I am 47 and I just started scuba diving for the first time. My eyesight for reading is not 100% anymore wich made the screen my main requirement. After looking at a few puck entry models with b.w. screens I ended up investing a lot more than I initially planned by buying a Suunto Eon Core. But I think it's worth it. Having a computer you can barely read does not make sense. For people in the same situation, I recommend going to a store and compare the screens in real life. Don't trust pictures on the internet, they always seem perfect and can be misleading. The screen on the Eon is one of the best, but it is not cheap and battery life suffers a bit.

Shearwater Peregrine. I had an AI watch, then moved to Shearwater. Amazing!! I don’t need the feature of the Perdix

I think that in 2023- AI is the must. However- no matter what computer you buy - please RFM, and play with the unit !! Just came back from Cuba, and there was a guy who pulled out brand new shiny Peregrine, and was asking the DM how to set it up 🤦‍♂️

My dive computer requirements are - Backlight, nice big screen, AI, multi gas support, nice to have a compass, replacable battery, Bluetooth support, So Perdix is a perfect choice.

I purchased a SEAC Screen last year. Had it Warrantied 3 times. All I did was Freedive in a pool an excessive amount. Ended up using my Store Credit for a Genesis Centauri. Love it.

How does the Apeks DSX compare to a Shearwater Petrel? In terms of technical and CCR diving?

Love my perdix ai and peregrine combo. Definitely wear a spg since air left is always necessary to know. Secondhand is also fine.

I really only have one requirement when it comes to dive computers. It's got to be the latest Shearwater Perdix.

Firstly, thanks for making this video, it's been very helpful. As a first-time diver, should I just opt for an air integrated computer straight-away (like the vyper lite), or do you feel that's unnecessary?

I'd say they're worth it. They're not essential but, they are useful for more than checking your cylinder pressure. The good thing is that they still function without a transmitter as a normal dive computer and if you want to invest in a transmitter later on you can. If you buy a computer that doesn't have the wireless feature and later on you want a transmitter then you need to buy a whole new dive computer. The Suunto Vyper Novo is a great dive computer at a sensible price.

@ScubaDiverMagazine thanks for the input! Yeah, I think it just makes more sense, long-tem, just to get one with that capability. I'm deciding between the suunto vyper, the aqualung i450/i70, and the geo air/oci w/transmitter bundle.

Hi Mark what are your thoughts on the aqualung I770 VS the Apeks new DSX I'm pretty much narrow it down to these two , if they were price the same . I do realize I may never use some on the DSX functions of the DSX . I'm a avid diver and not unusual for me to do between 75 and 125 dives season both warm water and dry suit diving. I currently dive either a watch with integrated air or a all in one console computer thanks NickA

i770R is aimed at recreational divers where the DSX is made for technical divers so, it depends on the depths you visit regularly. The i770R is a few years old now and the DSX has a lot more features that have been developed in that time i770R uses the Z+ algorithm while the DSX a Bühlmann. As far as I know the Pelagic Z+ was based off the Bühlmann and is quite similar so, I wouldn't worry too much about the difference in recreational depths. The strap options are quite different; i770R has the NATO style watch strap while the DSX gives you the choice of bungee or elastic fabric straps. Both are good quality and secure but, it should be part of the decision process. The screen and body size you won't notice too much of a difference as well as the three button user interface. DSX has vibration alarms, sidemount mode, CCR, helium, GPS, O2 analyser, induction charging, slate function, advanced alarms and probably a few other things I've forgotten about...

Battery kits: 2 to 8 dollar battery and a 30 dollar o-ring? Don-t mind people earning a living, but this makes me scratch my head on the margins made on dive gear. Often see same price everywhere for the same product where I wonder if there are priceagreements in place. I do not know any market where this is ok.

#askmark Hey Mark I am curious as to what percentage of "for fun" diving is actually "technical" around the globe. I have seen many of your computer videos and understand the buy cheap buy twice. But $600 for a Peregrine is not "cheap" to me. Am I making a mistake not buying the Perdix 2. Thanks a Bunch!

  • @ScubaDiverMagazine

I'd say that number is quite small, probably single digit percentage. Unless you're diving trimix or deeper than 40-50m then the Peregrine is more than enough dive computer for most divers. Other than trimix, the main upgrades for the Perdix are the AA battery, air integration and compass. They both use the same algorithm and function much the same. I don't dive particularly deep anymore and only really dive air and nitrox now so, the Peregrine would be a good choice of computer

Hey Mark, im curious what your thoughts about the Suunto Eon Core are. Im planning to buy a dive computer that i can use a long period... I will get into Tek diving within the next 3 years. So for me the Suunto Eon Core looks just perfect (Since it also features Trimix or would you prefer the Sheawater Peregrine?). Best greetings Can

Both are great dive computers, the EON Core has the edge on Trimix and wireless AI. As much as I love shearwater computers if you're planning on diving He then you'll need the EON Core. The Peregrine is aimed at recreational divers where the EON Core is aimed at both rec and tec divers. It does have a MOD of 80m, if you want to go deeper then you'll need the EON Steel or a Perdix.

#askmark Hi Mark, is there any AI computer you would recommend for recreational and technical diving that doesn't require to repair the pressure module at every dive? I now have the Mares Quad Air but during night dives it's a bit of a pain to use with very limited backlight

Sure, anything with a Pelagic Transmitter such as AquaLung, Apeks, Shearwater, Oceanic etc. where you enter the transmitter S/N into the computer and it will be paired for life. If you need tech diving features I'd narrow it down to Shearwater or Apeks.

That’s right. Too many divers are over-equipping and under-trained - which is true for many sports.
