i found it kind of nagging (let's do a deep stop, you are ascending to fast, i told you that you were ascending to fast now i have to punish you) but now i know what it want and we get along, at the moment just once it makes me do a deep stop while everyone else were starting to ascend but i keep that option activated, it makes me feel more safe. And in the last upgrade it transform into a smart watch so i bought a leather strap and now it's my everyday watch

How does the Mares Smart Air computer compare?

Great vid may consider the peregrine as a cheaper backup to my perdix. I was looking at the aqua lung before and now I am not sure.

Hi James. Good video. Now that manufacturers are looking at what you are doing, Could you find out with them why they are adding three gases on these computers? There should be a reason why they are doing it. My guess is that they are designed for limited decompression (advanced nitrox) but are afraid of saying so (liability). My wife’s I300C manual doesn’t specifically tell you that decompression dives are prohibited; if I read the manual correctly. But it tells you how decompression works under the section of “complications”. The computer will tell you when to switch gas if you programmed it with more than one gas. What I have not been able to find is a dive planner for the Z+ algorithm so it would be difficult to plan a decompression dive where you plan to use accelerated decompression. Perhaps just a regular Bulhmann dive planner will do. Regards.

Yes, in that instance, a regular Buhlmann planner would work fine. The Z+ is not that dissimilar, especially in the 100-150ft range.

We’re a dive family, and my wife and I have identical gear. I decided for my daughter to get her a different BCD and Regs. I mostly regret that not because the gear is a problem but that my daughter is always trying to figure out the difference. For example her mom quizzed here on how to release air from her bcd and she started point to non existent ports that were on her mothers bcd. So we had to remind her of her BCD’s configuration. Doesn’t sound like a big deal but in the water under stress it could be an issue. I just recently got her her own computer and went with the same as her mothers and mine. I felt this was the right way to go because of the complexity of a dive computer and commonality. What are your thoughts?

My thoughts on this are simple: every diver needs to be completely familiar with all the workings of their gear, and their buddy's gear, from head to toe. It doesn't matter if it's the same gear or not. And gear choices need to be optimised for the diver. My wife loves her Zeagle BCD, (even in my size) I just couldn't get on with it. I dive what's right for me, she dives what's right for her... BUT we are completely familiar with each other's set ups, in case of emergency.

What do you think about the Mares Quad and Mares Quad Air?

Good Analysis, Fair and just. You missed 1 category? Customer Service..... Of course Shearwater owns the one. Flip side, it does not change the end Result. I too would buy the i470tc as a Recreational Diver, of the 4 on your list. BUT WAIT......... You did forget the Atmos Mission One, no AI, but it does have GPS. Hands down the BEST recreational computer display on the market. (Let me know if you want to test it James, I can drop it off to you). Now lets be fair to the Non AI computers, I have meet a lot of divers with their own Dive Computer and not Regulator. So this is important, and Many dive shops will not put your transmitter on their Rental Gear. Ok, so for me, I own the OCi (last generation of the i470tc), the atmos, a Teric and Petral 2. I teach and dive in a BP/w always, so I always have a spg. So, since Teaching is a lot of sunlight and up and downs, I decided to sell the OCi (on ebay now) and use the Mission One for Training sessions (the screen is that amazing), then back to Shearwater for check out dives 3-5 OW and all other diving. Of course the Atmos goes on all trips so I can steal those super secret dive site GPS coords. :)

I bought MARES SMART .. 200$ (in sale, white-black color is in sale frequently). Everyone can afford this one and if you are use to rent computer it will return very quickly. It has all basic functions what recreational diver need include nitrox, user changeable battery, thicker watch design .. still usable for daily use during whole holiday. Freedive mode is also available just after freediving you need to do small reset (reset only safety times log stays forever) or wait 24hour before switch to diving mode. Data transfer is available only with cable/bluetooth extra cable which is not included in package... I dont need it.

I got so used to dive with AI that for me a computer without is no option. I just bought a Mares genius before the lockdown wich unfortunately never got wet 😢 so far. But I always dove Mares Computers so I know how to use and read it.

D4i novo is just too old for Suunto to update it with Bluetooth, the new D5 has Bluetooth and is easy to use. So perhaps don't go too harsh on them(?) I personally used both of them and both are adequate dive watches given consideration to the release date of both watches. But you don’t start to appreciate a LED screen until you dive it in a night dive😂

With user changable gradient factors and 3 switchible gasses the Peregrine is really an entry level technical computer. It would be perfect for the standard 50m wreck with a bit of accellerated deco.

I would never give up the flexibility of my tec mode interface on my petrel but if this thing can do 3 gas mixes and has adjustable GF then there is zero reason not to use it on non-trimix tec diving. Does not matter that they pitch it at rec divers.

I'll watch any video by Mark Newman and James Blackman, knowing I'll enjoy every minute of it. I don't think they've ever given insincere or paid advice. They'll tell you when they don't like something, and give all the reasons why.

I'm watching this in July 2022, but I don't get the calling out of Suunto for Bluetooth... My Eon Steel has dives pumped to my phone via Bluetooth even before I'm back on the boat (assuming my phone is on the boat). Got my daughter a D5 (was a great deal with a free tank pod), and that too pumps dives to her phone as soon as it's within range. Ok, the Eon Steel's their top model but the D5 is very decent (as long as you don't need trimix or CCR), and seems to work fine with Bluetooth.

Why didn't you toss the Atmos Mission One in the mix? I'm really torn now between the Peregrine (brand reputation) and the Mission One (many more features, but new kid on the block)

I’ve been hands on with the Atmos One. It’s a piece of junk. If you need GPS, you’re going to have to fork out for the Garmin Descent.

Just the computer. Transmitters are always sold separately. At least in the States. Every now and then there will be a special deal (I've seen Suunto and Aqualung do this) where you buy the computer and they give you a free transmitter, but this is a special deal only.

Mares Quad Air... Is my choice... big minus is the lack of Bluetooth and digital compass on the plus side is the big display (for my tired eyes and I don't need a diving computer as a watch)

Realistically, I think the only reason they didn't go for ai is because it would dissuade people from getting the perdix or teric. I adore my teric, but if this had been an option when I first started diving, I wouldn't have thought twice about it.

Nice comparison ;) I'm sitting at 85% convinced to buy a Peregrine to replace my i300...I want more (now) ;) I'm tired of the monochrome tiny screens! it's 2020...not 1980! Put the Ataris away already! I know I'll be buying a Perdix in a year or two though ;) I really wish they had put the digi-compass on the Perigrine!

Why buy the perigrine now and then buy the perdix in 2 years? Just buy the Perdix, its a great computer that does everything

@@mbryant1136 mainly it was a budgeting thing. I hada few more toys I was buying at the time! I ended up getting a Peregrine for under $80 out of pocket (card points, store coupons, and site deal)...so yeah it worked out ;)

I'd also put it up against the new Atmos Mission ONE which can be had for ~ $300 on sale. Color screen, buhlman, custom gradient factors, no AI. Also seems odd to compare it to a bunch of watch-style computers with no color screens, one of the obvious differentiators.

Speaking of watches, or wrist computers, what is the watch you are wearing in most of your videos? It looks a lot like a Breitling Aerospace, tho that's a pilot's watch I know, but look similar. I'm not a diver, but want to be. I have been to a few dive shops and always felt like an outsider, like they were there for experienced divers only. You seem like you genuinely want beginners to start diving and to hell with the snobs. Big thanks for that, wish more dive shops were like you. Cheers

When students ask for a computer recommendation, I have say a Perdix. It is simple and easy to use on top of so many other loves. New divers are taken back by the price, so I’m excited by this. I think it’s a great recommendation for entry level divers who aren’t ready to invest in the more expensive models.

It’s a color display, and you can change the brightness as you’d like. Shearwaters come with software for logging dives. They are incredibly easy to use and very intuitive.

Nice work, but I still think 500$ for a computer for recreational diving is A LOT. I just bought 2 Scubapro Aladin One Matrix for 180€ each. They have bluetooth for logging dives on your phone (no cables or odd interfaces), they manage Nitrox, they have 2 plastic buttons (not those tedious metal buttons the Suunto Zoop have or the single button of the Mares Puck). Why should I spend 2.5 times that (unless money make no difference for me which unfortunately isn't true) ?

The new Apple Watch ultra doubles as a dive computer. Looking forward to reviews

Question for watches how do you get it over your wet or dry suit. They don't fit .the stra0 is not long enough.

Both mine and my gf's aqualungs came with an extension strap included, but both (barely) fit over our wrists with 10mm neoprene in between without the extension...

Pergerine is perfect. I'd rather glance at my spg than spend $399 (almost the price of the computer itself) to have air integration.

Hi James. The issue with the Aqualung is that, yes, it's AI, but a transmitter is about $400 extra. That's no longer in the targeted price range.

Right, but the computer has the functionality, so it's an option for those who want it (and I do!) as opposed to not being an option at all.

Hey man. You should update this video. You should review the ATMOS. It came out after this video. By no means is it for tech diving, but for a recreational diver it is a good buy and has some very basic smart watch features. I’ll be happy to send you mine to review it if you want. Give me a shout to discuss if you’re interested.

I record my dives manually still, no computer yet 😪 i AM looking though, i swear. I like the idea of an RGBM algorithm, since I want to do some altitude diving. I wish the garmin descent had AI and a smaller price point - not sure if its RGBM or not, but i like the unit overall as a recreational computer and to wear as a regular sport watch, cause it has land GPS, pretty sure its BT as well. Not sure if it would live up to tec diving standards though. Anyway, im still looking, so thanks for the video and enjoy the weekend 👌👌

The MK2 will have AI...but rumor is the US Navy is interested in it now and that has slowed the release. The Navy wants a few more bells and whistle features and requires additional testing and certs ;) I hope the Navy doesn't have them pull AI though....100% unverified RUMINT!

OK me and everyone else is screaming the same thing At shearwater Even though there was a few undesirable issues with this model all of them can be Grudgingly understood Because I can say they are definitely targeting the Recreational market And would be things that would honestly not really matter to that market however having no air integration in this day and age where the industry is Promoting it As is no excuse For shearwater not to include it And in my opinion a terrible mistake once your orders part..... And please let me preface this by saying I am and have been for a very long time a Shearwater fanboy And A technical diver and literally trust my life with this company.. And a side note as a person who buys all the scuba gear in my household this would have been an easy sell for me to buy my wife one If it had the AI However when I showed this to my life who is a fairly recently Certified diver Who grew up so to speak in this modern age and scuba diving and told her we would have to switch back to an old to gauge she laughed.... And said..... Um no..

That was a deal-breaker for me. I was literally ready to order this computer and saw there was no AI. No compass is also a problem.

All my students learn to dive with a gauge and most continue to do so later on (as do I).

Looked up the Auqalung and it looks like you have to also buy a separate $399-$425 AI transmitter (which makes sense of course). Ouch. Do I understand that correctly? If so, that completely changes the price point discussion.

The transmitter is always separate. It’s another $300-$400.

I bought it, great computer. No AI. Going to sell it soon for one with. A thought for anyone thinking about it...!!!

(i450t vs i470tc vs i200c vs i300c)I have done 10 dives and counting... I am planning for advance courses also...
