Regarding that "adrenaline doesn't negate damage" argument, I literally JUST saw a video of a motorcyclist getting sideswiped by a car, and go flying probably 100 feet. Dude got up, cussed a bit, limped another 25 feet, then passed out the moment his adrenaline began to fade. He was awake again not even a minute later and was trying to get back up to retrieve his bike. He had to have 2 people hold him still so he wouldn't make his injuries worse. I think that's proof enough that adrenaline negates damage.

It doesn't negate damage, but allows you to ignore the damage you've taken for a limited amount of time! So many people in real life stumble around with 0 hit points as people frantically try to convince them to get on a stretcher-but it'd take a lot of work to implement that in D&D without players inevitably trying to use that "ability" every time. You just can't trust players _not_ to take advantage of such a mechanic.

Intro story: Wow. OP, I am amazed that Barbarian ever forgave you for that. If someone treated me like that, I’d never want to see them again, and if I ever treated someone like that, I wouldn’t blame them one bit for never wanting to see me again. I’m glad you were able to grow as a person and move forward, and I am impressed at how incredibly forgiving Barbarian is. First story: And that, friends, is what we in the business call a ✨🚩Big Ol’ Red Flag🚩✨. Even when I first started DMing, I was better prepared than this. I have more preparation than this for campaign ideas I don’t even know if I’ll ever get to run. Second story: Oh boy, it’s one of those asshats who starts throwing a fit about bigotry whenever anything they don’t like happens, regardless of logic. As a woman myself, I need to point out that it’s not sexist for a female character to die if she does something suicidally stupid like this. What would be sexist would be coddling her and letting her survive things that would be lethal to anyone else just because she’s a woman. People like this brat give actual feminism a bad name, and that’s not even getting into the transphobia. Trans women are real women, trans men are real men, and gender is not a binary. Third story: You know, three out of my four players have been diagnosed with autism, and I, the DM, have been told it’s likely that I’m autistic too, though I’ve only officially been diagnosed with ADHD. We all put loads of effort into creating our characters and world. I don’t think being autistic is why the DM’s campaign ended up like this… Fourth story: Yeah, I think you’re making the right decision to leave, OP. This does not sound like a fun experience in the slightest.

Negating damage is incorrect. What it does it let you competely ignore the fact that you have been damaged. When you see an adrenalin fueled mother lifting a car off of a child, she doesnt have superhuman strength. Shes bypassing the limiters on her muscles and tearing them up in one drastic burst of strength. Her muscles are damaged from it.

@@andypants1062 Which is why Barbarians take a level of Exhastion after raging... Which by RAW would mean they recover that penalty OR fully heal from a long rest, but don't do both. The exhaustion in 5E is far more brutal than the same mechanic in earlier editions. And if your raging in every fight, you will accumulate levels of exhaustion that only recover once per long rest...Unless the Cleric is burning spell slots to recover hit points and reduce exhaustion, the Barbarian will be tearing himself apart if he rages every day. While hit points themselves don't strictly represent the character's physical durability, but are more an abstract analog of one's ability to stay standing in a fight. Hit point damage is not the physical damage of a wound, but its impact on one's ability to fight.

Yeah, I do the same thing. I did, however, once run an adventure set on the Plane of Heroes, an eternal battlefield where anyone who dies is resurrected at dawn. I filled that adventure with brutal challenges that were absolutely deadly if the party made one little mistake. The adventure was meant to be a puzzle-how do we get past this thing without dying? They resurrected every morning, so they effectively had infinite tries-but there were four NPC parties competing as well, so the party had to minimize their deaths to make it through the fastest and get first pick of the hoard of magic items awaiting them at the end. We had two TPKs and one case where half of the party died and the other half had to wait the rest of the day for the dead half to resurrect. That was a fun adventure.

I've played a character before whose flaw was that he was too nice and helpful (his biggest fear is that people won't like him). One time, he refused to racially profile a gorgon even after seeing her basement full of stone statues (he thought it was her personal art collection). Another time, he was helping a tribe of harpies kill a type of dream demon (forgot what it was called) and he got it into his head that it could be redeemed when he heard if cry out for help in the characters native language. He ended up becoming more of a liability than I intended for him to be and I've been very hesitant to use him again in games. Which my friend is disappointed in because, for some reason, he adores this character and is always suggesting I bring him back for another campaign. I think I'm also hesitant to do him again is because he's an exaggeration of myself in many regards. Seeing how badly my own behaviors could be twisted to invoke the very outcomes I feared the most has left me in a desperate need to reevaluate myself as a person.

  • @baydiac

    @baydiac

    Ай бұрын

The best flaws are the ones that risk jeopardizing the whole team/mission, but I agree that it's best never to let things get to that point. I think you can continue to use this character as long as they never make decisions on behalf of the rest of the party-like even if they argue with the party about whether or not they should leave the gorgon alone, they never meaningfully interfere with the party's attempts to slay her. And most of all, character flaws bring character development. It _will_ get grating if your character falls for the same trap every time, never learning a thing. Taking them on a journey of doubt (and guilt for that doubt) until they learn the lesson "Trust is a good thing, but it should be given on a case-by-case basis. Neither should you trust everyone nor trust no one, instead decide for yourself each time." is a good way to do things. (And I mean honestly if you're a gorgon sculptor and desperately want to follow your dreams without people assuming you'd killed anyone, maybe stick to marble as a medium instead of plain ol' stone. Differentiate your work a little 😂)

Like, one flaw I had for a PC, whom I never got to play was "Yes everything does, in fact, rest on my shoulders." because this was the sole survivor of their tribe that was slaughtered. Who was a child when they ran and they had guilt about that. It was a way of portraying their own promise to themselves to never not help out another in need. Slightly unrelated, this character was also a support character, so they went around buffing the party and healing others.

I had a friend who DM'd for 2 of our friends. They spent countless hours creating this world and multiple paths for their players to progress on. I'm not great at roleplaying, but I'd occasionally join sessions to voice minor NPCs and just generally help DM friend since I was the one DM bounced world-building ideas off of. Once, they ran a solo one-shot for me of something they wanted to introduce to their main game and wanted some feedback on. I always felt bad for them that they put so much work in and their players would totally bypass the blatant "call to adventure" DM would lay out for them. It seems like such a fine line to walk between session planning and player whim. Kudos to all the DMs out there who spend their time herding cats and still genuinely like their players lol

That is actually very possible. From the wording I would take both javelins did a combined 17 damage, so that would be 2x 1d6+str. From assuming rolls we can guess the gnolls strength, if the dice maxed (well, a 6 and a 5) out that would be a +3 str modifier or 16 or 17 str. On average dice rolls the str modifier would be at +5 with a minimum 20 str. The gnoll as per the statblock has 14 str, however it would be up to the DM to modify that. Another possibility is that the gnoll can attack two handed and deal 1d8+2 damage that way, and the DM might have falsely used that at range.

While the session had a lot of other issues, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one, also modifying statblocks is a good way to adjust difficulty or put a twist on known monsters so no blame in that regard.

@@ancoron8257 Modifying a stat block is a good way to make special members of a group. Or special groups by swapping a trait with another creature group. Like say swapping out Nimble Escape for Pack Tactics when making a Goblin tribe that specializes in coordinated ambushes. The old rules and monster manuals used to give stats for above average members of a group of monsters. Like one out of every 6 orcs would have max hit points. 1 out of every 20 would have more hit points, or be slightly stronger. 1 out of every 50 would be both. And so on. The thing is you only modify the actual stats of one out of a group of them to highlight that that one is different and/ or the leader. Or a small number in a large group that are different. You don't scale up the stat block of every one of them, or you might as well be homebrewing it all.

It's also a more roleplay heavy game, with skills and abilities dedicated to roleplay moments, though there is also plenty of combat options as well.

Which I was using ngrok as a 3rd party server which I haven’t had so many issues with until starting this campaign the discord server was a new server. As for the issue with my mother we have been going to group therapy so we have been more civil with each other. As for the barbarian issue it was taken out of context. I told the barbarian that had a transformation that activated when he raged for lore reasons and would be made stronger as he leveled up eventually becoming a permanent transformation.

Char gen happens as a group during session 0, following safety tools, in most of the games I run and play (at least, outside of one shots where all of that happens at the start of the session), at least for most systems.

as far as hosting foundry on third party, one of the games I'm in, the DM's isp is not ok with him hosting so he literally has to use a third party.

I have joined a game where minimal information was given in the posting but, in all fairness, it did advertise that and I applied thinking it was an interesting concept. I got accepted though it took about 3 days before I got that confirmation. And while I didn’t sit down in a voice chat, we, the players had our session 0 character creation done by the first true start of the game (a couple weeks later, as was posted) and were able to discuss with the dm the particulars of our ideas. The funny thing is that we all ended up fey. The game didn’t start with anything but a vague idea that there would be a bit of a horror genre encounter for the beginning and then move into our backstories afterwards. But we, the players, all went fey themed and so now the adventure is like if you had the Addams family but made them fey themed and it’s been a hilarious ride so far. And yes, we did sit down and discuss openly about lines and veils and how the dm and players like playing and what they were looking for. Honestly, I’m very used to taking the lead for those discussions so, even had it been neglected, I would have brought it up. And I did for this and took it as no red flags when everyone accepted and engaged. It was pretty fun, and still pretty fun. My point to this is to say that sometimes having no idea or only the vaguest of ideas isn’t a bad thing. Just make sure you advertise this and also what your skill level is so that you get the right people applying. Honestly, I was interested in applying to that simply because of the potential to collaborate and create a unique story that wasn’t a module, but entirely open. By the way, I made a hexblood dreams druid who was raised as the adoptive child of an archfey, Princess Mononoke style lol. I even helped the dm write up the antagonist to my character from their backstory and dm and I discussed how to make my character’s tool proficiencies feel like they mattered and were story relevant. So, yeah, not always a red flag but I’m sure that it usually might be. Sometimes it’s worth taking a chance to see if it is or not, if you feel up to that. I did and it worked out, that’s all.

as a new DM while i didnt jump right in same day the characters were created, i did bring them through a short arch that wasnt directly connected to backstories till the end(as they ended up near the rangers home town so i tied it in) it let me learn about the characters and how my players played and allowed me to build up the rest of the campaign and tie things in that they added after fleshing the Pcs out more. honestly recommend a short first arch before you dive into the full thing :3 least if you don't plot things out beat for beat like me XD im sure yall people know where the storys going before yall even start the game lol

Did anyone else get the skyrim bug where Alduin didn't land in the intro? That "imagine an hour of skyrim-intro"-bit made me think of it. Spent a lot of time creating a character and then some trigger in the intro failed and Alduin just... flew around while the solider stood with the axe above his head as a goof. I was curious to see if it would fix itself so I just left the xbox on while I made lunch, and nope... it did not fix itself... So I have played one hour of skyrim intro kthnxbi

  • @codyironblood

dm for that campaign here: Ian was going to have a transformation into a fire giant when he raged which would get stronger as he leveled up which he asked for it. the whole resistance bit was taken out of context along with everything else regarding the campaign. see my post from 3 days ago from posting this reply for more details. Ian was still able to get his normal resistance before he unlocked the transformation at level 3. i needed to playtest more on a lot of stuff especially modules because apparently some of the automation modules were bugging out or i didn't set them up properly.

I need to scream this: D&D. IS NOT. REALISTIC. AND IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE. WHY DO MARTIALS NEED TO BE CONSTRAINED BY REALISM TO THE POINT WHERE IT'S DETRIMENTAL?! AT HIGH LEVEL, YOU SHOULD BE A LEGENDARY HERO THAT CAN MOW DOWN AN ARMY OF NORMAL PLEBS, NOT A GUY WHO CAN'T TAKE ON A FEW DUDES IN A TAVERN. I'm exaggerating, of course, but doing something like making it so that Rage doesn't give resistance is kind of removing the whole point of the class.

I do feel a bit bad for people who see sexism and bigotry where there isn't any. There's so much if it in the world, and in gaming spaces in particular, that you can get primed to see it everywhere, and its ofter hard to rein that in and sus out who is and isn't actually being a bigoted, especially in emotional moments.
