World Champion Magnus Carlsen survived a last-round scare to draw against Ivan Saric and win the first supertournament of 2015 by half a point. That kept him just ahead of a pack of hungry young wolves - Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (who beat Fabiano Caruana), Anish Giri (who drew with Radek Wojtaszek), Wesley So (who beat Loek van Wely) and Ding Liren (who upended Levon Aronian) all finished on 8.5/13 and made it clear Carlsen will face fierce competition in the years to come. Wei Yi also drew to secure the Challengers title and a place in next year’s tournament.

Most of the times when black or white fianchetto their bishops towards the enemy's castled king, this is a recurrent theme, and one of the most annoying things to deal with as the defender. I even keep a pawn on f3 to guard against it. Or some piece on f3.

Well, not really. Such a fierce attack as to overwhelm whites defense fast. If white gets time to untangle you are dead lost, due to being down on material. If you look at the last 5 moves, in some lines black has to sacrifice two additional pieces to achieve mate. The longer the game last, the more chances white gets to defend by trading down pieces until he can find a line where black just cant throw more material into the fire.

It seems so slow and weak, in a moment where you need strong, fast attacking moves otherwise white simply goes up the exchange. And yet it's necessary to fulfill the attack, and it's just in time, and it just gives white one more tempo in which it has no good moves. So nice.

You can really see how the pieces are now more agile and can actually dodge the attacks.

If this was played against me, even if I could understand these moves as much as Levon could during the game, I’d have nightmares of being in such position and would be terrified of Anand

Superb. When two prices are hanging, offer another... simply great thought.

I can firmly say that you sir, have (and I have tried other chess channels) reinvigorated my interest in the game of chess. For that an enormous amount of thanks.

The game started a bit like Rubistein vs Rotlewi (1907) before diverting quite drastically, it's a wonderful game to know by heart! It feels complementary to the Rubistein game, jeez it feels like an even sharper game.
