When we talk about Women's History Month it's important to mention Sharonne Salaam who before April 19,1989 was working in the Garment District. She had graduated from FIT and was going about her business in the rag trade. She never had contact with the police or the courts. But after the arrest of her son and four other young men, she has turned into a staunch supporter of young people who are now incarcerated. She is now an advocate for prison and human rights at her organization Justice 4 The Wrongfully Incarcerated, where she has worked on policy and legislation in the hope that no other child will have to go through the same injustice that your son had to endure. I had the great pleasure to attend her son's press conference where Yusef Abdus Salaam announced his bid for a Harlem Council seat and I was able to record her remarks.
