Sharpening a Samurai Sword by Hand

cbilton.creator-spring.com In this video I finally attempt to sharpen a sword I've had for many years.
It has such a beautifully polished blade that I always assumed it was a cheap base metal that's been polished then heavily plated.
Choosing to keep the blade in its lovely finish I decided not to sharpen it and reveal the ugly coloured metal beneath and so it remained a blunt ornamental piece.
Recently I picked it up and once again felt bugged about it being blunt and after owning it for over 20 years now I thought what the hell and filed the blade a little. I was pleasantly suprised to find the blade is actually steel! Certainly not a weapons grade steel but it meant I could get it sharp without feeling like im ruining it a little.
It was sharpened with what I had available at home at the time so my methods may not be the best!

    A couple suggestions: painters tape or masking tape can be used to protect the rest of the blade while working on the edge. Also, since that stone appears to have been bone dry, I'd have soaked it in some water beforehand, then kept a small container of water next to it to keep it wet. 👍

    That poor sword i am sure you could find someone near you who could sharpen it correctly and if not i am sure there are a few volunteers to sharpen it for you in your community including but not limited to me😅

    I actually have two of these that my brothers father bought overseas. Same design on the blades but different sheath and one blade is smaller than the other. Also a different hilt ring but other than that same hilt and designs on the blades!

    fun fact, these are actually Wakizashi, a smaller sword than a katana, usually samurai would carry either a katana and a wakizashi or a katana and a tanto

    15 degree angle and 3-6 slides for different grain that is recipe for sharpening on stones I saw. Plus also water. Probably there’s much difference between sharpening Katana like this compare to standard one.

    Not this way, use a wet stone 600-1000-3000 grit

    Technically he did use a whetstone since back then "whet" meant to sharpen not to mix it up with the other wet

    A real Japanese sword is zero ground and has no secondary edge bevel like you've added. Normally the entire flat surface of the bade is ran across the stones to polish it. That being said you did the best you could on your replica sword. Good work slaying those water bottles.

    Quite amusing to see you as a sword polisher. So good that this sword is not a real samurai sword. To be educated as a japanese sword polisher takes between 6 and 10 years. Handling a real sword requires a special etiquette not only form but considerably to handle the sword with respect in a save and secure way, i.e. to protect you and to protect the sword. You always draw the sword with the mune (back) down and the edge above. In that way you prevent the edge from being damaged. Real swords are so sharp and you always avoid to touch the blade. I can recommend learning more about japanese swords and japanese culture as well. I can see from your excellent videos that you often describes the meeting between western and japanese culture. Thanks for your great efforts to pass on your skills. Skills are most appreciated in Japan as well.

    You should use the stone in your hand and slide it along the blade both sides different grade stones you wouldn't have marked tha blade

    The wet stone should be maintain the moisture every 3 strokes 15° angle mate. That's why you ruined the finish of your blade. And 4-6lbs of pressure should be apply while sharpening. After every 3-5 slides from bottom to top. Use the back of your wetstone for fine grinding. I'm not an expert but i'm a blade enthusiast Just learned from trials and error thru time. I did what you have done on the vid before and it ruined my 50 dollar wall hanger katana hehe

    How the wobbly line comes into life is actually the basis or result better of how real katanas are built. In mallversions they simply use acid.

    Wow the comment guys are rough!!!. I think it should be just one way and as another one suggested I think wethstones should be used for it. haven't tried. I also would like to sharpen a mall katana I have thats why im watching the vid haha

    They're cheap enough to experiment on! I was very careless sharpening this blade but with a proper whetstone, giving your self time and working carefully I think anyone could do a good job

    Great vid 😢but, omg that’s a practice katana only, lol 😂 and it wasn’t really meant for sharpning. The kind of edge you put on that piece was a secondary bevel.

    When metal gets to hot it gets to soft to sharpen. You spoiled it.

    Don't waste your time on an ornamental blade, that thing is cheap alloy from its look. When you do sharpen a proper steel blade you need a wet stone.

    Chris, using a wood rasp on a katana is not the proper way to sharpen it; such tools should never be used on any metal knife. Firstly, you need a high-quality sharpening stone, not the inferior one you have. You should use a water stone for wet sharpening. The best course of action is to seek professional help. Take your sword to a specialist in Japan-there are many-who can assist you with the sharpening. You must stop what you're doing immediately before the sword is damaged irreparably. The very sight of you using that wood rasp on the sword was utterly disconcerting; it's simply not done.
