As Conan said: being around people who cannot register sarcasm is the lowest level of hell. Sarcasm is a huge portion of my personality and vocabulary. Being told by superiors at my place of employment that coworkers don't appreciate my sense of humor is like having my eyes sucked out of my head. I think I'd rather work for free around people who reciprocate sarcasm than be paid to endure a humorless environment.

This is a genuine problem for Brits and Irish in America, generally speaking, because real dry sarcasm just doesn’t land. The same as a lot of real cringe humour doesn’t work and metaphor and innuendo aren’t used nearly as much etc

Sarcasm is as necessary as breathing. But it sounded like the individual who told Conan they couldn’t register sarcasm had a condition of some sort … maybe on the autism spectrum?

I live in the UK and am part Irish. I love watching this. I totally relate to many things they are saying, but I never had this perspective before. Thank you for the enlightenment, makes me think about my family in a whole new light.

How they *may* think or respond and why. To put it in simple words, that even you can understand: You can learn about cultures from other people.

Are we even allowed to use the term waitress now? I've been slapped on the wrist for referring to female thespians as actresses (instead of actors). The term "comedienne" - female comedian - also appears to have bit the dust. I guess we'll soon have to refer to waiters and waitresses as "waiting persons". Or maybe "table service operatives".

@@comment15 It may not be a big deal to the average man (or woman!) in the street (why are average people always in the street?), and perhaps least of all to the average literary challenged American in the street, but to someone like me - a professional writer and wordsmith with a degree in English an a lifelong interest in semantics, linguistics and etymology - the bastardization of the English language is a very big deal. It isn't a matter of me using the words I want other people to use, it's a matter of other people using words I don't want them to use.

The English spoken today is completely different than the past and it will forever be transforming. Etymology 101. If you understand what a person means, then that's the most fundamental part - if you correct them even though you know what they mean, then that's being purposefully pugnacious.

Conan probably sensed that rom-com energy, so he mocked it with that affair joke, but it backfired because maybe she didn't get his sense of humor, and she made it weird so Conan implied that she's not very bright then she flogged Conan by saying that she didn't find the joke funny. The joke was very good.

Watching a bit of Whalburgers I was shocked they treated Mark like he was some A list celeb coming to town and not doing like these guys are saying and treating him like he's nothing special to bring him back to reality and humble him like every Irish family does. I have always used sarcasm as a staple of my humor, and now I live in Thailand. This culture does not use sarcasm at all. They are very straightforward and literal, even in comedy. The loss of my ability to use humor is perhaps the hardest thing I have had to endure here. Besides the fact that they undercook bacon.

Thailand's humor is one of the best in the region. Their adverts are now in the hall of fame in major award giving bodies. Just because you lost your ability to use your humor doesn't make theirs any less. It's not just your cup of tea.

Having worked in the service industry for 10+ years I can absolutely agree with this! Ive always found Americans particularly hard to read. You never know if they literally are about to explode over something minor, or if they are joking about it.

I promise you almost no one goes into airplane mode and nothing is affected

Did they not look into the airplane mode thing and turned out it wasn't actually an issue?, as in it's theoretically possible on older planes but as long as it's a newer plane with shielding on the wires it was ok. I could swear there was a study or something about it. I can totally believe they would still ask for them to be turned off for some kind of safety reason. just to be sure but i don't think it's the life or death situation people think it is, , has a phone ever actually caused an serious issue on a plane?
