    @plantsbymelissa You got me started on my moss pole journey. I'm currently propping some marble cuttings to put on a pole after seeing how lovely yours is, and I have a "Hawaiian" pothos on a pole already and she's sizing up nicely, and I'm thinking about putting a "regular " golden pothos on a pole just to see if it is any different from a Hawaiian. My cebu isn't sizing up though. In your experience does a cebu take longer to start sizing up?

    OMG Melissa I messed up! I did a moss pole like you not long ago from one of your old video and I used potting soil. I did add lots of perlite but I used Frog sotting soil. The blue bag one. Bat Gamo in it etc. Then put my moss pole in it. Yikes. I do need to do another one so this time I using a very airy mix like you. I want big leaves on my Pothos. It is beautiful that I took cuttings from. They are rooted and ready. So VERY GLAD YOU DID THIS!!! Thank you! Learning.....

    Great informative video!! I started three golden vines (about the same lengh as yous) on a pole mid June. The leaves were tiny! I am shocked at how fast it has grown and sized up!! I have it on my porch, morning south/east facing sun. Our high heat in Northern California, with daily pole watering, didn't faze it. It's almost to the top of it's 4 foot pole. The leaves have tripled in size!!

    Thank You. Great Video! I have studied Moss Poles for the past couple of months. I'm not ready for one just yet, but I may try it in the future. A lot of people are going to the plastic poles like you showed in the video, but others need the sturdiness of the wire poles for tall poles and heavy plants. The Leca Queen adds a metal rod to her poles for support. I do want to find a way to securely anchor the pole and pot so that they do not tip over and so that the pole is straight. It will drive me crazy if it leans. LOL I have some ideas on that and watering them. I always seem to be creating and trying out ideas to solve problems. I appreciate all your comments. Right now, I am finding that some of the soil that I have, when thoroughly watered on plants that need to dry out and then be given a good soak and drained are holding too much water causing overwatering problems. Despite using a potting mix, cactus mix and lots of perilite -50% or more. So, I need to rethink things a bit and change my soil to more of an aeroid mix with the bark, etc. I find that most everyone I watch on you tube is using an aeroid mix. I am retired and the past few months I have been getting back into my plants, expanding, learning, and studying lots of videos. Your videos are in my top list. I have some Golden Pothos that a friend gave me-had some leaves 3-4" or more. I did single leaf cuttings and propagated them in water. The 1st 6 I did have been in a pot for a few weeks and I am finally having some new leaves pop up!!! I have 2 jars full of cuttings that I am ready to pot t very soon-again single leaf cuttings. I am going to try more of an aeroid mix to put them in. I also have some little leaves in water for some kind of Monstera, I have to ask my friend again, what kind it is. Small leaves 2 and 3", so I have a lot of TLC to give this one. Best of all I am having a great time with my plants!!!! 🙂

  • @plantsbymelissa

    @plantsbymelissa

    I'm so happy you are getting back into plants again! That is the most important thing is that you are just having fun with the hobby! Definitely give a aroid mix a go :) You have to get used to watering it differently and that all depends on your specific environment but the plants love the aeration! As far as moss poles go - you just have to do one. It won't be perfect but you'll learn so much in the process of what to do and what not to do and what you like, etc. I thought I knew what I was doing back in the day but I really had no clue lol. You'll be so happy once it starts growing and it's a great feeling of accomplishment too! I can't describe it but it's just incredible to watch them grow like this 🥰

Can i just repot in and fasten the vines to the moss pole no problem and it will eventually grow into the moss and upwards? Or am i better off taking cuttings from the plant and creating a new plant? Thank you! hmm, I haven't tried a pole pulling it to the back of the pot. I always center them and it seems to have great stability that way. Once the roots grow into the soil you can't move it around unless you unpot it but even then you will have a lot of roots that have grown. You can definitely fill the pole and base however you want to and whatever method works for you. I just find this way easier for me :)

    Hi Melissa! Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial. I love your videos and all the valuable insights you share with us freely. I do have a question thou. I have am existing golden pothos that growing well and I attach it around a coconut husk pole (this is before I discovered moss pole). So the leaves are not growing any bigger and I think the pole is too hard for the arial roots to anchor into it. My question is can I simply transfer my plant and replace the coconut husk pole with moss pole? Will it work or I need to start fresh with cuttings? Thanks for your inputs and advise!!! ❤

    I did the same thing. Just gently pull the roots off the coir pole then feed them through the moss pole. They will attach easily if you use velcro or grafting tape to secure the plant to the pole. Now I have leaves bigger than my head! And already extended it! I did this the end of May. I hope you have good luck!

    @@maryperry5910 thanks for your advise. I think I realised what I did wrong. I am twirling my pothos around the pile instead of attaching them in a straight line. 😉 I will do as you suggest, but will have to trim them coz they are too long. Do you think the existing leaves will grow larger if the arial roots grow and anchor themselves into the moss??

  • @plantsbymelissa

    @plantsbymelissa

    8 ай бұрын

    Hi! Thank you so much! You can definitely do what Mary suggested or you can start over with cuttings on a new pole. It's really up to you! The existing leaves will stay the size they are now. So if you have longer vines, only the new growth will grow bigger. If you want larger leaves to grow more quickly then you will probably want to start over with cuttings so they can really grow into the moss. The coir poles usually only provide support and they aren't damp so the plants can have a harder time attaching to it and climbing to mature ☺️

    Repotting my pothos for the first time when i came across this video. So it's stated in the video that you want to train your pothos on that moss thingy early...so what does that mean for a full grown mature pothos? Can they be trained to climb? Or are they too set in their ways? Is it best to leave her growing the way shes been? Her vines are just so long and im new to this, she was my dads and he gave her to me for my new apartment, since my lease says i cant have a pet. Oh, and would you recommend miracle grow pour and feed singles for a pothos plant? Thanks for reading, looking forward to learning the tricks n trades so I dont end up killing my green beauty!

I have a Philodendron Maximum on a pole and it’s doing amazing but the leaves are driving me crazy cause they keep wanting to turn backwards almost, away from the front of the pole. Any tips? Sometimes I use some elastic string to position the vines closer together! I've done that for multiple plants behind me it helps with the internodal spacing and it brings them closer to the pole so it saves space too. The string I use is clear so you can't really notice it but it's annoying to tie haha. I have to mess with it for awhile to get it to work right. You can use craft string too or anything that you can find. The leaves may look a little weird at first but once you get the vines positioned right they'll move again towards the light. I'll link what I use here: www.amazon.com/dp/B07MTZX8BC?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzmeli0992-20&creativeASIN=B07MTZX8BC&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.27D4Z5CKST4WL&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d_asin

I gave up multiple times after trying and I finally just tied the first one somewhat successfully last night! I used that green stretchy fabric gardening tie but clear elastic string would be much better cause the thick green tie is an eyesore! Ty!

    Of course! Happy to share! You can definitely add a small plant to a moss pole :) I would make sure to loosen the soil and get all the roots down far enough in the pot and fill up with your chunky mix. Then attach any vines that have grown close to the pole like I did here and it will start climbing in no time. Established plants are sometimes better to do than cuttings because their root system is more developed so it won't take them as long to situate in the pot!

    aww good luck!! Some cuttings don't make it - it happens to me all the time! It's why I like to do a few just in case :) The more roots they have the better they will transition. I like getting the roots far enough down in the pot so as the soil is drying - the cuttings won't dry up. Water roots can withstand the soil being a little extra moist at first but if they dry up and you water again - they can rot. The chunky mix allows for a lot of aeration and traps in moisture too which encourages stronger roots to grow. When the soil is too dense it leads to little to no airflow so when it stays moist, it causes rot. So the soil mix itself, the soil moisture and amount of roots all play a big role! Make sure the plant can get some good light too! Hope that helps! 🫶
