I actually hit an Amish horse and buggy around Lancaster, Pa. I came over the top of a hill doing around 45mph and suddenly a horse a buggy appeared on the other side of the hill. There was no on-coming traffic so I cut the wheel hard to left and hit the back “drivers side” of the buggy. The giant buggy wheel was still stuck in my cars front end which flipped the buggy over. Luckily there was only 1 Amish man in the buggy and he was thrown out the window when I took his buggy wheel off doing 45mph. He was happiest that nothing happened to his horse which he had for 12 years. My insurance had to buy him a new buggy … $8K in case you’re wondering lol

The Anabaptist movement was a product of Switzerland in the 16th century. They believed that the traditional practice of baptizing babies didn't make sense and thought a commitment like that should be an adult decision. Joseph Amman was the found, and guy named Mennon founded Mennonites, and a Hutter did the Hutterites. The adult baptism, I speculate, is the motivation for the Rumspringer, which is one of the coolest facets of their religion. I love the Amish!

In Minnesota we had an Amish community nearby. The blankets and other stuff they sold, all great stuff. I was always sure to try to avoid talking about stupid stuff they didn't care about. "Do you guys play Mario Bros 3?" I'm glad I was a shade smarter than that. Rumspringa was always a fun time around my area because they liked to find small towns to hit the bars so they could blend in and not get messed with. They got ripped and told to leave and they'd go out and vomit, rally and head to the next place that would serve them. Luckily we only had 3 bars in my town and two were owned by one guy and the other was a VFW. And no alcohol sales on Sundays... even now.

You must be talking about the area around Harmony... I grew up in Decorah, and had family in Rochester, Duluth, and the Cities. When I was a kid, a large group of Amish craftsmen helped to restore a huge, dilapidated barn that belonged to Luther College. For most of the Spring and Summer of 1992 there were Amish dudes all over the town! The main place they would congregate on hot afternoon breaks was the Whippy Dip, our local ice cream "hotspot". My friends and I hung out there almost every day, and we loved getting to know them and hearing about how their traditional ways of barn raising were being used to bring the 150 year old building back to life. It was a cool experience for my young self, and really broadened my world view.

My babysitter growing up was Amish. Never understood why we paid them considering we worked our asses off their, we were basically paying to be farm hands😂(grew up in Indiana) those dudes could party like you would not believe tho, Saturday’s they all partied with the lights out and the next morning it looked like a claymores full of red solo cups blew up all over the property. Rumspringa around us was a either 6 months or 1 year, but a very strict period of time, after which you were forced to make a decision to either live as an Amish and be embraced by your family, or you could live a life with technology in normal society without the restrictions of Amish culture, but you aren’t allowed to see your family anymore, and of the few instances I knew of that made the decision to leave, they really weren’t allowed back into the community. The families take it incredibly hard and see it as a huge disrespect and slight to god and they did not cave on that rule.

My ex father used to lease a 600 acre farm to hunt. Must of had 20 tree stands and he got some work done by some Amish guys and they were so cool. Really friendly and into so much shit. They’ll build you a barn or a patio and then be like we breed Dobermans to lol. So we went and hung out up at their property and checked it out. Over time we were seeing them all the time and I lived there so I was always around. We offered them a couple days at the farm to try and harvest deer. Turns out then didn’t use our stands and they went to that farm that he only leased and they just mowed trees down and pretty much acted like they owned the place. It turned into this huge thing with the owners and stuff it was crazy at the time but thinking back on it it’s fuckin hilarious. Cutting trees down for a clear shot on someone elses property when you were invited to hunt 😂😂 never saw them after that

There is a wide range of Mennonites. All the way from the almost Amish ones discussed here to friends I had growing up in northeast Ohio where the mom wore a racing jacket and jeans. Also, my most recent ex was from a “worldly” mennonite family in Lancaster near where Shane is from. They left to go to a different more regular church when she was young. Good people, very simple in their thought processes though even when smart and living out in the world doing regular jobs. My ex was 30 and had doctorate in physical therapy…but i discovered she doubted the existence of dinosaurs because she just didn’t “get the point of dinosaurs”. I literally had to convince her they were real. It was hilarious but she just had never actually thought about it but had this general intuition they were fake. Best example I can give of how they’re just a little…different. I actually miss her and her family a lot. She was not typical of them and wasn’t ready to get married.

I remember in my twenties I brought my girl out to Lancaster. She was quite busty and had dressed in a super low cut shirt. Anyway we decided to stop at an Amish owned roadside stand. There was only a young man there running it. The look on his face was priceless as she leaned over all the vegetables to inspect them as he was opposite of her behind the stand. It took me a moment to notice it.. but it is absolutely still hilarious in my mind. He had the most authentic look of wonder and amazement in his eyes that I ever saw. When we got back in the car and I told her what I saw she turned beat red. She was looking at his melons and he was looking at hers 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I spent a couple months in an Amish area in a small town of Wisconsin wheee my ex girlfriend grew up. Amish people are a great example of a culture that resisted technology despite its convenience. I think that’s fascinating and definitely something our society lacks completely. We are absolutely at the mercy of technology and all we care about is convenience and entertainment without values.
