    This is so disappointing to watch.. as a Deaf person who has a huge passion for music and supports her ASL Professional Deaf Performers, he ain’t it. He’s wrong for saying things like that because the professionals have been doing this for so long and the last year performance with JTAY, you can’t even top that. There are literally better performers that can do it better than he did. He robbed them for his own 15 minutes of fame. That boy just go focus on being just a TikTok influencer, this ain’t the field for you.

    @CBS I really suggest that you look into why the deaf community woke up today angry and heartbroken at Shaheem’s lack of ASL performance that denied us accessibility to the music. He did NOT shine. To non-signgers, they may think Shaheem did amazing; but to ASL signers, he did not. Also to even mention the past performers like he did is uncalled for.

    Sorry to say I haven't watched the performance yet I was just happy he was getting some mainstream attention because he's been on KZread for so long. I sign a little bit and am still learning and I do understand the frustration it brings to the deaf community when people don't think about them or think about them last. How can you be mad at one person though it's not like he exclusively was at fault for the mishaps and mistakes that media lacked to provide for the deaf community. He does sign and understand ASL but could you put yourself in his shoes when performing at a Super Bowl where I'm sure everything was chaotic and done extremely fast. You should be mad at the media and the people who broadcasted. Were there closed captions available? I just don't understand why you are so angry at only him?? Can you explain further?

  • @jaidewinant

    @jaidewinant

    @@CJxLuvlyAlso, closed captions are not equal access. ASL is not English performed with hands. The grammar, syntax, rules, etc are completely different. Facial expression and classifiers aren’t even a part of English language grammar. A lot of Deaf people cannot understand English well, things don’t always translate (metaphors and idioms) and ASL is an explicit language moreso than English. So captions are not the same level of access which is why this is very important. It’s like telling someone who speaks Spanish to use English captions even though they understand only a percentage of the English language.

    @@jaidewinant I completely understand that's exactly the first thing my ASL teacher taught us. But I really don't think that it's Shaheem's fault. There was so many things at play here and we don't know the full circumstances of what was happening on stage and there's obviously a delay when interpreting something live especially if the artist decides to improvise or if he was reading from a teleprompter which also has its own delays too. I think it's a systemic issue that hearing people don't fully understand how to provide accurate communication access for the deaf/HOH/deaf blind communities.

    CBS should be ashamed of themselves for introducing deaf performers and then not giving them ONE second of air time! Why?! They did just as good, if not better than the hearing performers. Why can’t you at least give them a corner of the screen or you could show the hearing and death performer together like Garth Brooks did in 1993. I wish more people had balls like him because he refused to sing the anthem without Marlee Matlin by his side. It’s 2024, EVERYONE has the human right to basic communication. it takes nothing from anyone to share the screen. What kind of message are you sending people like my deaf three year-old daughter when you hide them from the world and make them view a separate app that sucks?? You should be ashamed of yourselves. Just a minute .. from being deaf at one time as a child and now a hearing person after many operations. This is not the fault of Shaheem .. A man who is DEAF is asked to translate a music venue which takes being able to HEAR in some form either fully hearing or hard of hearing. To be an interpreter and translate the music to the deaf and hard of hearing people you have to be able to HEAR something. This was the fault of Super Bowl management. People and the Super Bowl expected him to interpret, which he literally physically cannot do. He cannot hear he dances from vibrations and the base sound. Super Bowl should have had a ASL interpreter that could match the task and interpret for the deaf and hard of hearing Community to be able to enjoy the half time show. If they wanted to show case how those who are deaf can be musically inclined and dance, and perform that should have been a separate show or on a different screen separate from the ASL interpreter that was able to sign the show as it went along. The deaf and hard of hearing community was left out of the Super Bowl half time show because they didn’t have an interpreter. That’s on the super bowl major and it hurt specially hard after last years ASL interpreter Justina rocked it out of the ball park where both the hearing community and deaf communities could really understand and enjoy it 😢

    I see why the deaf community is mad but I don't think this was solely his fault. Yes there's been a fantastic line of deaf interpreters who have signed and still sign for huge performances like this. I believe he is first and foremost a dancer and I could only imagine how dancing and signing at the same time especially for upbeat songs could be chaotic and sometimes hard to understand. In all fairness I think they should have had a separate interpreter who wasn't on stage signing in plain sight on screen at all times. Yes, what he said may have been a little cocky but I really think he was trying to say that THE WAY he interprets is or maybe a bit different from what other interpreters do because he has his own style of doing it. Also this was one of his first major dance plus interpreting performances so he clearly was going to be excited and could have been nervous in the moment and could also have been trying to keep up with everything. We don't know how well he could see the teleprompter and much more than that. I'm just saying let's not solely blame Shaheem and let's blame the media for this mess up because I'm sure there were many factors at play here. There was also plenty of moments you couldn't see him or his co-performer on camera at all. So you just can't say it was ALL his fault. I'm sure many people of the deaf community wouldn't be able to get up there and do the same or even a fraction of signing correctly and in time and while dancing. Yes they were hired to provide communication to the deaf communities and hired to also perform. The people in the hearing community often forget that ASL/sign language requires full attention and constant camera view directly on the person who is signing to communicate properly. Also, people mess up y'all he's not perfect and even said he's NOT the best so give him some benefit of the doubt here. He also uses a ton of slang when signing and many may not comprehend what many slang signs register as. This is a systemic problem in my opinion and shouldn't be blamed on just one individual. He didn't rob anyone of proper communication, CBS and whoever else did. Blame them not only Shaheem.

    Absolute cringe performance! Couldn’t even understand half of what he was signing! Was putting on a show for himself not the deaf community! They should have brought the amazing women from last year! Watching them try hard 😂😂😂😂 the is was embarrassing so cringe! Absolutely not!

    The fact that you would call the deaf community ungrateful for being upset about a lack of accessibility for an event as big and with as many resources as the SUPERBOWL just shows your lack of knowledge and empathy

    Because he didn't do his job. Last year Justina interpreted AND performed. Shaheem mostly just danced and didn't provide accessibility to the Deaf/HoH community at all. And yet he's bragging about how good he did and how he's something new.

    Shaheem was the worst performance I ever had seen in my lifetime. But again, what did I expect?
