Sharpe Escorts Marie-Angelique In His Final Quest | Sharpe

Ойын-сауық

Whilst still missing his past life, Sharpe reluctantly agrees to travel to the hill fort of Kalimgong with Patrick and Marie-Angelique.
From Sharpe's Peril: On their way home to England, Richard Sharpe and Patrick Harper reluctantly agree to escort Marie-Angelique Bonnet to the hill fort of Kalimgong, where her fiancé, Major Joubert is stationed. They encounter a baggage train heading to Madras, made up of soldiers from the King's and the East India Company's armies, commanded by the young Ensign Beauclere, engineer Major Tredinnick, and Subedar Pillai.
Arriving at Kalimgong, Sharpe and Harper find the entire garrison killed, with the exception of the fort's commander, General Sir Henry Simmerson, Sharpe's old enemy. Strung up naked in the courtyard, Simmerson's mind is addled with the heat and he seems to only speak nonsense, such as "save the harvest." Major Joubert is not among the dead, to Marie-Angelique's relief, but neither are the Company ledgers that reveal what has been stolen from the fort. The Subedar dies.
Continuing on, the train finds a farming village destroyed by bandits, the entire harvest stolen, and everyone dead but a young girl who witnessed the attack. Between what the girl saw and Simmerson's addled ramblings, Sharpe realises that not only were these people growing opium for the Company, but Colonel Count Dragomirov and Major Joubert were responsible for the slaughter in the village and at Kalimgong, using bandits as scapegoats.

This scene was a take-off of a real incident with President Calvin Coolidge at a social event. A lady came up to the notoriously taciturn man and told him that she had bet her friends that she could make him say at lest three words. "You lose," was his reply.

some rich developer hear my idea and take this wonderful series as it's inspiation: the nemesis system in games, namely Middle Earth: Shadow of War and the earlier Shadow of Mordor. that relies purely on court intrigue, upon which all could come secondary, combat, romance etc etc. if dont without the same useless rinse/repeat it could be the most wonderful storytelling game. British in India, Romans in Egypt... whatever... the best getaway from life itself.

Old comment, but for anyone curious, Sharpe's Peril, along with Sharpe's Challenge, whose events take place right before Peril, take place in 1817. Sharpe was has been promoted to Colonel by the time of Peril.

It's a convention anyway.. even Lt Cols are addressed 'Colonel' so the actual rank doesn't matter, albeit after Waterloo he probably did go up a rank to full Colonel.

Sgt with the East India Company more than likely. Almost equivalent to a modern PMC just with less oversight and a license to be an extra arm of the British state in India until it's collapse.
