THIS STORY:
From Life Magazine, November 1951 edition, page 58:
“9 year old tightrope walker performer Maria De Campa was killed by one of the circus lions. On the very next morning, one of the circus trucks overturned on the wet roads near Pencil Bluff and let loose two leopards, two black bears, four monkeys and a polar bear into the woods. The local sheriff promptly organized a posse of more than a hundred men armed with rifles and shotguns. Within a few hours, a group of 19 men found one leopard. They all blasted away, but a state trooper, who was using a submachine gun, got credit for the kill.”
A terrible day in Mena Arkansas, for the people...and the circus animals.
THIS CHANNEL:
_________________________________________________________
The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

My brother when he was only 3, back in 1956 was a little terror. My mom was doing dishes and keeping an eye on him and my older sister playing in the yard. In a flash that boy dug out from under the fence and took off. Sister came running in saying “he’s gone mama!” My poor mom went crazy looking for him and they lived in Cincinnati at the time not far from downtown. She came around the corner to a parade and on top of an elephant was my brother just a waving at the crowd. 🐘 The circus had just gotten into town, so they had a parade before they settled in. My mother about fainted on the sidewalk. But they gave him back safe and sound after seeing my mother waving her dish towel and screaming “that’s my baby!” 😱 ….Back then the circus was really big. I’ve never been to one or taken my kids to any. I’m the youngest sibling born in 70’. But the story is hilariously funny in our family and my brother seemed proud of it. 🎪 Things we’re different back then. But something about circuses just seems so wrong. 😔 Poor baby, getting mauled breaks my soul..💔

I hope the precious child was not blamed for the lion attacking her and the cause of her death. She was a nine year old child and should be protected. The lion should have been in a cage, not chained to a truck! I wonder, whoever is the mother, has she visited her daughter's grave, the father and siblings? Has she been forgotten about as far as the family? It is very thoughtful that the residents of the town remember the precious child and keep up her grave. Thank you for acknowledging the precious child and her story (her short life).

Thank you for being respectful towards the soldier. I have ancestors who fought on both sides. For the ordinary Confederate soldier, it wasn’t all about slavery- it was a matter of being forced into service or volunteering because they were representing their state. Many joined because the North were invading their lands. If I was one of my young male ancestors, I would have been born and raised in Tennessee, so I would fight for Tennessee, if that makes sense.

I do like the idea of having them in a museum, but at the same time they do represent history, good or bad, it is a reminder actual history. We can’t erase history. Did they tear down Auschwitz? Should they tear down Auschwitz? No. It’s a reminder for those that are deniers, now and in the future.

  • @kitterzy

    @kitterzy

    2 жыл бұрын

@@FacesoftheForgotten But they were erected by people who wanted to rewrite the history of the Confederacy in the South. Technically, I would take that to mean that the accurate history needs to be put back into focus, and remove the glorification of inaccurate history. This isn’t like Auschwitz or even the 9/11 memorials. It would be as if the German people erected a statue of Hitler in the late 1940s because back then they thought he was a great leader, etc. and left it there until the current year with that inscription. I also think (playing devil’s advocate) that anyone being glorified in a monument without an accurate historical context in the description is wrong. This can also be applied to a few past presidents as well. EDIT: I don’t feel they should be destroyed as they should be a record of what people did to try and keep their version of history alive-right or wrong. It just needs to be removed, placed in a history museum, and the corrected history put in its place.

One of my great-grandmothers (I'm from Mena) lived to be 101 with her strong mind all the way to her death. When "Decoration Day" was nearing, she would buy several single-stemmed artificial flowers (10 cents each, at the time) at the local Ben Franklin's Five and Dime variety store. On "Decoration Day", after decorating the graves of her loved ones, she'd go through the cemetery and put a single flower on any grave that didn't have one. I loved that tradition of hers.

We had a tiger mauling here in Naples Fl recently. Cleaning staff member at the zoo put his hand in the tiger enclosure. The tiger got his arm and the man managed to call 911 for help. The tiger would NOT let his arm go, so they had no choice but to shoot the tiger. It was late at night and they would not have time to get someone to tranquilizer the tiger. Once they have prey, they do not let it go.

Things like this juz really angers me. I am totally against 100% hurting. I see no reason for it. And the torture they went through so wrong! They could have tryed at least to capture and return those animals. Not juz free for all the killing. So inhumane. I hope those responsible for this child were held accountable to its full extent!

@@deebreaux9467 Probably to dangerous to capture them. Look at zannesville. They shot and killed 52 exotic animals. The vet tried to tranquillise a tiger and was almost killed. It takes to long to take affect. There was Lions ,tigers and wolves etc.

How exactly is it erasing history when in several states there are places called "Confederate Park"? How about moving every statue to Confederate Park. Hell, put them in cemeteries. Have all the books been destroyed? Every file on the internet that talks about the Civil War?
