There's something divine about the way Ud SPK sahib expounds a raag. He should be required listening for students on how to develop a raag. The way he plays the essential phrases with minimalist yet inspired ornamentation, and the pure beauty of his melodies are illustrative of a divine mastery of his instrument and an object lesson in humility. He shows that while he is certainly capable of flashy and complicated playing, he often chooses a simpler, direct approach, resulting in music pleasant to the ear for those learned in the field of ICM but also instructive to Western beginners like me. 🙏 He's also a master at playing the audience, no doubt about it.

Simply divine is all I can say being only a KG student in music. I love Bageshri and Bimpalasi among the many soulful ragas. I can imagine how much maestro's must be enjoying.Look at Ashwini, Kaushiki and MS Gopalakrishnanin Bageshri, Bimpalasi and Puria. How learned these great artists are. What amount of practice must they have undergone. Thank you ALLMIGHTY GOD for giving us the faculty and sense of hearing .-Dr.PV.Jois

P V Jois The older I get the more I am awed by the disciple, the dedication of mind, body and soul of great masters to their art. Humbling would be but a starter. Tears of joy come far closer to an expression of my gratitude for the courage taken and expressed by their life’s journey. I should like to add that their journey would be inconceivable w/o the guidance and love of the masters with whom they studied and struggled to attain their evident mastery. My hope, even in these times, is that the great traditions of India continue to bloom and grow. That each generation find beauty and strength in perpetuation of the ancient arts of India. Palms together. 🙏🙏🙏

That's one beautiful rendition of Bhimpalasi! On KZread you will also find Ustad Sultan Khan's rendition of bhimpalasi on Sarangi - that's divine too! Bhimpalasi and Yaman are too extraordinarily sweet ragas. The sweetness just oozes out of them! Editing the comment to add, that the tabla accompaniment was awesome too!

Ustadji plays divine music. It is obvious he feels the music in every bit of his being- otherwise, such a soulful rendition is not possible. With the departure of the Sitar trinity (Pt RS, Ust VK, Pt NB), the mantel for carrying on the best traditions of sitar has squarely fallen on Ustadji. Wishing him the very best. Many thanks for uploading this gem.

Ustad Shahid Parvez is, of course, very good. Let us also remember / keep in mind Late Ustad A H J Khan, Late Ustad Rais Khan & our contemporary, the exceptionally talented Pandit Niladri Kumar. Do listen to Pt Nayan Ghosh also, dear rasika-friends. That takes the list to 8. If we have to go up to 10 (दश रत्न = ten jewels), which 2 names would you add? Budhaditya Mukherjee ? Who else...

Went 3 times in India : 1998, 2000 and 2010. For a total stay of 6 months... In 2000, I bought some cassettes of Indian Classical Music and one was from Shahid Parvez. I remember having listened it at night on my walkman at least once per day...I still like this artist, probably less well known as Ravi Shankar but not less talented.

Sorry but you’re quite ignorant. Shahid Parvez is very well known and he plays much better than Ravi Shankar. If you know anything about sitar you will understand how superior he is. Ravi Shankar started learning at the age of 18. Shahid Parvez comes from a sitar family and started at 3. Thai itself should tell you something. Just because everyone knows Shankar because he was friends with the Beatles doesn’t mean he is that good.

@@pallaveevea763 You call OP ignorant but you clearly have comprehension issues. He is right in saying Ravi Shankar is more well known outside of India, this is a fact! RS was highly influential in introducing Indian classical music to the west, mainly through his association with George Harrison and the Beatles. No where did OP even mention that RS is better than SP, it is you who is obsessed with who is better, which is very typical of you so called "Sitar Expert". People like you are the ones who give music fans a bad name.

In the Imdadkhani style of playing, there is generally no tamboura. And the initial part without the tabla is called 'aalaap' and 2nd part is called 'Jod'. And it does not have tabla in it. That's just the structure :). And I think raag is more proper.

+William Bugg any indian classical raag is a combination of some fixed notes. However, the each note has some demand and that changes from raag to raag. while presenting a particular raag, the artist needs to fulfill the demand of each note and in doing so there is no fixed route. Within a fixed domain there is full freedom. This does not make sense ! right. But this is the indian classical music. To answer your question, the whole presentation is raag bhimpalasi. To summarize, first the establishment of each note which called alaap (discussion), then jor, jhala (using the different strings with some rhythm), vilambit (using slow tempo), drut (fast tempo)...
