Nice one Rusti. A tip for next time you use fibre board for gasket paper. That board is not very resistant to oil and breaks up eventually. What you can do is make a weak solution with methelated spirits and shellak, soak the cut casket in the stuff until saturated and allow to dry. This will make a much better sealant against oil. Worked on my motorbikes so it should work for your late projects.

@@jimdean7335The video by Geoffrey Croker references a magazine article. This was 'Gear Cutting With The Shaper' by someone writing under the nom de plume of 'Base Circle'. The article appeared in the September the fourteenth issue of Model Engineer magazine. It is available online. There are other videos on gear cutting in the shaper. All require a jig. Michel's jig requires a gear of the same number of teeth as that being cut or a factor thereof but there are other methods of acheiving this.

I though you might drill a couple more holes in the last cover, on the side facing the camera and through the tabs there. tap the tabs and have a place to put some hold-down screws. may still be a good idea to keep the cover from rattling. Lathe is nice and quiet, why mess with something nice? Also, I always suspected there would be a use for old printers. Nice job as always!!!

I like that gear cutting fixture. Very handy. I'm curious if you have ever tried to cut internal splines with the shaper. I ask because I have a project that I need to cut 6 straight sided internal splines and I am thinking I might be able to do this on the shaper. Indexing it, though, will be my biggest challenge.
@532bluepeter1

You can index with a jig similar to Michel's. Mount a gear on the same shaft of the jig having teeth in a multiple of 6 und rig up a detent to engage with the existing gear teeth

That was a good fix on the gears Michel. A few questions: It looks like a lot of work in your gear cutting jig. Can you grind you shaper tool to the involute profile for the gear and just cut the teeth without the blank rotating? Did you find out where that ring went in the gear box?

I've never seen shaper gear cutting before. That's a wonderful technique and although it requires a gear for copying it doesn't need a tooth-specific cutter . Speed-wise, how does it compare to cutting teeth on the mill? I probably wouldn't have bothered tapping and screwing, drilling across the press fit boundary and pinning would have been fine. Damn fine fix overall, though.

Lovely Michael

"I'll be back." - Arnold Schwarzenegger LOL I'll be back too!

If I see that the cover doesn hold, I will make some changes.
Gday Rustinox, brilliant results, the gearbox sounded very quiet, I think you picked up a good buy with that lathe, cya next week mate, cheers

@532bluepeter1

You can index with a jig similar to Michel's. Mount a gear on the same shaft of the jig having teeth in a multiple of 6 und rig up a detent to engage with the existing gear teeth

That's a very interesting question. I don't know yet, but I will come up with something and let you know.
Lots of comments saying great gear cutting video; and I agree. But could do with a follow up video at the blackboard explaining the intricacies of it all. Has remnants of a 5 axis CNC machine doing its thing, lol.

The auto advance of the gear cutter with the rack seems like some sort of sorcery! Thanks for sharing 👍 🇬🇧

Rusti, good afternoon. Do you eat Breakfast cereal, if you do look no further for gasket material because a cereal box makes good gaskets especially with a smear of grease on the sealing joints.🙂

The gaskets I had to make are larger than an average cereal box. That's why.
Hi Rusti, great jo and of corse with a big satisfaction, My lathe was in bad status when I bougjt it so I did the works like you are and is a tremendous satisfaction in this kind of job, keep going Michael.

It's indeed very satisfying.
That was a good fix on the gears Michel. A few questions: It looks like a lot of work in your gear cutting jig. Can you grind you shaper tool to the involute profile for the gear and just cut the teeth without the blank rotating? Did you find out where that ring went in the gear box?

I will make a seperate video where I explane shaping grears in more detail. And indeed, I did find the correct place for the ring.
The gear cutting looks fine. How do you "step" teeth when one teeth is ready?

Thanks Stefan. It's not magic. It's go for it.
They are wonderful machines but, they are a bit fragile on the gear box. Be sure the clutch on the lead screw is in good condition...Because if the clutch is not working properly, you will have to make new gears!!!!☹ Good luck😉

Hi Michel, that gear cutting sequence on the shaper was magnificent 👌👌. Just curious, how long did it take to cut? Well worth keeping printer parts, you made good use of it. Just as well you remembered before putting back together!! Have a great weekend!!

Thanks David. I think it takes about the same time as doing it on a milling machine.
Rusti, sorry for this off topic question 🤔 I have recently got an old deckel fp1 from 1938 .. I suspect that something is obstructing the Z movement in the lowest position (towards the floor) .. seems my z travel should be another 50mm or so ... can you include a picture of your deckel in it's lowest z position so I can see how it is supposed to be? sorry for hijacking this, but I don't know how to contact you I hope you don't mind. thank you for sharing your knowledge 😁👍👌

No need to apologise. It's absolutely not off topic. The total travel up and down is 340mm. So it's easy to check. I hope this helps.
