The 2023 Tata Steel Challengers is taking place from 14-29 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. The 14-player single round-robin offers the winner an automatic place in the 2024 Tata Steel Masters.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided by two blitz (3+2) games. If still tied, the players keep playing single "sudden death" games where White gets 2.5 minutes and Black 3 minutes until one side wins. Official website: www.tatasteelchess.com

Could a native English speaker please tell me if "these" is right in this context or if it should be "those" . I know the difference is distance in time and space but kinda doesn't work here, does it? "Those" kinda sounds more right to me but idk.

@@yophono5929 "these" implies a sense of closeness and belonging whereas "those" would imply a sense of otherness. For example, when speaking of items on a table, one might say "these are my items and those are not". So in this case, as a chess community, we speak of these queen sacrifices, (and those Backgammon games).

@@yophono5929 definitely "these" sounds, in chess lingo, "more precise". "Those" would be for something distant (physically, or impersonally), something maybe you don't agree with too much. but honestly you don't even really use "those" as much as "these"

To add onto this, Eline is pronounced a-lee-nuh, with the emphasis on the first syllable. a as in made. Antonio: for Dutch pronunciations of long vowels, some tips- - 'oe' is pronounced like 'oo' in English, as in 'whoop'. So, Roebers sounds like 'Roobers'. - 'oo' is pronounced in a way that 'boot' in Dutch sounds like 'boat'. - 'ie' is pronounced like a long 'i', e.g. 'biet' in Dutch sounds like 'beat'. - 'ij' is pronounced in different ways depending on whether the person is from the Netherlands or from Belgium but to explain the Dutch way, the name 'Lijnder' would sound like 'Line-der'. - the more rare 'ae' is just pronounced like a long 'aa'. You'll often find some names spelled differently (same pronunciation): Maes & Maas, Baet & Baat, etc.

I am Dutch. The 'oe' in Roeber is pronounced like an owl in the night: 'oeh oeh, oeh oeh'. Like the proper pronunciation of that dish from Morocco: Couscous. Or, the English equavalent: when a crowd doesn't like the comedian and goes 'Boo', That's how to pronounce it. (and the 'R' in Dutch is more raw than in English; like an American 'R' combined with the roar of a pitbull (coming from the back of one's throat that is). (the sound could also be compared to someone who is terminally ill, but I like the first comparison better).
