I met Pete Postlethwaite in 2007 in his local garage in Church Stretton, Shropshire, he did a little video for me congratulating me on the birth of my 1st son & commenting on his name, in response to another video doing the same by Johnny Vegas! RIP Pete, hope you're enjoying a nice Guinness in heaven.

@@ThePostalGril Perhaps you're forgetting Teresa's backstory? She was raped by the French before. Not only would I imagine she specifically learned how to defend against it in the future, but she also has a particular hatred for rapists. There is more to fighting back than size and strength. I'm not saying it's easy, far from it, but even the biggest, toughest guy has weaknesses that can be exploited. Throat, eyes, groin etc. Men aren't 'superheroes' any more than women are, whatever they'd like us to think. They NEED to see women fighting back, no matter how realistic it may or may not be. They need to see other men NOT getting away with it. The media's traditional portrayal of women as weak and helpless has given men a dangerous sense of dominance, which needs to be corrected. Teach them to be better people. Reinforce the idea of consequences, because if common decency isn't enough to stop them then maybe fear would be. I bet they'd think twice if they thought there was even a remote danger of getting their eyes gouged out or their precious little cocks cut off, however unlikely that is in real life.

For context, Obadiah was Sharpe's old sergeant from back when he was a young enlisted and the one who caused him to be flogged (202 lashes, but was meant to be 2000 which was a death sentence but the punishment was interrupted). He tried to kill Sharpe several times at least, and Sharpe I think managed to lock him in with some tigers in India (he survived through sheer luck) then showed up here years later...which is why Sharpe mentioned his inability to die.

Sharpe also tried to kill him with an elephant but somehow he escaped, that was after Hakeswill tried to arrest him on also charges of assaulting an officer but on the warrant the e at the end of Sharpes name had smugged & so the Colonel he gave the warrant to told him he had the wrong Sharpe, Hakeswill then killed the Colonel during a battle and then tried again but this time there was no Sergeant Sharpe as he had been promoted to Ensign, the look on his face would of been amazing to see.

Obadiah was standing just behind Sharpe as he was being flogged so he could see all of Sharpe’s suffering. At one point I believe Obadiah said something like this..” I can see a rib….Sharpie… “. Then the flogging got stopped. Yes, as mentioned above, Sharpe tried two times to kill Obadiah. Once he left him for Hungary tigers to eat and the second he had a elephant to place its hoof on to crush him but didn’t stay to see it through. Sharpe left to animals a job that only he could do. I’ve read the first two books…not sure if I’m going to read three. The books are incredibly written and accurate, documenting historically the English wars in India.

The Napoleonic Wars brought out the best and the worst in the men of the British Army. You have to remember that back in the 18th and 19th centuries, the British Army drew its enlisted ranks from the lower strata of society. These were not necessarily men of moral, ethical, and spiritual character. Many had grown up and lived on the meaner streets of London and other major cities of England. Personal survival, at whatever cost and to whom, played first priority in these men's lives. They would take their amoral and oft antisocial behaviors with them into the British Army. Only the sternest and sometimes draconian British military discipline could keep these men in line. The French Foreign Legion faced the same and also countered with ferocious discipline to make workable soldiers out of feral or predatory men.

He'd skillfully gotten me to emotionally and mentally invest in the character he was playing. Few actors possess his ability and I was happy when I first heard Spielberg laud Pete's praises, then De Caprio confess he often asked Pete's advice on how to deliver his lines in the role of Romeo. But him dying makes him great. If he would just continue to escape through the whole series it would become comical that he just gets away against all the odds and somehow stays relevant even though Sharp raises though the ranks.

I love the myriad expressions on sharpe's face. Confusion at why harper called him, for a second it seems to be amusement as he realises harper or theresa have kicked shite into a soldier, and then shock leading to hate at seeing the soldier was hakeswill and his attempted 'enjoyment' of theresa.

A man like Obadiah would never survive so long. He would meet with an "accident" in the field and be "lost." A wise man knows the dispose of the evidence of evil, and that's why it is always smart to keep your knives sharp (no pun intended) so as to better hide the stain of filth.
