TYING THE SHARK KNOT I learned land based shark fishing in the early 60's from an older guy who fished Padre Island and Port Aransas. He was Chris Page. Most Port A old timers knew him. He taught schook theee and ran one of the Cats at Fishermans Warf. The line we used mosr was 150 lb test braided nylon, preferably made by Ashaway. We used the same double line clinch knot as you did up to the point where you clinched it. We did not pull so much of The doubkr line bight through the clinch. And we tied an overhand knot in the tag end of the single line, then using that single tag end took that tag end tied it back to the double line loop you bit off so there was now way the surf pounding could loosen the knot and makevit fail. Next we took strechy electrical tape and wrapped back from your single line 150 lb mono forward toward to the swivel and past to the leader, which was 3/32 nds 7x49 strand SS cable ~25 ft long. That way the line can't wrap back on the cable and cutyou off. If we are fishing with shells or othee things in the water,we put a 3x6 inch balsa float attached to the top swivel. If we were fishing from the S. jetty or pier we attached a cross piece on a swivel 6 to 8 ft from the hooks and used electricle tape to keep it straight also. On the jetty, the cross piece was a nail 10 to 20 penny (nail size =d) sticking through the loop formed by a swivel ar thar point. On the North jetty, i used a sail line to put my bait out. A simple clothespin type outrigger snap set the lkeader free as a floating bait or bottom rig. My jetty PB was an 11 ft even plain old tiger shark. We were fishing serious baits and 10/O to 16/O reels full of 150-200 lb test nylon braid. My best sharks were caufht on a Penn 14/O reel. My PB beach shark was a 10 ft 9" sand tiger, the first ever recorded by science in the Western Gulf. I gave the jaws to the UT Marine Institute, Port A. FYI Western Gulf sand tigers have no markings on their sides as the ones on the Gulf Coast of Florida and the Atlantic have. Shark fishermen caught 3 smaller ones one night at Indian Point Pier neat Portland, TX. All sand tigers.
