I used to work with a frequently drunk Scottish 'gentleman' at a machine shop. He always wanted to argue and fight. He would always look behind him and ask whoever was there, "Ya baaack meh Uuup?" It was always good for a laugh because he wanted somebody more sober to fight for him. I felt more sorry for his drinking buddies!

As an Army officer, Sharpe isn't in the (East India Company) Sergeant's chain of command, that's why his order is being challenged. Well, apart from the Sergeant being an unconvincingly stupid bully, that is. The other thing that grates with me is calling him Bickerstaff; the Sergeant of that name in "Sharpe's Tiger" was a well-respected NCO with a native wife.

Historically speaking, British NCO's of the 19th Century could be quite brutal to soldiers under their watch, regardless of their color. This was done either with the officers turning a blind eye to it or with their tacit approval. It would be very rare for an officer to admonish a sergeant for this, or psychically assault him. If a sergeant went too far, it was usually his soldiers who would deal with him, either during a battle of late at night when he was sleeping.

@ it isn't him, but the last 2 episodes were composites of Cornwell's books about Sharpe in India. Sharpe's Triumph, Sharpe's Fortress and Sharpe's Tiger. In Tiger he fights Obadiah after the sergeant provokes him and gets his 200 lashes and in Fortress and Triumph he goes up against Dodd.

I have not yet seen this episode, so there could be a reason but, it is hard to contemplate any non-officer, even a veteran Sergeant giving an officer lip, let alone threaten one during this time period. I would imagine that even today, it would only be for a very strong reason.
