Deaf in America | Nightly Films

Millions of Americans are Deaf or hard of hearing, and many rely on American Sign Language or ASL to communicate. Nightly Films follows students and teachers at Connecticut's American School for the Deaf, where ASL was born, as well as a midtown Manhattan school that's teaching ASL to hearing students -- to learn its vibrant history and rich culture, bridge the gap to create a more inclusive world -- and reveal what it's really like being Deaf in America.

It's honestly disgraceful that the station couldn't be bothered to put accurate captions on this video.

There is a huge irony in not having captions on this video, given the fact this is specifically a film about being Deaf/HoH and even within it you show that there are people who did not have ASL until much later in their lives -- meaning you are already aware that this is inaccessible to anyone who cannot hear the spoken words and who cannot read the sign language of the people featured. Please fix that. Autogenerated captions are insufficient.

I do agree, but at least there's auto-generated captions, but they should have thought ahead about this!

I still can’t believe that ASL is not taught in mainstream schools as a language option.

I took 2 semesters of ASL and was lucky enough to have a Deaf roommate. Since then I haven’t been able to practice and need a refresher, and maybe get involved with the Deaf community here.

Watch qualified teachers and look into Deaf Moth (Deaf news in ASL).. look for brief stories in ASL to brush up.

Put accurate, human-written captions on this video, please. It's literally a documentary about being Deaf.

Why is a news organization like NBC News relying on auto captions for this video? It should be open captioned, first, but if not that, at least add ACCURATE captions.

Hello, no it's not offensive. I know hearing students who attend Gallaudet University. They get their degree and they learn to sign. They have no choice but to learn to sign because they are fully immersed

No, it isn't if you're very motivated in learning ASL and are truly willing to spend at least a majority of your life working with the deaf. Many hearing people had gone to Gallaudet University and received degrees in interpretation on the undergraduate/graduate certificate program level, and social work, psychology, and deaf education on the graduate level.

@@rp6635 Learning ASL would be like taking Spanish or French - or any other foreign language. A few things do set ASL apart from these other foreign languages. If you're interested in taking a beginning ASL course, you could enroll at a nearby college that offers ASL or take an online ASL class. I have a friend who teaches ASL online - her online classes meet on Zoom. Or just download an ASL app as an app will have videos that shows you how to sign words. And....seek out deaf people in your community. It's best to immerse yourself in their language if you do that. Check for deaf social events in your community and go there.
