    man, i bet this was frustrating responding to these assholes in the comment section over the years. Cracks me up. all these master blacksmiths, sword sharpeners/polishers, masters of kenjutsu etc. plus i bet their swords are cheaper than those and they cappin like they have something special when its a cookie cutter katana made in longquan just like ours lol - self awareness is lackin in them. i just wanted to give ya props for being a trooper despite the window lickers

    On the cheap swords yes, okay. It puts a bevel edge on the Katana. To correct the antique (if someone ever wants to do it) it will need lots of metal removed to correct it during a correct "polishing."

    To quote Jeff Goldbloom "They spent so much time thinking if they could but didn't think if they should." A katana is a single edged sword. To sharpen it you literally polish the entire side of the sword on the wet stone. There is no bevel to the edge and to create one is to destroy the swords edge geometry. This is the laziest and most incorrect way to sharpen a katana, even an inexpensive one.

    I'm glad it helped man! I realize it's not the "correct" way to sharpen, but it sure beats a steel stick, lol. Just be careful to keep your blade touching the lateral side of the guards when using that WorkSharp, & you may want to tape the guards where your blade touches with painters tape or something like it to prevent scratches. Thanks for commenting Mark & take care!

    Just happened on this video, Joey. I'm always interested to see the Work Sharp in action. I had the chance to pick up an expensive and rare pedal (Skreddy Screw Driver) to use with my Teles and Strats. Couldn't let it slip through my hands. I bought it from a dealer in Southern California. It came dear with the Canadian dollar what it is at exchange. I've been after this pedal for more than a year. Unfortunately, I've been set back to waiting on the purchase of the Work Sharp - think I'll go for the Ken Onion model.

    This is not how you sharpen a katana. The edge is supposed to be single with no bevel. This is putting a secondary edge on the sword like it's a kitchen knife.

    I mean, it's y'all's swords, you do what you want with them, but this could wreck a blade. I might do this on a $150 musashi sword or something, but no way I'd do it on a sword that I dropped some serious coin on, or care about.

    that really hurts, a Katana is not grinded but polished to be sharp

  • @1810jeff

    @1810jeff

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes but it's not like it's a traditionally made katana or anything. The whole one bevel makes them a pain to sharpen plus part of the reason why a katana is polished to sharpen is because of the hamon having to be redone after sharpening but if you grind in a bevel it will only marginally affect the cutting ability, make it easier to sharpen and it won't undo the hamon assuming it's not one that was polished with ferric chloride or any other etch.

I have 2 katana swords and I made the same miste as you(luckily on the cheaper one) I Used that stupid accu sharp or whatever. It scratches up the edge more than I would like.

    Very informative video. Although I don't recommend doing this to a high end katana (mainly for cosmetic reasons), it looks like a quick and inexpensive method to put a good edge on a backyard beater. My only concern is what the heat, generated by the friction of the belt sander, does to the hardness of the edge. Doesn't it unintentionally temper the edge and lower its hardness?

  • @pinkbrisingr78

    @pinkbrisingr78

    8 жыл бұрын

    Quick answer, nope. The blade doesn't even get that warm. I've never heard anything about these brands heat treat process. The only way, IMHO, the treat will be affected is if it was done poorly in the 1st place. I use it for only machetes, axes, ect. They all chop & hack longer now bc the convex edge. TAKE THE GUARD OFF & FREEHAND smaller blades btw. Thanks & take care.

I just would say get the finest grit belt you can depending on which Work Sharp you have if you have the key onion version use the finest grit belts on that one and try to hold the sword as steady as possible if you have the old one same thing. The best thing is to bring it to a Japanese swordsmith haha I don't have one around here! God bless

    It depends on the katana. If it's monosteel these tools are fine. If its differentially hardened the steel after the hamon is soft and scratches easily so you need to sharpen then polish which takes 5 types of stone and several days to do. If it's antiq just don't touch it.

    Justin Wright Yeah, I have heard all about what the Ken Onion Edition can do! But I would rather use my hands more on the sharpening part and then strop at different grits. I don't know...something about that friction from fast belts it can just remove a lot of steel for a novice. I would only use it for machetes swords and inexpensive fixed blades but that is just my opinion. I'm too picky about keeping my knives in good shape even though I use them. If someone was to give me one, well that might change to a little different story LOL! Thanks!!

    Just sharpened my Cold Steel Katana. Crane 800 euros or something. Taped the blade from scrathing but is was not even needed. My Works Shaps is the basic cheap one, something like 90 euros. Worked great! Tried it first to few knifes from fletching knifes to butterfly knives etc. :D All came up pretty more than good. Scaling 1/10 i have to say it always a solid 8. Even swords it is and 8. You can hand sharpen better but you really have to put time, skill and effort to that one. Now i just use the machine and hand sharper more if it is needed to real razor sharp. Do not get me wrong 8 is sharp as hell and sharper than literally 9/10 of you can ever sharpen a blade by hand.

    The last samurai sword looked like a mechanical wire brushed hamon, while the second one with "factory hamon" looks like it was a chemical etched. Two of the cheapest ways to imitate a hamon. I'd be willing to bet you could find a good combo between the work sharp and a Japanese water stone to break the top edge made by the work sharp. While I would use this on my through hardened cheapie cutter, I would never let my differentially hardened katana or Damascus touch that machine. Once the blade edge geometry is ground away, it'll be hall reshaping it to completely smooth continuation from edge to spine. The katana is shaped like this to facilitate low drag through your cut. Good video and decent collection you've got.

    이치고 Correct! A neighbor of mine ruined the heat treat on a machete because he used an angle grinder. He could get it razor sharp, 10 minutes after bushwhacking it would roll and be dull as a board practically. Failure to keep the blade cool will ruin it. Without a doubt, this would also affect a Katana of decent quality with a tempered high carbon steel blade.

    You can't sharpen a katana like this you just destroyed the cutting edge .to get this sword back to its original state would take days of hand sharpening now which s what you should have done in the first place . There is no tapered Edge to a katana the blade runs to strate down to the Edge.

    A katana is to be water wheel stone sharpening so the heat treatment on the edge is not fucked up by sharpening. That's how they do it in china and that's how they do it in japan. Using a grinder or a sanding belt will greatly damage a sword or knife, reducing its functionality and value tremendously.
