This wasn't supposed to be in the film. They just filmed Ben Affleck arriving for his audition and kept it in the movie.

Ha! In reality, Affleck was offered the role of Shakespeare and asked for Alleyn instead.

I love how Ben Affleck's character just waltzes in, he does NOT do an audition....and he just automatically assumes he gets a role. lol

LOL, and his condescending acknowledgment of his performance in one of Shakespeare's plays is a nice touch.

Tom Wilkinson is such a giant: a huge terrifying villain who can be as light as a feather and so funny. I never miss a chance to watch him do anything.

Affleck haters can hate, but he killed it in this movie

Who hates Ben Affleck? I've never seen him put a foot wrong and in this he is most perfectly and attractively arrogant--dominates the stage.

God, I love this movie. "I am, I am the money...."

I love his list of plays. Hieronimo is from Thomas Kyd's "The Spanish Tragedy," which some say Shakespeare contributed some lines to and which is seen as a precusor to Shakespeare's Hamlet. Then he lists three characters from Marlowe's plays. (People seeing Marlow as better than Shakespeare is a running gag in the movie, as is clear from the end of this clip.) And then, almost as an afterthought, he mentions a character of Shakespeare's, Henry...the Sixth. The last pause is also a gag, because eventually (although not at this point in time, when he'd only written the three parts of Henry VI) Shakespeare would go on to write Henry IV (in two parts), Henry V, and Henry VIII, and feature Henry VII in another play, so it's like Alleyn can barely remember which one he was. Ned Alleyn, by the way, like a lot of people in the movie, was a real person, one of the most prominent actors of the time, who seems to have remained good friends with Shakespeare for the rest of their lives, and who founded a group of schools which function until this day.

Yes! Great comment. Also, many people believe that Marlowe was really the author of Shakespeare’s plays, and a nod to this theory is shown in the scene where Will meets Marlowe in a tavern.

I really loved the Hugh Fennyman character. He ends up on stage towards the end, totally caught up in the magic of the theater, and dreading his character's actions because they spell the doom of the young star crossed lovers.

Watch how his character morphs from someone talk down to the actors to becoming intimidated by Affleck’s character. His facial expressions alone are priceless.
